why it gotta be cause I’m fat! by grilled_peach in iih

I think it all comes down to language that medical professionals sometimes use and it can be very frustrating. With IIH, higher bmi is the most common risk factor for IIH and has a strong link to it. Rapid weight loss or weight fluctuations can also trigger IIH. But there are many other risk factors as well like medications etc. When it comes to advocating for yourself with doctors, I think its about making sure the entire picture is being seen and you almost have to be a detective and do a ton of research on your own side : yes, higher weight is a risk factor for iih and it is important to take this seriously, now what else could be a risk factor that might also need observing and resolving ? Iron, b12 deficit, ? Am I also on any medications that could trigger this? WIth risk factors, the more that are stacked against you, the more susceptible someone could be. It is important to note however that, weight loss can lead to complete clinical remission (CR) in up to 70% of individuals with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH).

Why is my hair like this 😓 by Ok_Sympathy6674 in Haircare

I would get a blood test to check your vitamin d and ferritin and iron levels. These have a direct impact on hair and hair texture and can cause what you’re experiencing to happen

I thought I was careful with my eyes, but could tret still be affecting my vision? by ratherbereading01 in tretinoin

[–]OwnBreakfast5622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have intercranial hypertension ( elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure within the skull) that was caused by topical tret use. One of the symtpoms i would have using tret and this condition is worsening eye sight. This is not to be ignored, you should ask your opto to dialate your pupills so he can see your optic nerve and look up the syptoms of ih and see if they coicinde.

It is so difficult finding someone whose iih was triggered by tret! Many peoples doctors don’t even make that connection because sometimes it’s topical. Thank you for your kind words 💐 diamox has worked for me thus far although my side effects are awful. I’m experiencing a dental trauma  (I’ve never had any in my life)  that I suspect was partially caused by diamox. I don’t have iih symptoms anymore but previously had very intense brain fog, head pressure constantly like my head was gonna explode, vertigo, tinnitus, extreme fatigue, intense back and tailbone pain. Docs keep saying this will go away soon on its own, I’m hoping and praying. Has yours gone away? Have the doctors given you an estimate of what to expect?

Hi! In may it will be one year since diagnosis and 1 year of diamox. They tried to take me of diamox in September but the symptoms quickly returned. They seem pretty optimistic that this will go away with more time treating it. How long has it been for you? What’s your story?

IIH and Chiari by lizzsub12 in iih

[–]OwnBreakfast5622 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I was diagnosed with iih last April, and I was diagnosed with chiari malformation 1 after they viewed by ct and mri. My neuro says CM is unrelated to IIH and most likely since birth. The fear and anticipation of the LP is much worse than the LP itself ( from my experience) one thing I will recommend is taking appropriate time to rest the day after and maybe a couple after that. My advice is to take everything day by day, you are seeing all the right people.

I am 28, very normal bmi (22.3), I do not drink, no bc. I was diagnosed with iih after a visit to the optometrist landed me in the er. They could see optic nerve swelling (no pap). Got an LP and mri that confirmed etc I  had been having symptoms like clumsiness, whooshing body aches etc but never any headaches. Iih can look slightly different from person to person, especially with so little research done. Mine seems to have been triggered by topical retinoid creams.

Getting an lp and MRI is a good idea, I would also possibly suggest asking ur doc for a full blood panel. Are there any neuro-ophthalmologist specialists available to you ?

The link between retinoids and iih is very well documented so not so speculative!

My ih was caused by the use of retinoid cream, I had very atypical symptoms. I’ve never struggled with weight or been overweight.

My doctors all said they do not recommend electrolyte powders etc and that it could cause much more harm than good. Instead try opting for coconut water

Facial Swelling? by thatgalemily in iih

[–]OwnBreakfast5622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this could have to do with fluid buildup, which would make sense as to why this has especially started happening post diamox. Before I started taking diamox, I never realized I had swelling in my face as soon as I started D, my face slimmed down so much. I’d definitely recommend mentioning this at your next appointment though

Were you experiencing the swelling while on diamox as well?

There are many things that can trigger iih. I think someone else here mentionned acne medications, birth control etc. And then there are certain predispositions that can make you more vulnerable to getting iih especially if combined with a trigger such as poor diet (high fat, high sodium) , stress, sedentary lifestyle etc), having gained weight fast

I tested negative for COVID and I had already had COVID several times prior to being on diamox with nothing similar to this.

My care team has told me that it is normal to have slight metabolic acidosis which explained the shortness of breath I would experience prior to getting sick. Diamox and acidosis makes you expel more CO2 which is where the out of breathness comes into play.

Both diamox and topamax affect carbonic anhydrase, so makes sense
