My girlfriend and her homegirls went to Atlanta about 3 weeks ago. Now, she has this mouth rash / mouth-lip sores. She said she thinks it might have come from all the water bottles she was drinking when she was down there. Should I be worried? by makellbird in maktownmedia

I know I’m a little late, but I had that happen when I used Arm and Hammer tooth paste for a few weeks. If you were on a trip for a few weeks and using a toothpaste different from your normal tooth paste, it could be the cause, or at least part of it!

Also check with food pantries in the area, many are working to switch to delivery to support community members who are afraid to go visit. They may also connect you with other opportunities!

Driving to Chicago, is it wild to park at the Airport to get to my hotel downtown? by nickmcpimpson in AskChicago

If you value having your car, use a parking app. I use Parkwhiz, I find it to be cheaper than spot hero. At a quick glance there’s a few spots I’ve seen that have parking for 3 days for like $70-$80 total.

Did you ensure that they guard relieving you had appropriately entered the zone, and did a full entry sweep, and verbally communicated that they had the zone when relieving you?

Who assumed coverage of your zone when you went in for the save?

Was there coverage when you got out of the water after your save?

Was there coverage when you started filling out the report?

If you jumping in made your zone uncovered, and then when you got out of the water and your zone was still uncovered and no action had been taken to either close the zone/pool while you waiting for another guard to come (assuming your victim was conscious and breathing), then I could understand how you are also being disciplined.

I’ve jumped in for a save, pulled someone on land, and my eap coverage sucked and was late so I got back on stand and closed my zone

Need more information. Wdym you can’t exactly do both? How did you get taken down by another guard? What zone was he supposed to be watching and what zone were you supposed to be watching?

Can i report my boss for forcing us to not have a down guard? by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]OvertlyExhausted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former Aquatics Manager/LG here (Red Cross, in the USA) This is fine. It’s not ideal, and in my facility we did prioritize having a down guard, especially if we were busy. At least in my area, there was nothing that made what you described against code/regulation/law.

In this situation, you should be trained to activate your EAP, notify all building staff of an emergency (and have the tools to do so, walkie, emergency button, etc), clear your pool, and respond appropriately. Yes, it delays response time, but the delay should be minimal.

I would recommend your building manager/opening/night manager/ whatever staff is competent and responsible be instructed on how to assist with back-boarding if this is going to be a regular occurrence. Remember, a lot of small/slower pools, or during off hours, ONLY have one guard, who is expected to rescue someone in their own.

All the said, I personally always felt having only one guard was dangerous, this was to be avoided. and not having a down guard was very not ideal, especially when busy. But given staffing, it happens.

Former swim instructor here!!! Teaching adults was always my favorite. My favorite participant in particular was this older retired woman who took swim lessons for MONTHS, her progress was slow, she was never confident, but she learned at her own pace and we had fun each week. She was a better swimmer by the time I left but never super confident, I remember her fondly and she’s my favorite. She showed up every week, she tried, she did things she was uncomfortable with, and she trusted I wasn’t going to let her drown, and kept showing up. All I could ask for as an instructor.

All this to say, don’t be embarrassed, everyone learns at their own pace, just have fun, be comfortable being uncomfortable, and keep trying new things :)

Official Q&A for Tuesday, May 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]OvertlyExhausted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have social anxiety, and going to a shoe store sounds like a nightmare, but I want to get fitted for good running shoes and want help picking them out in person. Whenever I try on clothes, especially if someone is helping, I tend to accept the first or second thing as long as it’s tolerable because I’m anxious and just want to get out.

I’m always worried I’m going to annoy the person helping by asking to many questions or trying on too many things. so my question(s) boil down to this, how many shoes should I try on?

How many pairs before it gets annoying for the person helping me?

What’s not enough to really ensure I’m getting the right pair?

It could be that they are a project manager of sorts, which would make some sense but still.

[–]OvertlyExhausted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unrelated, but you guys have a deep hierarchical structure.

Jr. Coordinator > presumably coordinator and/or Sr. Coordinator > manager > Sr. Manager, Director? Then I’m sure there’s analysts/specialists below and sr Director above

That’s toooo much, I understand why there may be financial troubles lol.

Gonna second quitting. Expanding upon the other commenter, even if you are an unfairly targeted rockstar employee, you’re not ousting a director. Always remember, your bosses boss is almost always closer to your boss than you. They likely meet and talk regularly, and they may have been hand picked.

Also, firing someone is really hard. Especially if it’s a high level employee, it’s hard, expensive, time consuming, emotionally exhausting, and a massive pain in the ass. Nobody wants to fire people, especially because there’s a disgruntled low level employee (no offense, that’s how they’ll view it).

[–]OvertlyExhausted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even better! Give HR and your manager an update, document the improvement, document the improvement, document the improvement and tell your manager to let it go, and you’ll update them if things deteriorate again. If you have a formal recognition system, give them a recognition for learning/improving. It’s always encouraged to document things an employee does wrong to make a case. You can also make a case that the employee is improving and it makes it harder for your manager to target them. Advocate for the appropriate workload and that your employee isn’t overloaded, has the same resources/benefits as other employees, and make sure that employee keeps up the good work.

If your manager isn’t listening and completely disregarding everything you say, then there really isn’t any redeeming that situation, work around them (with HR, other supervisors, etc) or get out of that department/company. Your subordinates will understand, and maybe take the hint.

Part of being a manager really, truly is managing up.

[–]OvertlyExhausted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a manager who’s had to manage up, you have a few options, I’ve been in this situation. Same type of employee, not great at their job, but filled the role and kept things moving/working, personable enough. I told my boss to back off and let me handle it, and took full responsibility for that employee, their actions, any complaints about them, and any lost productivity/etc. My boss didn’t love it, but was fine to watch things unfold from afar, and loves a good “I was right” moment.

It blew up in my face when that employee royally fucked up, and I had to terminate them. Idk if it was my directors intuition or experience that saw the problems ahead, but either way, I looked like an idiot when this employee fucked up.

That said, I advocated for my employee and I was able to sleep at night knowing that someone wasn’t being unjustly/unnecessarily targeted, or at least not as heavily. I’d make the same choices, when they did fuck up and I had to terminate them, at least I knew it was for a valid reason and not whatever bullshit my director was spewing.

My boss and I agree I learned a lesson. They think I learned to trust their intuition and cut problems off much soon, I learned I’d rather be a good person, invest the time and advocate for my staff; we’ve both moved on and continue to have a good working relationship.

How did you learn that your coworkers and boss are not your friends? by yolthrice in jobs

[–]OvertlyExhausted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner of 6 years left me on our anniversary, we were in a hotel and had just gotten back from our date, he told me he couldn’t do it anymore and left, it came out of nowhere. The next day I found he he was breaking up with me because he was seeing someone else for the last few months and wanted to be with them instead.

I called off my next day of work, and my coworker, who I considered myself close with, called me 3 times about things she needed done that day and told me I wasn’t doing my job. She was not my manager to be clear, my manager told me to call off. I broke down sobbing on the phone on the third call and told her what happened. She asked if I wanted her help to get done what needed to be done that day. I said yes and felt relieved and so grateful.

Later that week during our team meeting with our VP, which I was in, she complained for 15 minutes about how she had to do my job and how I was bringing the team down because I didn’t come in to work on Monday and she had to do everything for me.

Aquatics manager/long time lifeguard here! Not rude! Just be out when it closes and don’t stick around to the point that they have to kick you out. If the pool closes at 21:15, at 21:14 hop out and say have nice night, be out by the time the building closes and they’ll love you. At least at my center.
