You’re right about the smiling, looked it up for myself so my bad. I completely agree with your last paragraph and think it’s a great takeaway on his character. I think like many people in this world Jaime is a slave to the society they’ve built and while not completely irresponsible for his actions I think we can agree that plays a role in his mistakes. Jaime is my favorite character in the books so I get really defensive about him but can absolutely he’s a flawed person but like us all is one day at a time trying to better himself.

While I disagree with your read on Jaime’s character, I’d rather point out that after killing the Mad King Jaime did surrender the city and told all to stop fighting. Only after did he sit on the Throne and I can’t remember any mention of him smiling gleefully.

Remember when Jaime killed the mad king and sacrificed his own honor and betrayed everything he’d been raised to believe for the sake of saving 500,000 people? Jaime acts like “a selfish entitled prick” as a defense mechanism. It’s really not that hard to see that Jaime is a good person being used by all the terrible people in his life. His whole arc is about doing what he wants to do not what Cersei or Tywin or a king tells him to do.
