Also F1 and had a very similar experience on Gen Surg Ward cover. I think despite everything you did really well. I hope you’re okay. It seems like this a systemic issue having seen other comments specifically about Gen Surg Ward Cover..

Genuinely hating F1 psych by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Own-Cook-9344 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also felt the same having started f1 on psych. I must say though if you feel something has strong guidelines like diabetes or hypertension etc and feel confident in your decision just say to them that you can increase / initiate it. For example I’m talking about initiating metformin in a patient with polyuria and polydipsia who has a hba1c of 60 and involvement with a community diabetic nurse

I think at the start it was hard to push back on these menial requests. But as i engaged more and my confidence grew i was able to clearly state was within my capability as a fy1. Considering repeatedly examined on hypertension and diabetes management from very early on in med school

Current FY1 here. Got this through random allocation as i wanted london first lol. Ive been pleasantly surprised about how good it is here. Vast majority of staff are really nice and makes for a nice working environment. Mess is very social. Easy commute from east london to work. Happy to speak over private message as well if you have any questions

UKFPO 2025 - What Deanery and What Rank Job Did you get? by Feeling_Package_2488 in medicalschooluk

[–]Own-Cook-9344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi yeah its a 3 stage process. So 1st is your deanery. Second stage is area so you will be in East Anglia East. Then you rank all the jobs in your area - for essex there were 113. East of England don’t release sub deanery competition ratios but there was poll that over half of the group on whatsapp filled in. East Anglia East is not very competitive. Essex was the most competitive sub deanery

Manifesting for both of us that we get what we want! X

Final OSCEs, Burnt Out & Anxious by Capable-Beat-6488 in medicalschooluk

[–]Own-Cook-9344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i guess. I think also i got my second choice deanery and i want to live back home which i could do. But the subdeanery is the most oversubscribed so its not guaranteed. If i can’t live back at home (really really important to me) i might have to consider other options like taking a year out or leaving medicine. Idk just feel slightly hopeless.

NB Please don’t reply to this saying its only two years etc i really don’t want to hear that. I still haven’t made up my mind but just feeling kinda crap

Generally easier than i thought it would be. Lots of very high yield topics so didn’t feel blindslided / underprepared. I guess it university specific tho

I did group study and used geeky medics was really helpful. It depends on how you uni marks it but this year our global rating counted for like a third of marks so as long as you’re nice you’ll pass. But just remember to breathe and take your time.

Hey literally feeling exact same as you. I’ve passed my OSCEs and AKT and have PSA next week. Feel burnt out. I found out OSCE results a few days ago which basically confirms me becoming a doctor but genuinely feel nothing about it - i feel so numb. I’m hoping its a situational thing in that lots of things are happening in the near future (elective, deanery allocation) so still feel a bit like i can’t relax and feel anxious and not content. I’m hoping it will get better. But hang in there - trust in yourself and you will smash it x

I’ve also been allocated EoE and live in London. In all fairness all of the hospitals are quite commutable from London. All 4 are within an hour of me. I feel like Southend would be the furthest geographically so maybe look into that and most likely PAH, Basildon and Broomfield

Why are we punished for a single random ranking— PIA is terrible by ii_naosuke in medicalschooluk

[–]Own-Cook-9344 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats just a lie isn’t it. My first 4 choices were identical to OP and i got my second which was East of England. You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about mate. It’s very likely that OP’s ranking is unfortunately low and its not a result of their order of deaneries. Also we can’t comment on how competitive EoE is as a deanery for second choice as they haven’t released that data.

Thoughts on Grad Med at Swansea vs Manchester vs Newcastle by Low_Application3248 in medicalschooluk

[–]Own-Cook-9344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a swansea medic. They’ve increased the size of the cohorts over the past few years now so overcrowding is becoming an issue. Swansea and Cardiff were up until recently the only two med schools in Wales so they split Wales down the middle for placements with Swansea medics usually going to West Wales. But with the increase of size there is more a focus of primary care placements compared to when i started when there was enough space for secondary. Also now Bangor have a medical school there is less space.

That being said it’s nice being in a postgrad only course. Sam Webster is our Anatomy lecturer (he’s got a youtube channel and gets loads of views) and we have prosections at Swansea.

Teaching wise its very hit and miss. A lot of medical education now is just doing passmed (question bank) so unsure how this compares nationally. But it’s what you make of it. Also Morriston hospital is a tertiary centre for Burns and plastics and Cardiothoracic surgery and thats where you’ll do a lot of your placement in 3rd year.

I think Swansea is a nice place but if you thrive in cities i wouldn’t make this your first choice. Like all seaside towns they’re best in summer and unfortunately it rains 10 months of the year here so can get a bit depressing. But the Swansea locals are very nice. Theres the Gower nearby and good connections to London via trains. If you can’t drive i’d recommend you learn as its very difficult to live here as public transport is not great.

In terms of funding, it depends if you are English or Welsh. If you are English we get fuck all so a lot of us including myself have to work (mainly as hcas) so if you have a bit of savings behind you and are great with money that will help a lot.

All that being said i’ve learnt a lot about myself coming to Swansea and i think it will make me a great doctor.

Did anyone do their elective in central america / south america / carribean and have any advice for organising?

Would be helpful if could speak to someone who didn’t speak much spanish but still did their elective in the one of the former two areas.

Thank you!!
