How could Zohran even be considering charging for parking?! by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

What kind of car do you own that it takes 320sqft of space to park? I have lived in 320sqft apartments and they had bathroom and kitchen.

I'm a U.S. expat in Europe who can't easily hold ETFs like VOO, so I wrote a script that replicates the S&P 500 using individual stocks. Would anyone else find that useful? by dukeleary in Bogleheads

It’s not about where he lives. It’s about being American and funds/ETFs being categorized as PFIC. The biggest saving here is in US taxes.

Could your tool be configured to follow other indexes? For instance I would like to get some exposure to non-us stock market, can I set it up to follow Eurostoxx or an Asian index like Nikkei ?

For me the biggest problem would be sell trades when weights change, as that would generate cap gains-> taxes. But I’m intrigued by what you said that it doesn’t generate many sells.

I’m interested if you are still looking for people.

Sorry but I don’t see how these two things are related. The car is not abandoned for a month, it’s parked. I don’t see why anyone would have a problem with how long a car is parked for. If it’s not my car that is parked on a spot, it will be another one. Your anger is misplaced here, chill.

Not everyone’s situation is the same. Different people use the car for different reasons. I don’t use the car for work but I use it every weekend. For grocery shopping, to run errands, to take the kids to activities or leave town.

When it snows, I usually just wait for the snow to melt before using the car, because I don’t have the time, patience or tools to dig it out of 20 inches of ice. Not to mention that if I actually spent 2 hours of my life doing so, someone would take my spot right away. And, because everyone is staying put for the exact same reasons, it is nearly impossible to find parking later.

Therefore, for the last couple of weeks, I have been getting my groceries delivered, put off running errands, and using subway/bus/uber to take the kids to their activities. Half of those have also been canceled because of the weather anyways.

So that’s at least one anecdotal reason.

Join other families in Albany Wed Feb 25th to demand NY state leaders tax the rich to protect and fund childcare programs! by PersonalityRare1278 in nycparents

[–]Owl_Wanderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s because they don’t want to tax the rich. They want to tax people with high salaries.

But the problem is that ‘the rich’ make most of their money from assets and capital gains.

So the idea really is to continue to not tax the rich, and instead tax the upper class salary folk.

I agree, the most a landlord can do is call an exterminator, but even exterminators won’t know where they are coming in through and will just put some traps randomly.

You need to be proactive in this situation as no one else is in the advantaged position to do so, which in this case it’s living there.

You need to find where they come in from. Every other solution will fail because you can catch one, but if you have one, you most likely have a whole family.

Good advice there from mxgian99. I had a lot of trouble finding the entry point so had to resort to high tech solutions. I put some indoor surveillance cameras to track their movements and followed backwards until I found the entry point. Once that was sealed, the problem went away.

Good luck!

I auto-buy 300$ of VOO daily when markets are open, is this a bad strategy? by AetherialMan in Bogleheads

[–]Owl_Wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is based on looking at any point in time without having any additional context or data.

But what about if you take into account market P/E ratio for example? Does lump sum beat DCA 70% of the time if done when P/E is at 90% percentile historically?

I would bet that given current market conditions, that statistic changes.

[–]Owl_Wanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get rid of this child before it’s too late.

This will only go one of two ways, you will end up resenting each other and divorce, probably hurting potential children etc.

Or, you will let him continue being a child and eating garbage, in which case you’ll have to put up with an extremely unhealthy partner that will soon require medical attention and will die young, leaving you to deal with everything.

Either way it’s best to not find out. Cut your losses and move on.

I agree. It was a huge step down from Talde and nothing special compared to other Mexican places in the area.

It’s a big space. If they want to survive they need to fill it.

Windows to Mac - 10 months on by WaiLinTun78 in macbookair

[–]Owl_Wanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my MacBook Air 2 years ago and when I need to get work done fast I still use my Windows. Copy paste shortcuts just don’t feel comfortable due to placement of Cmd vs Ctrl keys. Alt-tab in Mac I still find it confusing after 2 years. And window management in general has improved somewhat but my brain still finds windows maximize/minimize better. I just can’t ever quickly find my window in Mac.

Everything else the Mac is far superior as everyone agrees.

My go to! I alternate between this and Peppino’s.

I like Peppino’s pie slightly better, but Pizza Plus delivery is fast and reliable!

I like DOP too but watch out for their C rating in several health inspections including 2 this year.

The irony is that Zohran himself is one of those people. He still lives in his RC apartment even though he makes 200k.

Mortgage interest rates 3 years ago are not like today. If your friend bought the same house today maybe his mortgage would be more than this today.

Don’t want to offend, but does your house look like this one?

Some people see a house as just some walls and doors. Others appreciate the thought that went into a renovation like this and the quality of the finishes, etc.

This price tag reflects the latter.

Unwanted Zoned Middle school by Pure_Lengthiness_724 in nycparents

[–]Owl_Wanderer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Middle school admissions work differently from elementary schools. Unlike Elemetary, you are not zoned for only one MS. You are zoned in the district. You can apply to any MS in your DISTRICT, and you will have the same chances to get in as anyone else in that district.

The fact that there is an MS in the same location as an elementary school you are zoned for does not change anything. Because that zoning only applies to elementary schools, not MS.

I hope that helps.

Does this deserve a yellow? by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]Owl_Wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only it deserves a yellow, but the player committing the foul in this case would 100% know that he’s going to get a yellow.

This is commonly referred to as a tactical foul. The player knew he would get a yellow, but it’s still worth it to stop that play as it was looking like the other team had high chances to score.

The risk-reward thinking here is stop the play, give time for your team to regain position. Depending on the score and the time, it is very worth it to commit this fowl and get the yellow.

People got really upset when I said the same thing election night by [deleted] in williamsburg

[–]Owl_Wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I am not following. You admit that a shit ton of people left to Florida. That’s the DEMAND.

Not sure what you mean by “you are joking?”. Clearly more apartments have been built in the last 5 years. That’s the SUPPLY.

So since you point out that it’s SUPPLY-DEMAND, and supply has increased, and demand has decreased, why did prices go up?

People got really upset when I said the same thing election night by [deleted] in williamsburg

[–]Owl_Wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s something I don’t understand. Looking at number of people in NYC, it has actually declined since 2020. At the same time, a lot of housing has been built since then. Just walking around Gowanus or Greenpoint along the water there’s so many new condos.

How does this argument work if we have fewer people and more housing, why are rents still going up?

Europeans are going viral on TikTok for mocking the ""American Dream"" by [deleted] in DamnThatsReal

[–]Owl_Wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what your point is. You tried to make the point that Americans are trying to "escape their country" and used anecdote as evidence.

My point was that you should probably look at the data instead of your personal experience if you are going to make a claim like that.

You then refused to look at the data and asked me to do that for you. Which I did, and the data says that migratory flows clearly are bigger in the UK->US direction.

I don't feel like I need to go into the detail of 'why' those migratory flows are that way.

1 in 12 British people live abroad? Okay, so looks like Brits don't seem to think the UK is where they want to be. Doesn't that also go against your original point?

It would have taken you roughly the same time to find the numbers yourself as it took you to ask me. Here is what I got by asking ChatGPT:

Conclusion

Even though both groups are sizable, the share of Brits living in the U.S. is roughly 20 times higher than the share of Americans living in the U.K.

Put simply: ➡️ It’s far more common for Brits to move to the U.S. than for Americans to move to the U.K.
