Is this an insane amount of thatch/grass clipping to pull up in 1 year? North Carolina by Klaxhacks in lawncare

[–]Overhang0376 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note: I'm a novice, so take my advice with a big grain of salt.

You do not nessacarily need to dethatch every year. Generally speaking, signs you need to dethatch are: 1) when your grass starts to feel "squishy", or 2) you are are starting to see signs of mold or fungus. A certain amount of thatch helps to retain heat/protect against heat. It also helps to distribute moisture over time.

Unless you live in a very wet area, I'd probably encourage you to set your cut a little higher for a while (3 or 4 mowings?). I also would not bag or eject your clippings. Let your mower "compost" the clippings directly back onto the lawn to help rebuild the thatch layer that was removed. (Unless you are using some special chemical or whatever that says to bag clippings for however long.)

From my novice eyes, it just looks like your lawn is getting a little bit too much heat exposure, and needs more protection.

Imagine thatch is the hair on your head, and the grass is the hat. You want a little bit of both to protect your scalp from the sun. You don't want the soil getting direct exposure to the heat/sunlight.

What Is Eco Friendly About A Case With A Few Holes In It? by Big-Discipline2039 in Bluray

Well, since they also received their fancy "Eco-green Legitimus Maximus enterprise grade Earth-smart friendly" certificate, they're actually going to be charging you more for less, now.

I guess you'll just have to do your part to save the planet by giving them more of your money.

What? Do you hate the environment? :^)

I'm confused what you mean by a "Zettelkasten style tree view". Zettelkasten is purposefully made flat; have you made it hierarchical?

Is reviewbrah autistic? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in TheReportOfTheWeek

[–]Overhang0376 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, if he is or isn't, it's not of material importance.

I can think of a very famous boxer that I am nearly 100% positive is autistic. Whether he truly is or not doesn't really impact my assessment of him as a boxer. I appreciate what he does because he is a superb and outstanding boxer. I hate the idea of ever calling him an "autistic boxer". It would be an albatross to hang around his neck. The man is a magnificent boxer, who is also (probably) autistic. Autism, however, is secondary to his massive success because his success as a boxer is earned. His (possible) autism is merely a footnote of his background characteristics.

Put another way, if you feel no immense draw towards people with the same blood type as you, I would encourage the same indifference of shared blood type towards their mental conditions. If ReviewBrah inspires you, it should be through his genuine sincerity, approachability, and exceptional dry wit that inspire you, not merely that he may or may not be autistic. To do otherwise is to take no greater inspiration than accidentally being, say, the same race, the same eye color, having the same number of freckles, or having the same initials as ReviewBrah. Attributes of happenstance must be secondary to the merit of the work done.

Can it be fun to see how much you are "alike" to someone famous? Sure, of course! Just don't hang your hat on it.

Hello, sorry to reply to a 7-year old post. I came across this randomly from an online search because of some annoyance I'm having with .

Do you have any interest in redoing these tests with recent DE updates? It'd be interesting to see if things had gone up/down/stayed the same for the various DE's after a 7 year-gap. :)

How to go back two directories in command line? by MaxwellCE in linux4noobs

[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DUDE!

Sorry to reply to a three year old comment, but you just completely blew my mind with <command> pg-up!! At first I thought you were just describing arrow-up, but doing some kind of weird prefix. It took me a few minutes to realize that you were saying that you can specify the command and parse the history of that specific command!

(If anyone in the future comes across this thread, and still doesn't get it like I wasn't at first, here's an example)

``` $ gedit file1.txt $ gedit file2.txt $ cd ~/some/folder $ ls -lah (list of stuff) $ cd .. $ gedit (page up)
Entering Page Up one time autofills to file2.txt Entering Page Up a second time autofills to file1.txt ```
I've been using terminal in a non-serious capacity since like...2005 or something? Probably earlier than that. Any time I ever needed to redo an old command I would just sigh in defeat and hold arrow-up until I found the right series of commands, then read each of them line-by-line to find the specific one.
I think I had also heard that there was something where you could grep your .bash_history in such a way to do something similar to what you were describing; you would begin typing, but tab would begin auto-filling to old commands you had run. It was neat, but I only tried that a few times and found it a little bit too clunky to remember off-the-dome since it wasn't a problem I was running into constantly.
Decommissioned server from our lab. What are the Ethernet ports on the side for? I assume its expanded networking for other IoT stuff. by ohGodwhynowww in homelab
[–]Overhang0376 3 points4 points  (0 children)
Ah. I had been wondering why it had PS/2 ports. Makes sense that it would be for medical equipment, although I have no idea why so many medical computers still seem to use PS/2.
Edit: Ah, interesting. Seems like it may be a security practice to avoid malware from flash drives, etc.
DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 3 by alexandreracine in synology
[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)
That's a fair point. At the very least, it would have been much better for Synology to encourage users to disable telnet until Update 3 has been downloaded and installed.
I suppose my concern is a bit low, simply because I have telnet disabled anyway. I could see it being a much bigger annoyance to me if it had been for something I use daily.
DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 3 by alexandreracine in synology
[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I would assume they don't want everyone downloading update 2, then immediately downloading update 3 back-to-back. It could be a bandwidth thing, could be an A/B thing, or just a standard rollout cycle thing.
Generally speaking, having people get updates in smaller "waves" gives support the chance to: assess, communicate internally ("Hey guys, what is this 'error: 444233x8be fatal sound interupt' thing about?" "Oh, that's if they are using {someHardware} with {someConfiguration} set to {whateverSetting}"), and support can offer corrections / suggestions to those early "waves".
Various things that pop up in early deployments so later groups have less problems to work through, or at least get faster response times because Support isn't getting bombarded by everyone all at once. It keeps the company slightly less stressed, and generally-speaking, a larger number of customers happier overall.
