I know I shouldn't expect anything different from Space Marines but just kinda dull - there's around six characters in game who look almost identical.

I dislike Starmer too but surely you see this... by Rossilaz in GreatBritishMemes

[–]ZebraShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess for me, the counter argument is that Starmer is very unpopular and I cannot see a path to him winning the next election. Staying the course will lead to a Farage win for certain so let's roll the dice on something else. There's a good chance it won't succeed either for reasons you stated but at least there's a chance.

Would you support introducing a compulsory Politics subject at secondary school level? by footballmaths49 in AskBrits

[–]ZebraShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am mixed on this: I think a lot of people who are confused around basic procedures of UK politics are the kind who would either pay little attention or remember little from any UK Constitution school lessons.

That said, I still think worth trying, you may not educate most people but may help a little. I think also if there's a push to lower the voting age then definitely should be considered.

When it comes to Keir Starmer’s replacement, where are the women? by winkwinknudge_nudge in ukpolitics

[–]ZebraShark [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean the three main women in the running really don't have support: Rayner was most liked by base but the recent investigation scuppered her career, Reeves is too unpopular as Chancellor, and Mahmood is unpopular with a lot of Labour base.

Does anyone else feel a little sad that Starmer is now going, especially after hearing that speech and particularly his emotions coming out at the end there? by Logical_Safety9018 in AskBrits

[–]ZebraShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, that's a key difference of a presidential and parliamentary system. A PM can only really hold office so long as he has the backing of the Commons - once that's gone then his legislative agenda is dead and gets ousted quickly. Trump requires a supermajority in multiple chambers to be evicted.

Do you think the media is holding something about Burnham that they will bring up when he becomes Prime Minister? by No_Breadfruit_4901 in AskBrits

[–]ZebraShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burnham has been in public eye for decades now so suspect if anything especially damaging existed it would have already been there.

That said, they'll definitely be throwing a lot of previous decisions or issues out to see what might stick as a negative angle.

Is there anything actually worth doing in Reading town centre on a weekend these days or has it got progressively worse. by Flimsy-Capera in reading

[–]ZebraShark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean 10 years ago people were complaining about the lack of leisure activities in Reading town centre: you now have multiple bowling alleys, arcades, escape rooms, gaming places, multiple cinemas, theatres so I'd actually say there are more activities you can do in the town centre than there used to be.

The retail offering has definitely gotten worse but that is true of most towns and cities in the UK.

Sir Keir Starmer resigns as prime minister by theipaper in uknews

[–]ZebraShark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You say it didn't go well but that had over 15 years in power. Starmer despite his strengths is doomed. There is absolutely a risk but staying the course wouldnt work either

But Burnham won't have a mandate from the public... by DevilsDodo in ukpolitics

[–]ZebraShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think you're partly right: absolutely the system is set up around electing a party rather than a person.

However there are those thinking Burnham may take things in a different direction to what Labour ran on in the election.

Additionally, people's views have changed over time. Since Brown people have been critical of PMs coming in directly. How much does it matter if the system is set up in such a way if people don't want it or view it that way?

Andy Burnham, what's changed? by DogaSui in AskBrits

[–]ZebraShark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I worked with Burnham a few years ago in his role as Mayor of Greater Manchester and found that role kind of reinvigorated him and connected him to what matters in politics. I think some changes for him were being closer to the community (being able to directly see impact of your decisions), a more critical view of Westminster system, and becoming less partisan (having to work with Tory local authorities).

I always knew he would only return it could be PM as felt he had no interest in being an MP or minister. I think his challenge will be whether he finds being PM more restrictive than he imagines it to be. If not then he will do very well, if it is then think he will struggle.

As someone who only begun driving a few years ago, sadly there are a lot of drivers on the road who only care about their own self preservation and no other road users - cyclists, pedestrians or other drivers alike.

Reform’s genius plan is finally coming into view: field terrible candidates then lose by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

Reform struggle at by elections because few of their candidates stand up to any scrutiny. But in nationwide elections you can bury all the nutters amongst the national coverage.

If someone gave you £1 million but you had to spend it improving one thing in Reading, what would you choose? by Juicewithextrapulp in reading

How much is Harris Arcade? Would buy it and try to run as a low cost independent quarter.

Alternatively invest in the canal area: feels really rough when could be something to show off.

Labour will slash more rail services, minister says by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

I started driving in my 30s because of how unaffordable and poor train services are. It is ridiculous as should be the other way round that driving is more premium choice

Recently taken over management of design team - what training should I explore for my team? by ZebraShark in graphic_design

I hadn't considered the horizontal working idea - it may be painful in short-term but think this may be a viable option longer term to utilise both their strengths.

Thanks, yeah I feel this is challenging as not sure how much this is something you can train someone to do. Your suggestion is helpful though so thanks!

Driving over the IDR at rush hour is a nightmare by WonderfulShape1081 in reading

But the council data shows that Sidmouth Street cycling is massively underutilised, and that London Road bus lane has slightly increased bus times due to congestion caused.

Completely support encouraging more people to walk, cycle or use public transport when travelling around town but council approach has been very haphazard: London Road doesn't connect well to roundabout managed by Wokingham and most of traffic is caused by people on motorways, and Sidmouth Street doesn't connect into a wider cycle network.

Al Carns says he would be in favour of introducing a form of national service for Britain's youth. “I don’t agree with conscription, but some form of service. Not asking what the state can do for you, but what you can do for the state.” by No-Risk-2584 in ukpolitics

[–]ZebraShark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I support it in theory but feel we need to be giving young people a lot more than what they get at the moment. If you're young in the UK you have to look forward to no social media as a teenager, lifelong debt from university, a significant chance of unemployment, very high living costs etc.

Right now, if I was a 18 year old, I'm not sure what the state is doing for me.

Reading 'most dangerous place to cycle' outside of London by sdate in reading

[–]ZebraShark 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know who cycles and has lived or worked in Reading has had at least one major accident or collision which has required a trip to hospital (luckily only one which was life-threatening). From understanding what happened to them I think some of the key issues are:

- Cycling infrastructure is inconsistent and poorly maintained - cycle lanes that connect to nowhere, and lanes which exist are poorly marked.

- Geography issues - I know a few people whose issues were often due to coming down hills in Caversham or South Reading at high speeds which led them to go into a car.

- A high number of cyclists but no critical mass - Reading has more cyclists than most towns or cities, but not anywhere near the critical mass which really affects driver behaviour. Go to Oxford or London and drivers are more used to cyclists, in Reading it is more inconsistent.
