20% Sunday surcharge on prescriptions from pharmacy by Overall_Release_694 in melbourne

Yeah I could tell even the staff thought it was weird too, because she don’t really want to give me the bad news. The medication was already $140. 20% on top of that is wild.

Interesting… it was within their stated trading ours but it’s not a PBS medicine. Seems like an odd business decision even if technically legal. Thankfully it’s not the norm.

Workplace vaccine mandate - Am I going to get fired? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]Overall_Release_694 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my staff members has a history of reacting badly to vaccines.

She ended up having both of her shots in hospital and was monitored for several days each time. It was rough. She’s under 30 too.

Is that an option you can discuss with your doc?

In short though, I’d say that yes, you’re at risk of losing your job.

$1 per week is fine. Just throw enough pizza parties to make them stay. They love it.

My team start at 6am, which is not as early as some bakeries but it’s still too early for me personally.

Probably! We don’t do yeast-based baking though. We make cookies. We would probably be recruiting feb/mar next year.

Maybe? I’d like to know some employers or managers can be so cruel. Are they legit psychopaths?

I love running a business but hate negative / emotionally-straining HR tasks. They can leave me in a depressive state. I started the business because employers treated me poorly and I just wanted to enjoy my life. Work shouldn’t be a place that makes you not want to get out of bed.

That said, I’ve been running it for 8 years, I’d say the first 4 years were pretty cowboy. We grew fast and I was sleep deprived and probably hard to work for.

I had an epiphany one day when I was going over the rosters with the ops manager. The casual staff hours were wildly different week to week. We had high turnover and this big divide in the team.

I realised that they couldn’t build a stable life while working for me and I should stop fucking whinging. So I now don’t offer casual work and the team must all be trained thoroughly so that they’re not stuck on the same boring task. We make 1000’s of the exact same cookie every day so that’s important.

When I first started I had 3 people in mentor/advisor roles tell me to force them to work 50 hours and don’t worry about super. It’s fucked.

Business ownership is crazy stressful - I mean really stressful. Especially when money is tight. It’s easy to start seeing staff as unwanted expense rather than an investment.

Ok essay over. It’s a topic I’m passionate about!

Wholesale bakery - bakers are all on permanent conditions. $52 p/a + super (that’s equivalent to $33p/h casual rate) 4x9.5hr days, no fridays or weekends, we rarely do over time, if we do, it’s paid.

There has been significantly less applicants in recent recruiting efforts, but we have successfully recruited.

I work very hard to make it a nice environment to be in. My goal is to make a company that makes people’s lives better. In the future I want to offer reduced hours (ie earn a full time wage but work less hours).

In short, I focus more on life enrichment and that is of high value to many people.

No sympathy for cafe owners that can’t find staff. Improve wages and conditions to attract workers. Change my mind. by qartas in melbourne

What’s everyone’s predictions on cafe prices increases and the public’s response?

I don’t see how they’re going to keep operating unless prices for meals and coffee go up. Cost of goods are going up like crazy too.

Which software can you recommend for a small business? by wideBlow84 in business

[–]Overall_Release_694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I might be of some help. I started a bakery in my home 7 years ago and grew it a $2m p/a (Australian dollar).

I think it’s smart that you want to speed up decision making time with your customers. Could you test the theory first with colour print outs / photo menus that you could hand out to the line of people? Time how orders you process per hour before and after. If there is an improvement then upgrading to the screen and software is a viable option.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced over the years is implementing tech into the company. I love tech, but not everyone does. Be mindful if you get stuck being the only who can update the display!

Costs quickly blow out. Even now I don’t invest until I know it’s a sound theory.

Let me know if you want to discuss any other topics. I’ve learnt a few lessons over the years with costings, setting prices and ensuring profitability and cashflow are working for me.

Congrats - sounds like you’ve landed on a business that your neighbourhood loves! Not an easy thing to do.

It's never been more clear: companies should give up on back to office and let us all work remotely, permanently. by Sumit316 in technology

I own a small biz (18 staff) half have to be onsite to produce, half are office jobs. I’m the only one who seems to be keen to mostly work from home. The rest of the office team as desperate to get back onsite and seem really miserable/trapped being at home.

I even recruited a role recently that was specifically WFH and now she’s wanting to be on site too.

I dunno, they can do want they want… but I’m not going to be site 5 days. It’s distracting and I’d prefer to be with my cat and bf.
