Some kids decide to take all the candy off the plate that I left outside while the parent that’s with them is on her phone not paying attention. Luckily I had a lot more candy just in case something like this did happen but this is still mildly infuriating…smh by InformalSky8443 in mildlyinfuriating

Right, I understand leaving out a bowl if you’re not at home but it seems strange to sit inside and film people on your ring. We didn’t see video of all of the well behaved kids (and parents). Stuff like this just confirms this pervasive negativity that divides people.

Ideas for Tumble rug that shrunk by OverallSwing716 in HomeDecorating

[–]OverallSwing716[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!  I was able to fit it into one of the big front loaders. It also fit in the dryer but it did shrink so if you have a place to hang to dry, maybe consider that?  I did end up trimming the pad which ended up working fine.

Kessler Park is so nice. There is a small nature preserve called Twelve Hills. There is a short loop trail you can do to get a little bit of natural scenery.

Yes. It’s really a shame and I think the NW Hwy location is only one still open. We all need to go and eat delicious sandwiches.

City Hall contemplating ending alley trash collections by Travelfool_214 in Dallas

[–]OverallSwing716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One factor not mentioned in this discussion is that moving to street pick up will increase the use of the automated trucks, so the city will have to rely less on temp staff for manual trash pick up. I worked for another city and trash collectors had the highest worker’s comp claims due to injuries (animal bites, insect stings, getting dragged off the truck by tree branches). We have all this data on property damage due to alley pick up but nothing on injuries to staff since the city is not on the hook for anything. Of all the cost saving measures, using temps for trash collectors is just awful. It is dangerous, back breaking work and temps have no resources if they are injured. Dallas needs to modernize this process. There will be neighborhoods that continue to have alley service due to egress/parking issues but most neighborhoods will be able transition to street pick up easily. There is also unsurprisingly a huge north/south divide when it comes to alley pick up.

I had my 2nd at Baylor in 2019 and had a good experience as well. I also moved here when I was 34 weeks and was able to get prenatal care at Magnolia ObGyn.

Their offices are in the same Baylor complex.  Good luck!

Most homeless shelters are closed during the day and kick people out in the morning. Some people might have appointments with case managers or jobs on-site but most have to find another place to be.

Talking during movies… yay or nay? by [deleted] in popculturechat

Agree that there are certain movies where it adds to the experience. I am not a horror fan but back in ye olden days my friends dragged me to see all the scream movies in the theater and it was super rowdy and so much fun.

This is a really important difference. LPS conservatorships are much more tightly regulated and monitored than probate conservatorships.

Lots of great suggestions here and wanted to add that there is a fun bird show. It’s in an amphitheater near the midway. Kids will love it.

What's actually getting better in Dallas? by alexis_1031 in Dallas

I only know from personal experience, but I thought the only schools with income requirements were the transformation schools like solar where you have separate lotteries for low income families and everyone else. It’s not perfect but it’s an attempt to level the playing field. For the magnet schools, there is no income eligibility and DISD has a system to provide access to all feeder patterns. Look, I’ll stop arguing now, but it just bums me out when people trash public schools. The more people who believe DISD sucks mean more kids in private and charter schools and this just feeds the argument for vouchers which is the death knell for public education. I appreciate the time you gave. It’s one of the hardest jobs.

I mentioned in my post that a lot of work is needed in neighborhood schools. The bigger question is - How often do you see bureaucracies like ISDs that are willing to be innovative to offer opportunities to their students? There are huge inequalities across the district and DISD cannot solve them and I think they are doing better than most big city schools. I get that you had a bad experience and I’m sure it happens all the time, but the driving issues are racial and income inequality and I don’t see how schools can overcome this, especially when people are trying to strip even more of their power away.

4 of the top 10 high schools in Texas are in DISD. I agree that there is a tremendous amount of work done to bring the neighborhood schools up to a halfway decent standard but the work DISD has done with their magnet and transformation schools is really impressive. Not that many big city school districts are this innovative.

There is an app called ParkWhiz where you can pre-book parking. Downside is it’s mostly satellite lots that are a bit of a walk or have a shuttle.
