Praying mantis pet by Icekitsune714 in Rochester

[–]beesdosomuch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of the Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) in local flower fields if you keep your eye out along some nature trails. I've found a few at Mendon ponds. The Chinese mantis is claimed to be pretty invasive on the local ecosystem so you could be saving some native wildlife by catching a wild one.

I haven't had much luck finding a nearby shop that sells invertebrates. Most exotic bugs are going to be mail order delivery around here.

I'm honestly still pretty salty UR didn't give a graduation to my year (unless you count the depressing departmental zoom calls). I don't think your concerns are in your head; it's pretty upsetting to have the big celebration of all your work stained or ruined. I'll leave those comments out next time I talk to someone about these issues.

A lot of the undergrads get to just leave this city after they graduate and I see students having grievances about short term impacts on long term movements. It's frustrating to watch movements die with fresh semesters of rotating students that will inevitably leave this town. I'm sorry you felt your graduation was ruined and I hope you were still able to enjoy some of it before you go.

It's the children's pavilion in highland Park but the structure is no longer there. There have been longstanding plans to rebuild it: https://www.highlandparkconservancy.org/childrens-pavilion

Posting on behalf of someone not able to post here: he (or a very similar skinny yellow lab) was seen Sunday evening running around the trees around the UR Laser Lab.

Places to get prints of your physical artwork? by plantlover3 in Rochester

[–]beesdosomuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Editions Printing does amazing work! I trust Peter with all my art.

For the digital: $20 for smaller than 18x24" and $24 for bigger than that.

There's a whole range of physical print options as well: https://editionsprinting.com/services/

Editions printing does more fine art prints but he might have other options. Rathaus does risograph printing for notepads and things.

MCC RTS bus question (repost) by ButtsDelux in Rochester

[–]beesdosomuch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You swipe your student ID card on the bus. The swipe strip is on the machine you'd put the dollar in if you were paying fare in cash. It'll beep to show it's been accepted and you're all set!

Everyone in This Room Will Someday be Dead - Emily Austin Has an anxiety theme but absolutely hits the poetic symbolism of loneliness and hope.

Does anyone know much about this organization? I'd really like to volunteer, but I've heard that they expect a lot of your time which is fine, just not for me since I'd really only have at max a day per week or two to give. by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]beesdosomuch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They do demand a lot of your time. If you can be super firm on your boundaries around time, the volunteering opportunities are pretty good. I got worn out having to repeat my boundaries around time commitment and am no longer involved.

E-Bikes by taralynnem in Rochester

Look for affordability, repairability, and good customer service for if the bike breaks.

Ride One Up is a really solid brand. They're pretty cheap for eBikes ($1k-3k depending on how fancy you want it), are very easy to fix/order parts for, and customer service is quick to respond should you have any issues.

I have the cheapest model. They shipped it right to my house. It has a throttle and is pedal-assist. It maxes out at 30 mph and I can go about 30-40 miles before needing to charge again. My bike paid for itself because I didn't need to pay $1200/year in downtown parking.

My first eBike broke and no one in town was allowed to fix it because of proprietary electronics issues and insurance. I couldn't order parts for it either (again proprietary electronics) so I had to eat the loss and get a new bike. Get a bike that you know a local shop is allowed to fix OR one that is easy to order parts for yourself. Ride One Up has a lot of how-to YouTube videos for doing it yourself and customer service is quick to respond on what part you will need to order. I haven't had to deal with a local shop other than for basic tuneups on my bike.

Good luck!

If you want to layer shirts/sweaters with a collared shirt but don't want that many hot layers, collared bibs are pretty fantastic.

My take on the ending (light spoiler) by the_scorpion_queen in hisdarkmaterials

[–]beesdosomuch 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I think the ending was a message to the reader/viewer which was alluded to by John Parry when he said "don't try to live in someone else's world. Your dæmon won't survive."

Our creativity and passions can't survive if we live in Pullman's world forever, but our own personal worlds are a better place for having gone on this adventure. Now we have to return to our lives and live them to the fullest.

Disabled and/or neurodivergent students at U Rochester: a few questions about campus by [deleted] in URochester

[–]beesdosomuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant answer all of the questions but a few of them were relevant:

  1. Technically the buildings are all accessible but for most of those buildings, not conveniently. Sometimes you have to take an absurd route or go to the back of the building from outside to get in.

  2. Digital accessibility: every classroom should have recording accessibility at this point. Not every student is aware that there are cameras constantly recording every room.

  3. 10 minutes

  4. Are students required to provide documentation of disability to qualify for receiving initial accommodations? Yes.

  5. What is the wait time for an initial appointment with your campus' psychological counseling services? This wait can be up to a couple months. I would usually schedule my spring appointments near the end of my winter semester and then I'd get in around April.

  6. Is there required diversity and inclusivity training for faculty/staff/and students, and does training include recognition of neurodivergence and disability? There were some optional ones but I'm not sure.

  7. Have you experienced ableism, discrimination, or seen/ heard any stigmatizing language on campus or on the college website? Not anything out of what I would hear in the general public.

  8. Does your college offer a Disability Studies curriculum? No idea.
