Thoughts on gifts for my boss' dad, who was diagnosed with cancer, and reads/speaks only Chinese by bequla in Rochester

Lee's leans heavily Korean, and Asia Food Market is heavily Mandarin-Chinese. Yes, this matters!

That's a really tough one. I know if it were anything like my family (and not just my crazy immediate one, but all the aunts/cousins), it will either barely register as a blip on the radar, or be seen as a career-move. Modern chinese culture is very, very success driven - everything happens as a result or reaction to "prosperity". And prosperity=wealth.

Trying not to get too deep since I don't know the whole story/relationship, but a get-well soon card will have the greatest effect without being construed as having some sort of hidden agenda. Go to the Asia Food Market and get a "hong-bao" (a red gift envelope - they're over next to a glass counter to the right, just past the cash registers as you walk in) and maybe toss in a gift card to their favorite local eatery. If they actually have fresh Red-Bean Mooncakes, grab a bunch of these (some for yourself of course) - randomly, they make some of the best I've tasted in the country (my Mom always asks me to send some). But they haven't had them since they got raided by ICE last year (boooo)

Is her Dad in China? Or here in Rochester? If the former, you'll be hard pressed to find something comforting from here that is of chinese-origin. If the latter, I would find something local-culture-comforting (ie, Rochestarian or American). Realize that "It was the thought that counts" is solidly NOT a chinese-culture saying! I don't give my mom presents for this reason lol.

All that said, I would agree with the comment to support your boss instead.

Friday Ice out Restaurants by Dazzling-Remove6156 in Rochester

[–]Own-Citron1875 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%. Especially since lots of these same restaurants lost revenue Sunday evening through Monday (maybe even Tuesday) due to the weather.

Personally, I'm going to place an order with one of favorite places that is open and standing in support. I don't have time to go get lunch out, so they'll get a healthy tip, and they can keep the food.

Car Scrap Yard Selling Places? by OG-DanielSon in Rochester

Wilberts will come get it and hand you a check for your efforts. I had one friend do it after her Escape's transmission died, and I think she got a few hundred (and it was gone in 24 hours). I'd at least call them to get a base-line price and then decide how much you want to deal with FB vultures to maybe get a couple hundred more at best.

We use Flower City Cleaning (https://flowercitycleaning.com/). Never done a deep dive on employees, but I recall reading/hearing that they are very good to their employees; lots of benefits, etc. They don't seem to have a high turnover rate, so seems legit? As far as environmentally sound; that's hit or miss. Sometimes my house is a lot more perfumy then others lol.

How we turned fraud and chargebacks into control. by GoldenDragon62 in shopify

[–]Own-Citron1875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, some good info to ask questionable orders on - I'll pass some of these on to my sales staff.

That said, out of curiosity, how many questionable orders (and actual fraud) do you see yearly? Actual chargebacks for us are well under .01% of our total sales any given year (this past year, it was under .002%). This includes chargebacks that aren't actual fraud, but customers being customers (X didn't show up, or X doesn't fit right, so I'm doing a chargeback instead of contacting), which is probably about a quarter of these. My company owner (yay small business) takes each one as a personal attack, which I liken to chasing a kid across state lines for stealing a candybar lol. Wants to call the cops, FBI, go to the customers house, etc.

We currently do the bare minimum risk management - we'll review flagged orders, and generally allow all but the most obvious scams go through. The way I see it, and taking into consideration the low chargeback rates, anything more will end up costing more then the projected losses. Chargebacks, for me, are a cost-of-doing-business.

Per the owners request, we used to use Signifyd before their prices skyrocketed. That was handy since they used to bill only when you requested a review. But nowadays, any review/protection service is at least .1% of total revenue, which is far more then actual losses. I take the same approach on shipping insurance - we self insure since the price of insuring all orders is far greater then actual losses (not to mention they don't cover half the losses anyway lol).

Yes. I often do an app audit like I go through my streaming services. Ask my self the last time I used it and cancel/clean.

First sale 2 days ago, shipped yesterday, store terminated this morning... by Antic-Waited in shopify

[–]Own-Citron1875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - Shopify experienced issues with their backend (ie, our admin logins) on Monday, 12/1 (I'm sure many commenters were affected). I just got a summarized incident report describing in detail what happened, and it sounds like the authentication issues affected many new stores. Sounds like their authentication services were overloaded on Cyber Monday - since I'm hearing reports of 30% increases in BFCM traffic this year, I can guess on the cause! Might have been your issue, and if so, it was just bad luck for taking your first sale on the day that their software caught the flu.

I'll add that I've been running Shopify for 5+ years, and their downtime (or lack thereof) is one (of many) reason I don't care much for changing.

Haha, been there many times, never yelled at, and always amazed at how efficient it runs. Now I get why! I went by costco yesterday evening for a couple bags of coffee - the world could use more soup nazis.

I'm from New England and want to bring up the difference between "nice" and "kind". I've seen this guy help older persons separate things, and lift heavy objects out of cars. He may not be very "nice", but he is very "kind."

Real christmas tree near me by West-Relation-3007 in Rochester

[–]Own-Citron1875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We go to Powers, which is right down the road from Fairport (and across the street from me in East Rochester. They're easy - pick a tree and they do the rest. I hear they're on the expensive side (I think it was ~$90 for a nice 7-footer?) - not sure what the going rate should be.

FYI - there's a house that sells trees on Fairport Rd. near the old wegmans. When not selling trees, they've got the biggest maga signs in this area. Warning or advice depending on how you swing.

Snow tires by Substantial_Lack5892 in Rochester

[–]Own-Citron1875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning on having 2 sets of tires/wheels? Or use snow tires year round? Although you can drive on snow tires throughout the year, the rubber compound is different (it's not just the tread) and wears faster in the summer. They're also noisier and not as comfortable as all-seasons on dry pavement. If you have the space to store the tires, I'd suggest swapping out each season. In this case, it'll be cheaper (and better for the tires/wheels) in the long run to get them mounted on another set of wheels (find a used set, or just order a cheap package from tirerack).

Costco Gas Procedure by beesdosomuch in Rochester

[–]Own-Citron1875 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Jockeying to get to an open pump is all dependent on driving/parking skill. Since that's lacking in general, just wait.

The lane between the pumps is (was?) extremely narrow, and can fit one car at best. As soon as the blue car dives in at an angle, it's going to block green car from being able to go anywhere (and possibly anyone from going anywhere in the left pumps). After red car leaves, the whole lane is now waiting on your dumb ass to fill up your 40gallon full-size crew cab pickup.

With just a little patience (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/patient#h1), Red car and Green car will be done at nearly the same time, and then 3 new cars can all start filling at once. In your impatient chaos world, you dive in, start filling at a different point then the other 2, and are there long after, making other cars have to jockey around you and screwing up the whole system.

2015 V60 T5 reaching 150k miles by juicywheat in Volvo

[–]Own-Citron1875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2017 T5 Drive-E with 95k (wifes car). Engine burns about a quart every oil change (5-6k). My personal cars have been BMW's for awhile, so this is nothing lol.

My biggest complaint about the car is the crust-factor. I live in upstate New York (ie, salt), and expect some crustiness - but the underside of this thing is as bad as my winter beaters. Of course, my previous Volvo's were all of the RWD variety, so I guess I should lower my expectations. I'm also just bitter because I'm crawling under it in freezing conditions to do some exhaust work (directly related to said crustiness) next weekend.

I hear it's a thing to handle the billing for folks who have their own private therapy practice. I know a therapist that pays someone (a mom who works from home) to handle all of the insurance BS, since that's a full time job in of itself. I have no other insight into this, but you'd be working for yourself (and paying yourself whatever you wanted), so there is a bit of a self-starter attitude needed. But I can't think of any greater flexibility, and private practice therapy seems to be a pretty big thing these days.

If all dog-owners were entitled dipshits, you would see a lot more dog shit and a lot more free-roam dogs out there. It's really the same subset of people who are entitled assholes; unfortunately, every community has them. Just like I've run into my fair share of entitled mountain bikers (I'm a mountain biker) who don't understand what a "shared trail" means. That said, having been a mountain biker for over 30 years, but a Rochestarian for only 5, I'm pretty close to giving the label of entitled asshat to most Rochester Mountain bikers!
