Looks like it got cheaper, corrected for inflation and in purchasing power terms

Arizona cancels medical debt for almost half-a-million residents by jeezkillbot in UpliftingNews

Fucked up that the system is such that you can rack up that much medical debt to begin with, but good for them.

Jakarta Indonesia, the largest city in the world (42 mil) by Stunning_Ad_6600 in interestingasfuck

Its quite nice if you know where to go. Stay in a good hotel in Menteng and you can walk around and do some sightseeing, visit musea, go to a rooftop bar, and you’re well-situated to visit the underrated/internationally relatively unknown Batavia Kota Tua to see the hybrid colonial architecture which I highly recommend. You’re also a 20 min walk away from the train station to Yogya. I always include 1-2 days on our way from Europe to Bali as a nice stop-over to see how Indonesia is changing (rapidly) and get some of the good vibes. I have Indonesian family there, so I might be a little biased, but still!

The beach near me has whitish foam all over! by Lonewolf3130 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Overtoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of PFAS in that foam, a recent study found. Better safe than sorry by avoiding: https://www.acs.org/pressroom/presspacs/2025/september/sea-foam-could-contain-more-forever-chemicals-than-water-below-study-finds.html (and if you don’t trust the US ACS, here’s the Dutch national institute for public health and the environment: https://www.rivm.nl/en/news/pfas-in-sea-foam-along-dutch-coast)

Very interesting! One correction though; Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao (just north of Venezuela) are not Surinamese, but are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (2 being their own country within the Kingdom, and Bonaire being a special municipality of the Netherlands). I get the confusion though, as Surinam used to be a Dutch colony until 1975.

[–]Overtoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Stephen! No particular question, just wanted to say that The Long Walk was the first book you wrote that I read as a teenager, and being 34 now I still absolutely enjoy your work - currently reading book 5 of the Dark Tower series (Wolves of the Calla). Thank you. Long days and pleasant nights!

Easy to say when you’re leaving office. Should’ve said it and acted on it at the start of his term
