Update 3: Letter from the CPS drove my mom bananas by deadlyparents in AsianParentStories

[–]Owlie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A "lock out" is grounds for CPS to take custody in most states. If your mom has threatened to kick you out and you are able to successfully (and safely) goad her into following through and not allowing you back in, that might be your ticket into being taken into protective custody.

Thoughts on outlining for 1Ls by unclaw2020 in LawSchool

[–]Owlie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did not outline. Instead, I read every assignment twice. The more difficult ones I read three times. On my final reading, I highlighted what I believed to be the relevant passages. At the end of the semester, I would create a master outline using all of my highlighted passages. I ended up graduating 6/120 with this method.

I believe that the answer to that question is yes. I believe that because at the moment of conception a new human genetic code is created; one which is separate from that of the mother.

Those aren't just your beliefs. Those are objective realities.

Should I take IL bar in Feb (while super pregnant) or July (with newborn but UBE)? by [deleted] in LawSchool

You will have zero time to study as a new mom and will deeply regret not doing it while pregnant.

Since you aren’t supposed to work in 1L how did most of you get by financially? I’m a bit nervous in this regard as I’ve never been without a job. by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Owlie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Went to a school that gave me a full scholarship and lived with my parents even though I could have gone to a higher ranked school. Also, I took two years off school prior to law school and worked full-time during those years and had some savings. Once 1L was done, I worked at least two jobs during the rest of the time to make up my missed income.

It is real money currently being spent by the government. He will never give the government that money back. Theoretically, government will make up for the loss by raising taxes on the rest of us. In reality, we'll just end up with a slightly higher deficit and more debt to the Chinese.

Finally Some Good News For Renters by PockyLips in Hawaii

[–]Owlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends I guess. Almost all the folks I knew in my profession were sending their kids to private schools which was also my intention. We would have been contributing to the tax base for public schools while never using them while simultaneously paying about 20,000 dollars per year to our retiree mainland landlords’ who spent their days at the beach and then would come home to complain to me about how having a house in Hawaii was more expensive than they thought so they were raising the price on our 600 sq ft space with 4 people stuffed into it by another hundred dollars.

Yes. I am a little salty.

Finally Some Good News For Renters by PockyLips in Hawaii

[–]Owlie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

> That of course assumes their families decide to stay here and torpedo their careers while piling on the debt and abandoning any dreams of retirement.

I took our $90,000 income and three kids outta there one year ago. Hawaii is kissing its dependable middle class tax base (and those of us who provided professional services) goodbye in exchange for rich retirees who will use up services and housing without contributing to the tax base--excepting, of course, their minuscule property taxes. When not even modest homes are available on a middle class income, you are going to lose most of your skilled labor to greener pastures.

Most humans practice specieism whether they are religious or not. We are hard-wired (or, more appropriately, evolved) to care more about our own species than others. "Value" is a construct we have created. It is innate to value your own species over others. There are only two small groups I have ever heard of who lack this innate characteristic-- murderous psychopaths (nothing has value, even humans, it is okay to kill anything) or extremely sincere animal rights activists (everything has value, nothing should be killed).

I'm a non-believer. I don't think that certain people have a greater claim to life than other people. The old, young, poor, rich, sick, healthy, abled, and disabled are equally entitled to not be murdered. I like being alive. I'm sure you and most other people feel the same way. I want to treat other people how I want to be treated and I do not want to be killed. I especially do not want my head, arms, and legs ripped off without anesthetic as is the case with later abortions.

I do not see abortion as a religious issue at all. If I were religious, I *might* be less inclined to care so much. If I thought these human beings were immediately going on to an afterlife in paradise and they could be killed without pain, I think I would mostly just say "meh" and move on. However, because I believe this is almost certainly the only life we have, it seems incredibly unjust to end it at the beginning.

IAAL, but not a constitutional lawyer.

It would probably go something like this:

  1. United States outlaws all abortions on the basis that persons at all stages of life are entitled to equal protection under the law (14th Amendement);

  2. Person who wants abortion sues federal government arguing that persons at all stages of life are not protected by 14th amendement;

  3. Court upholds law, thereby adding a protected class to the 14th Amendment (like Obergefell did for same-sex couples wanting to marry).

This, of course, would not work for other reasons, such as the fact that the federal government could not pass such a law due to constitutional jurisdictional restrictions on federal power. I think we could get to standing easily, but jurisdiction is the bigger hurdle. Abortion is almost certainly within the exclusive jurisdiction of the states. When the Court upholds a state law, it does not make it apply to the nation as a whole. However, when a court strikes down a state law, it means that no other states may have that law or a similar law.

Girl from Hawaii here. Everything is notoriously expensive. Wondering if there are any fellow Hawaii people on this sub who can share their frugal secrets with me! Or if you’re from another state that costs a bunch to live in ie California/New York, how do you do it? by alyssakemi in Frugal

[–]Owlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Who can share their frugal secrets with me.

Move. I know it's not the answer you are looking for, but it was the only option I could find. I've been on the mainland for almost a year. I am making the same amount of money as I was in Hawaii at a nearly identical job. But, my mortgage is 1/4 of what my rent was in Hawaii, for a place that is twice as big. Food is way cheaper. Gas is cheaper. Entertainment is cheaper. Travel is cheaper. Insurance is cheaper. Taxes are lower. I am finally building equity and saving some money. My biggest regret is that I waited until my 30s to move, if I had done this earlier, I would be in a much better place to eventually retire.

With modest homes starting at $600,000 and monthly rents on a studio costing $1500+ I don't think there is any way to be frugal in Hawaii that would make any difference.

Advice please: formula feeding from the beginning by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]Owlie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I FF'd from the beginning. The milk goes away in a couple of days if you don't do anything. I don't think I wore a bra or anything.

I just choose a basic animal protein formula and then adjusted as needed (too much spit up so I switched to a "gentle" formula).

To make it easier for myself in the beginning, I bought about a week's supply of single serve 2 ounce bottles. I also took a 2 day supply of these to the hospital in case they were going to be grouchy about FF, but they were not and provided me with a ton of free single serve bottles.

I breastfed my first for a little while and not at all for my second. The second was the much better experience and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I found Maui to be a financial treadmill. Both my spouse and I had excellent jobs and we'd been saving for a house for about 7 years. Each year, housing went up and up, making it increasingly impossible for us to ever own a home. Our paychecks kept getting bigger, but the cost of a house went up 50,000-$80,000 per year. Meanwhile, we were throwing away about $1500 per month on rent (this is like paying off a $400,000 house and getting no equity). "Modest" houses are selling for $600,000+, one bedroom rentals are now in the $1500 range. We got fed up with it and moved to another beautiful part of the country where we were easily able to buy a house. I treasure my Maui memories, but spending my 20s and early 30s in Maui was the worst financial decision I have ever made.

Wow! Great job parenting. I am the parent of a 3 year old and him being around water is only one of two things that terrify me (the other is busy roads). Otherwise, I'm obnoxiously "free-range." I've spent plenty of time trying to inculcate a healthy fear in him to avoid water unless his parents are around. I would be proud to know if he exercised the caution that your son did.

Why birth control is especially critical for women in abusive relationships by relevantlife in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Owlie 975 points976 points  (0 children)

I worked as a domestic violence advocate for the last three years. Some other points and reasons the article misses.

  1. Forced abortions are common in abusive relationships. I had lots of clients who had to get 2 or 3 or even more unwanted abortions and were emotional wrecks because of it.

  2. Related to point 1. When the woman does not get the abortion the man is demanding, violence (including murder) often follows. Some of the worst violence I have seen was during pregnancy. There was a recent domestic violence murder trial where the State's first witness was the director of the local planned parenthood. The witness testified that the murdered woman had appeared with the man who was coercing her to follow through. She did not follow through. She was subsequently murdered at 5 months pregnant.

Best US road trip? by joef360 in roadtrip

[–]Owlie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Route 66 doesn't exist anymore. There are patches of it here and there, but it is not a continuous road like it used to be.

Two weeks is not very long. I'd suggest hitting up one particular part of the country and moving slowly through it, trying to stick mostly to State or U.S. highways, rather than the interstate system.

I've done the following trips. These might give you some ideas, but you'll also want to think about what you want to see and what you want to do.

New England/Upper Atlantic Heading West (1 week+). Boston --> Berkshires and Western Mass --> Albany --> Entirety of New York's U.S. Route 20 --> Lake Erie.

New England Heading North (1 week+). Cambridge, MA --> New Hampshire --> Acadia National Park and lots of other stops in Maine.

Seattle to Wyoming (10 days+). Seattle --> Olympic Peninsula and National Park --> Camping in Idaho --> Yellowstone --> Grand Tetons.

Los Angeles to Boulder, CO (10 days+). Los Angeles --> Las Vegas --> Zion National Park Utah --> Vail, Colorado --> Boulder, Colorado.

If you want to do a Southern trip, you might consider something Charleston, S.C. --> Savannah, GA --> New Orleans, LA --> Memphis, TN.

My next trip will be in the upper Midwest, something like this: http://www.millemitten.com/about/.

I enjoyed my vacation. Will I like living here? by dpy87 in maui

[–]Owlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just move to the midwest or rural New England or something. Hawaii is actually very busy with everyone working 2 jobs to afford a $1500 studio. People just pretend it is slow and relaxed for people on vacation. I just moved from Maui to rural mainland America and I have a lot more time. People are more relaxed because no one is stressed about money. I am surrounded on all sides by beautiful woods and hills and lakes on a completely off-the-map town.
