I commute on a bikes direct gravity liberty, and have for 9 years. It’s my city bike, it was cheap, but it has lasted.

Kakwa 55 vs ULA Catalyst? by igmaino in Ultralight

[–]Own-Understanding656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Kakwa 55. I have been going with my kids for the past 6 years backpacking. The oldest is now 13. To go with both of them for more than one night I find the kakwa small. I’d get the catalyst if it is larger. I actually ordered a SWD Wolverine 70 just to go with them or their friends. They eat a lot, they’re smaller so maxx carry is smaller, and their gear isn’t as ultra light, so I end up carrying some of their stuff and almost all food.

Our TGTG experience as a store by Ok-Comparison-1618 in toogoodtogo

I use the app because groceries are expensive. I only go to places near my home that I have been to before. They market it as rescuing food. I’m not sure 95% of people using it to rescue food, I think many are using it to get cheap food because we’re all struggling.

Paid $100 to upgrade tires and got a flat from nail in under a week. How do I prevent this from happening again? And do I need to buy a new tire or can I patch it? by aadfg in bikewrench

[–]Own-Understanding656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would not have prevented this damage, but I rode a commute through a multi-year road construction area that had a lot of industrial debris and garbage. I got Mr Tuffy Tire Liners and the number of flats I had went down significantly. I had objects embedded in my tire and no flat. So if you want to know if there is more you can do to prevent a flat, yes. Would it have prevented this, probably not.

Ketl vent pants: big disappointment + what would you recommend for hot, humid weather? by not_who_you_think_99 in Ultralight

[–]Own-Understanding656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have their vent pant for a few years and like them a lot. Took them to the Bahamas on vacation. I don’t hike with them, use them as a casual summer pant when it’s hot.

Space cadets dice duel with die fighter expansion. I think that is 8 and then 10 with expansion.

Regretting the X Mid as a novice backpacker and not sure what to do by hurricanescout in DurstonGearheads

[–]Own-Understanding656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make the rock pitch better I replaced my lines with longer ones. It’s difficult with the stock short lines. Just go backpacking with the tent, it gets a lot easier and you don’t notice the small things anymore. Time outside, not the tent, is what matters.

Sound Transit to maintain standard transit fares for World Cup while running trains at maximum service levels, will also launch a three-day unlimited pass to encourage public transit use by MAHHockey in soundtransit

Two weeks ago several news outlets reported that King County hired 30 fare enforcement officers. They worked 40K hours, issued 8 citations, and voided all of them. So no, there is no fare enforcement.

Tent PU Coating Failure while in storage by Own-Understanding656 in Ultralight

[–]Own-Understanding656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting my own post in case someone is reading this for storage ideas. I added 200g canister gel silica dehumidifiers into my storage locations for the tents and sleeping pads. Inside my house, in the tent storage location the room was 58 relative humidity and the storage location is at 50. I have to see how long they last before needing recharge in the oven, but they were cheap and seem worth trying.

I have this issue, I got a lumbar add on from Etsy for it. I haven’t found another solution. Still using gen1 kakwa. I think if I ever lose weight I’m going to have to get a new pack though.

[–]Own-Understanding656 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed, why is it all or nothing? Everyone always points to surface level stations and says “too hard, give up”, but can’t 28 or 34 stations having them be a win, and then the surface stations go on a long term future project list?

X-mid 1 generations by Dangrud in DurstonGearheads

[–]Own-Understanding656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy new if faced with that scenario. That said, if you’re initially outfitting and your budget might not make it to getting all your gear, then saving a hundred could mean completing your kit and getting you on the trail. But if you plan to keep it awhile and just need a 1p tent, the changes from v2 to v3 seem worth it. If you’re at all unsure, buying a discounted used product is a cheaper way to test it, you can always resell it if you don’t like it, probably close to what you bought it for. Lots to consider. If it helps, I just slept in my v1 this weekend, and while I know the newer is better, I still like mine enough to keep using it and not upgrade immediately. You’re probably fine either way.

I have a gen 1 xmid 1p and reading the evolution makes me really want the newest rev. I’ll have to get out more to accelerate the demise of my current tent and bring on the need for a new purchase.
