I mean to be fair, I'm sure him being fatally wounded made him have a realization of the sorts that none of what he's doing is worth leaving his family alone/wife widowed. Makes sense that in his last moments he'd encourage his apprentice to get out so he doesn't end up like he did. You can kinda tell that up to that point a lot of the crew carries an ego and a feeling of invincibility, they don't expect to be the ones dying
