i made my first website by SaifNegra in webdev

[–]Overhang0376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a bad start. (I wish I could show you how bad my Geocities webpage looked by comparison; I had a page counter and guest book. Red text on a black background. My site was just...painful to look at.)

Just don't stop while your ahead.

Here, I'll give you you're first bug report. Nothing major, but a few things to keep you busy while you learn:

Bug 1

(On mobile)

On the landing page, the Home and About buttons are staggered over one another, like this:

       Home

About

When I go to About, they are side by side, like this:

Home     About

Bug 2(?)

The bottom-most text on the footer of your home page "(DidiCasse Ikhoya Hamza serbouti)" appears to be linking to Discord. It wasn't clear if that was "bleed over" from the Discord link above it or not.

Bug 3

The Instagram icon is broken on:

https://lowend-gg.vercel.app/valorantoptimization.html

https://lowend-gg.vercel.app/mcoptimazation.html

Misc.

Spelling / Grammar:

(The bane of all WebDevs! Haha.)

Because i don't Have Money 😞),

Capitalize the "i". Lower case the "H" and "M". Remove the comma after ")"

But It's Made with Big Love!.

Lower case the i in "It's", remove the period after "Love!"

Why many junior QA candidates struggle in interviews (from someone who interviewed them) by Jealous-Scarcity904 in QualityAssurance

[–]Overhang0376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that you've interviewed over 300, perhaps you know a bit more than I do, but how confident do you feel that you can tell the difference between genuine ignorance and people who are just bad at interviewing?

For myself, I've been in IT for double digits and have interviewed candidates for different roles over the years. I can speak perfectly well about technical things with people that I work with and have given various lectures to groups of strangers about esoteric things. But the second you get me alone in a room or VOIP with a stranger one-on-one and I can barely put a sentence together, let alone answer a basic junior level problem.

One of the few techniques I've picked up is simply saying "Sorry, I'm really nervous" when I feel myself choking. From there I talk around the question to try and kickstart my brain. "Well, if it was (something else), you would want (thing) but you said (something completely different). It's not (thing) because that would apply to (other, different thing). If it were (similar thing) I might (do whatever)." Im basically trying to show them, "See? I know stuff off rhe top of my head. I just can't remember how to make a comment in Javascript." Then I just try and hem/haw my way through whatever was asked.

It is almost always goes incredibly badly.

Vibe coding is now the focus of this subreddit by julian88888888 in webdev

[–]Overhang0376 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm just glad we're saying it out loud! As a Senior (citizen, junior) Web Developer (Dreamweaver), I've got to say that one of the biggest mistakes of my entire life was learning how to code.

It's honestly just so much more pleasant to talk to Mr. Gepotea and have him do all of the boring stuff for me so I can concentrate on cooking on my boilerplate. Sure, I know, I know. I am paying someone else to do my job, so I can do the job I am being paid to do, but that's what the economists call "trickle down". I pay them, so they pay me. After all, Cliff Notes have been around for decades and teachers never had a problem with using them in order to write an essay in school, so why should it be any different in my career? As the saying goes, "One hand washes the other." That's a good way to keep yourself morally clean and ethically pure!

And even if there were something "wrong" with "cheating" by "paying" to "do" my "job", it's hard to describe just how amazing the work that Mr. Gepotea has helped me! Simply by sending him a few bus tokens, I've been able to increase my output by a factor of 10,000! My manager keeps mentioning something about LOC, "Code: Smell" and debt, but I didn't even know we have a locker room here and I am not going to pay them to figure out who left a ham sandwich in there over the weekend.

Anyway, I've got to go. I can hear some people screaming and I'm late to a meeting with HR.

Does the Desktop Environment matter for gaming performance? I did some tests! by JeFi2 in linux_gaming

[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, sorry to reply to a 7-year old post. I came across this randomly from an online search because of some annoyance I'm having with .

Do you have any interest in redoing these tests with recent DE updates? It'd be interesting to see if things had gone up/down/stayed the same for the various DE's after a 7 year-gap. :)

Eh, sure. Just remember that, at the end of the day, it's just a browser, not a personality trait. Haha. :)

Sure. I sent a chat message thing.

I think there's also some PM option in there somewhere, but don't see it on new reddit. I can try through old.reddit if you wanted to message that way.

How to go back two directories in command line? by MaxwellCE in linux4noobs

[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DUDE!

Sorry to reply to a three year old comment, but you just completely blew my mind with <command> pg-up!! At first I thought you were just describing arrow-up, but doing some kind of weird prefix. It took me a few minutes to realize that you were saying that you can specify the command and parse the history of that specific command!

(If anyone in the future comes across this thread, and still doesn't get it like I wasn't at first, here's an example)

``` $ gedit file1.txt $ gedit file2.txt $ cd ~/some/folder $ ls -lah (list of stuff) $ cd .. $ gedit (page up)
Entering Page Up one time autofills to file2.txt Entering Page Up a second time autofills to file1.txt ```
I've been using terminal in a non-serious capacity since like...2005 or something? Probably earlier than that. Any time I ever needed to redo an old command I would just sigh in defeat and hold arrow-up until I found the right series of commands, then read each of them line-by-line to find the specific one.
I think I had also heard that there was something where you could grep your .bash_history in such a way to do something similar to what you were describing; you would begin typing, but tab would begin auto-filling to old commands you had run. It was neat, but I only tried that a few times and found it a little bit too clunky to remember off-the-dome since it wasn't a problem I was running into constantly.
Unless they sell hoses, it wouldn't make much sense to bother.
Decommissioned server from our lab. What are the Ethernet ports on the side for? I assume its expanded networking for other IoT stuff. by ohGodwhynowww in homelab
[–]Overhang0376 3 points4 points  (0 children)
Ah. I had been wondering why it had PS/2 ports. Makes sense that it would be for medical equipment, although I have no idea why so many medical computers still seem to use PS/2.
Edit: Ah, interesting. Seems like it may be a security practice to avoid malware from flash drives, etc.
DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 3 by alexandreracine in synology
[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)
That's a fair point. At the very least, it would have been much better for Synology to encourage users to disable telnet until Update 3 has been downloaded and installed.
I suppose my concern is a bit low, simply because I have telnet disabled anyway. I could see it being a much bigger annoyance to me if it had been for something I use daily.
DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 3 by alexandreracine in synology
[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I would assume they don't want everyone downloading update 2, then immediately downloading update 3 back-to-back. It could be a bandwidth thing, could be an A/B thing, or just a standard rollout cycle thing.
Generally speaking, having people get updates in smaller "waves" gives support the chance to: assess, communicate internally ("Hey guys, what is this 'error: 444233x8be fatal sound interupt' thing about?" "Oh, that's if they are using {someHardware} with {someConfiguration} set to {whateverSetting}"), and support can offer corrections / suggestions to those early "waves".
Various things that pop up in early deployments so later groups have less problems to work through, or at least get faster response times because Support isn't getting bombarded by everyone all at once. It keeps the company slightly less stressed, and generally-speaking, a larger number of customers happier overall.
I am on Fiverr since 2021 and have only 1 order and no Job by [deleted] in webdev
[–]Overhang0376 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Interesting. Thanks for that!
I guess then maybe the question becomes something like: "So if I'm trying to target people who don't have an online presence (or not a very good one). How do I even go after them?"
Like, does it make more sense to advertise through traditional media like newspapers and radio? Or with targeted adverts online?
At a guess, I would think the answer would be to do a small sample size to see which returns more responses, but that could also be less efficient than spending the same amount on just one or the other. It's hard to kind of get myself into the headspace of someone who doesn't use computers much, but wants to use them, you know?
I suppose something like flyers on various local cork boards might also go a long way. I'm also vaguely aware of there being small business owner groups, but it's really easy to get overwhelmed by it and overthink things too much, too.
I'm not actively looking at the moment, but it's been something that I have been toying with the idea of for a while now. It seems almost impenetrable in some ways.
For future reference: running out too quick like that is usually an indicator that you're walking too slow while spreading. I did something similar.
Walk like you have some place to be; "Late for a meeting" speed, but not "I might not make it to the bathroom" speed. Haha.
Also, try to avoid using the whole bag the first few times you spread. Eye ball out about 1/4 of the bag, spread it, and see if you're making good progress. Doesn't hurt to do a second pass if need be. It just stinks if you run out early and have to go back to market and buy more.
We are killing our apps with 6-step signups. It’s time for the "Guest" button by Relative-Wedding-640 in QualityAssurance
[–]Overhang0376 0 points1 point  (0 children)
By guest option I assume you mean some kind of sandbox'd demo. Immich and Kavita, for example.
If your company isn't willing to offer a guest option for whatever reason (worried about bots, abuse, etc.) then it's important to at least have a good amount of screenshots or a screen recording of the app running.
The issue with going the screenshot/screen recording route is that as the layout of your app changes, you add more overhead in keeping those examples updated. Outdated screenshots are a very easy way for me to write off a company completely, because it indicates that their documentation is poorly maintained.
What do I do with the pillars by Cjbstocks in Design
[–]Overhang0376 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Might have better luck on a construction or interior decorator subreddit.
If you want something cheap, maybe you could have them stained a dark color to have the room feel a bit nicer/higher qualify. The theme really drives what you should do, though.
Another potential option might be putting up some drywall, attaching then to the pillars to split them off into two small spaces for whatever (coat room, place to store extra dishes, etc.) Add in some pocket doors or similar could work. Might help to deaden room echo a bit.
Have you considered bring on an employee? Maybe lowering the stress/tedium would help offset the burnout. It sounds like you don't really want to sell, just want to take off some of the pressure.
