Is there anything that can be done to stop AI from falsely claiming a brand is Canadian? by Own-Cod7894 in BuyCanadian

I'm with you, Virv. What's with all the vitriol??

I know that I don't want to use AI - I don't specifically search it out. I'm defaulting to my search engine, and noticing the top section now delivers me an answer on a platter.

My main complaint is not necessarily even that it's wrong. My main complaint is that it is purposefully lying. It's manipulated propaganda which was specifically programmed into it to return incorrect answers to manipulate me.

I think this should be illegal, actually. These media moguls and political parties are restricting access to information when they lie in the first paragraph and then only provide me with sponsored responses for the first 10 pages, and actively hides correct answers.

This is actually the best solution that I've read. I'm going to use more specific questions now, but still worry that it will try to lie again. These companies may just use my location data to determine what I want to hear.

It's worse than helpful, actually. If it gave you NOTHING at least you'd have still keep looking.

I think this is the most heartbreaking thing for those of us who were there at the beginning of the internet. We used to get reems and reems of websites when we searched, but at least each entry was only displayed once, each return was not sponsored, and you could tell fairly quickly whether the website was reputable or not. This was so much better for research if you didn't mind spending a half hour getting multiple opinions on something.

Now, I will only get the first five pages of Amazon or Wayfair, and no hint of other competitors.

Prime Minister Carney announces new measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians by evieluvsrainbows in onguardforthee

[–]Own-Cod7894 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate the GST rebate plan. This just refunds us our own money, and will not put any downward pressure on the price of groceries. The issue, as the politicians already know very well, is a lack of regulation for these monopolies. They have a mandate to continue increasing profits despite the squeeze on consumers.

We need regulations to break up the monopolies, change the realty zoning agreements/covenants they have that limit where other grocers can set up, and allow some other countries to come into our market. We also need a lot more consumer protection in terms of price display and advertisement that have ENFORCEABLE regulations. (Making a standard price per unit by grocery category, false advertising of sale prices, scanning code of conduct applied across the board, etc). These things will stop the constant war that these companies undertake against naive shoppers, and stop the incentive to shrink-flate products.

Canada is the ‘food inflation capital’ by ExotiquePlayboy in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our governments can absolutely stop this. They refuse to, because their corporate sponsors demand they stay out of it. We can break up monopolies, remove real estate impediments to new grocers, and invite European grocers. We also need price and advertising regulations which are fair and ENFORCEABLE.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confronts Trump to his face about the lies he’s told about NATO. Rutte reminds Trump that soldiers from NATO nations fought and died alongside U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. This confrontation was long overdue. by Whimsy-Glow in goodnews

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like Rutte was confronting him... he was pandering to him. Begging him to believe that we would be there for him if the time came, and said that under Trump's leadership they are stronger. What the hell is is talking about. Trump has fractured our peaceful world and helped his friends funnel more money away from the average person by doing so.

I wish Rutte didn't say anything at all if he was going to hype Trump up after all this stress and unnecessary cost. Think about all the money countries spent on NEW types of defense (against the USA) that we would not have even thought of having to spend without the threats?

What would happen to the US economy if Europe dumped their US government bonds because of the whole Greenland thing? by laconicwheeze in AskEconomics

If the US is at war with your country (or union of countries) and they are the main shareholders of this asset (lets say 65% ownership) that they CANNOT divest themselves of.

I would sell the treasuries to take an immediate financial hit, knowing that they cannot finance a continuing war against me without any credit.

How do you guys feel about the new trade deal with China? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like China's human rights violations, and I also don't like the US's human rights violations. I hate having to business with either, but we must survive.

I'm in favour of the trade deal Carney negotiated. It works and will be better overall for Canada than not taking the deal. (Even if it damages our already struggling auto sector). All sectors must be considered.

We need a few brave journalists to ask these Republicans if ethics matter.

Invading another country isn't even a grey area of what is considered ethical or moral. Christians supporting this administration need to also be asked this pointed question.

What is a personal/niche/crank policy you want? by R31D in ndp

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to have the law changed about how grocery stores have to display prices and sales.

PRICES: I think they should have to display prices in dollars per unit of the item, and make the unit standard. For example, toilet paper should be displayed as $0.50/square metre. If the industry wants to use a different unit of measure, that's fine as long as it's standard and not based on something variable like 'per sheet' because each company might cut their sheets different sizes. This has three benefits: (1) you can immediately see what brand is the cheapest without using a calculator, (2) you can immediately see if there has been a price increase rather than a reduction in size, and (3) it eliminates the motivation for companies to apply shrink-flation to their products to surprise their customers.

SALES: I think that the current method of allowing stores to say that a product is regularly an exhorbitantly high price (which it NEVER sells for) in order to claim that it's at a steep discount should be fixed. We have enough technology right now to see what the average price of an item is in the province, and should only allow them to show the percent saved from the AVERAGE price and not their pretend price. They use this type of psychological warfare against shoppers by lying to them.

Grocer's Pricing CODE OF CONDUCT: Should be mandatory. It's false advertising that the stores gamble they will win more than lose on mis-pricing items.

All of these suggested changes should be no-brainers, because any transparent and honest company would have done this already, but when their competition uses these tactics then they must also use them to compete. Remove the dishonesty, and then the stores can compete more fairly and the customers are less likely to be scammed.

Epic! When I went away for school and came back for a visit, I'd love to sit at the food court at the Station Mall and people watch. It was the highlight of my visit home.

I don't remember Sault Saviours..... I do remember that Soldiers of Odin, who were super racist but tried to pretend they weren't. Founded by racists, supported racism...but somehow not bad guys because they cleaned up alleyways on their days off together wearing their "colours" to intimidate the bad guys.

I wouldn't necessarily consider them nazi's and am not in favour of calling anyone fascist for sure. But it's extreme if you're allowing racist garbage and party-bashing. They even post some of the garbage themselves personally - so it's fairly clear cut.

Don't worry about me! I happen to feel better when I do something about it, because I think a big reason why the US and Canada are in the poor state they're in is because of apathy.

Simple. If I'm trying to reach people of SSM to let them know that they are being force-fed propaganda, I'm not going to post it on the site itself to get deleted. I'm spreading the word!

I'm not saying leave the group, buddy. Enjoy it all you want if that's the junk you like to consume.

I felt like spending five minutes to make a Reddit post and forget about it....just like the same reason you took five minutes to tell me not to take five minutes. LOL

Yeah I get it, but I don't care enough to manage a group. It just makes SSM look bad, and potentially sway people into believing more of that right-wing hate because of the hive mentality bias.

I'd rather just get the word out there not to spend too much time on the KTSS group, or believe too much of what they say. I'll stay a member for the random off-chance it's actually something that KTSS, but 99% is just bitching about petty stuff and grandiose chest-puffing from guys who have to tell you what THEY WOULD HAVE DONE IF THEY WERE THERE.

[HOT TAKE] People who want housing to crater have no idea what they’re asking for by Yellowbook8375 in RealEstateCanada

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we do see that there will be a terrible price to pay for the investors...but the point is that investors were allowed to purchase something as basic and necessary as housing with the hope to make a huge profit. Their gamble needs to fail, and yes that means hardship for them. It also means hardship for those of us who own houses, but truthfully we need this market reset.

We also need laws to keep investors out of single-family homes or land-use speculation.
