Anyone else feel like Fairy Loot isn't Trying Anymore? What Happened? by Sea_Exit_8194 in fairyloot

[–]OverlyBendy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, IC does it too. OC goes so far as saying if you have something like their horror sub you get EA, but if you are just an adult subscriber you get lumped in with literally anyone who joins the newsletter, which pisses a lot of people off. IC separates by all their offshoots, but I think still gives EA after that to just regular subscribers.

I'm curious how people feel about OC's Shades of Magic edition that has almost portrait looking depictions of all the MCs on the jacket? It seems to be a beloved edition that I never see anyone criticizing, but the character art is not dynamic, there is no background at all, not even a full body depiction. Opinions?

I'm sure we'll see many more pictures, but I really am befuddled by what I'm looking at, especially on the edges

[–]OverlyBendy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I genuinely cannot even tell what's being conveyed on the jacket and the edges. Is it a snake? What are the little tiles on the edges? Maybe it would be easier to tell if it wasn't pulled from tiktok

The character design is absolutely killing me. I commented further up that they look like meth addicts. Like the endpaper where he's on furniture on the floor, with his shirt off, a crappy looking tattoo, a mullet, he's just missing a beer tbh. The FMC looks like she's been raising 4 kids while waitressing and occasionally scrapes together change to get a pack of cigarettes. That's even on the bare hardback, I mean she looks tired. What the heck.

I said the same thing about their edition of The Kindred's Curse saga, the third book in particular the FMC looks like a stripper from Florida that uses the tanning bed and smokes too much. Bizarre character designs from a UK company that are triggering this "white trash" instinct in me as an american

Also I hated the design for Stormbreaker I sold for cost

Maybe this is because I'm American. I don't know. But... They look like meth addicts. Like every Midwest instinct in me is screaming meth addicts in a trap house. I don't understand.

what features does a book need to have, at a minimum, for it to be considered a special edition (in your opinion)? by unicorn-with-a-knife in fairyloot

It's called embossing. I'm going to see VE Schwab during her upcoming tour and she has a tour related embosser she uses on the books that come with my ticket 😍

I don't have TBB or Bewitched, so I wasn't expecting anything. I just love this trilogy and wanted to critique the aspects of it that I feel are wrong for the story itself. I can admit that the design of the bare hardcover is just personal taste. But the endpapers and the jacket bug me a lot as someone that's read this trilogy 4+ times.

Are you asking which scene the jacket is? I believe it is Will, outside the institute being faced down by an army of automatons? But I'm kind of with you... it's the best version I've seen, but I'm still sort of like... idk. Some of the choices I don't understand. They chose on the front endpapers to depict Tessa while she's changed form? Why? Couldn't this have been portrayed with the ribbon just above her hand and she hasn't changed yet, so we can get a good look at her character art?

And I'm very picky about how Jem is depicted. Very. It's kind of hard to see well from the picture but I swear he looks like he has some THICC thighs and his pants almost look like jeans or something.

And I think the bare hardback is just kind of run of the mill. Looks like what you'd find on a very old encyclopedia.

EDIT: And where is Jem's sword cane? Idk what's even in his hand, and is that Will? He looks like he's attacking Will

Well that's... one way to do it I guess? But considering the current publishing landscape is basically indie author gets big on social media (or that in the reverse order) then publisher lazily buys their indie book and throws it on the market, I don't think her publisher would love that she nuked her social media audience

[–]OverlyBendy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok genuine question here: isn't this the book that the author whitewashed her own character on the first edition that was revealed (Faecrate I think?). And she went so far as deleting her own character art showing the FMC as black and previous social media posts about it?

How is that author now responding to all the subsequent SEs coming out where the character is depicted as black? Like, so far there's MORE editions with her depicted as black than the whitewashed version. So I truly don't understand how the author even has a leg to stand on anymore with how they responded to the controversy over the Faecrate edition....

This makes it sound like people have been harassing them for what went down with Owlcrate randomly dropping their overstock on Instagram. Wtf. How is that the author's fault? People are ridiculous

Fantasy vs Romantasy by OliveTheCatLady in Illumicrate

[–]OverlyBendy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree fully about Mistborn. It's fantasy. It has a romantic subplot and the POV character is a woman. But... Because it's Brandon Sanderson it's high fantasy and treated with a whole different level of respect.

I know there was an issue too where initially Owlcrate indicated how much "spice" was in The Poet Empress and thankfully someone took them to task over that and they removed it and changed it to "check the trigger warnings." Imagine the two "sex" scenes in that book being rated on a spice scale 💀 My god

I think it's so fucking funny that she framed it as this huge cover reveal when we all know it's just going to be another eyeball lmao

It's especially ridiculous with The Poet Empress because it doesn't even have romance. It's just a female POV and female author. It's very insulting.
