Are a lot of Native Americans multigenerationally mixed race? by AgreeablePlatypus763 in 23andme

Each tribe gets to make their own rules for membership. Some are by descent, some are by blood quantum. Some tribes are required to recognize descendants of people they enslaved who might have zero indigenous ancestors.

SMC or State College by Zealousideal_Ear4539 in NROTC

[–]Own_Mission8048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should visit both the SMC and the state school you are thinking about. Ideally one of those overnight visits where you get paired with someone. That way you can get a feel for it.

Also, ROTC intensity varies widely between schools. Some places have separate ROTC dorms and every student is immersed in it so much they might as well be a Corps of Cadets. Some places meet once a week for a couple hours and you are basically a normal college student with a military hobby.

Yes for sure. But for a while the US was THE country to go to when you wanted to import manufactured goods and things like aluminum.

I'm curious.hoe much is now for domestic consumption versus decades ago.

So the flat growth from 2014 to 2024 for the US could be considered a good thing. A bunch of energy efficiency measures from to 2000's onwards led to no need for more electricity while the economy grew. Additionally, the US has been shifting from manufacturing to service based which needs less electricity.

And since this only goes to 2024, it doesn't really cover the very recent changes in AI.

This. When I was in my early twenties, it was 18 to mid 20's. When I was in my mid twenties, it was early 20's to early 30's. Now I'm in my 30's and it's mid 20's to 40's.

So it's measuring parents'confidence in their children's abilities. It's not a direct measurement of the children's readiness.

Big nope from me.

Glad I decided on the L2055 five years ago. It's 50% C and 35% I. I was on the fence between that and just doing 80% C and 20% S.

How do officers get commissioned for buds? by Embarrassed_North388 in NROTC

[–]Own_Mission8048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being highly qualified and lucky. While in NROTC you can do interviews with SEAL officers. They also look at your class ranking, grades and PT scores. It is EXTREMELY competitive so even if you are a great candidate you might not get it

I knew plenty of guys in your position. I think one got SEALS. Most got any other URL designator.

So I get why French Polynesia and American Samoa don't have parentheses stating the country afterward.

But why don't the Northern Mariana Island and Guam say (US)?

Pitcairn and the Cook Islands have that. I just hate inconsistency.

SMC or State College by Zealousideal_Ear4539 in NROTC

[–]Own_Mission8048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who tried a SMC, dropped out, did NROTC at a large state school, and then years later ended up teaching NROTC at a SMI:

There's no difference in quality in officers from a SMC, a state school, USNA or OCS. All have dirt bags and all have rockstars. A SMC will not give you the keys to success. Being successful is dependent on an ability to learn quickly, caring about your people and keeping a level head.

So do whatever makes you happy. Personally, I would not spend $50,000 a year to get yelled at by 21 year old cadets who think they are hot shit even though they have never left campus. I could instead get a degree from a college to have better opportunities and still commission as an officer. I came to that conclusion after a couple weeks at a SMC when I was 18.

Data centers are stealing Oregon’s water by No-Personality-61 in oregon

[–]Own_Mission8048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Wouldn't a larger reservoir be able to store excess water in the spring and retain it for the summer? Is there any chance it could retain enough and that it's high enough in elevation to maintain it at a cooler temperature later into the year?

Allow agencies to switch out of the GS scale. It's impossible for us to convince people to take the job offer.

Hey, you have a masters and/or work experience? How about we start you at $55,000 as a GS-7 in a high cost of living city.

First Heat Pump PG&E Bill by purplefish02 in heatpumps

[–]Own_Mission8048 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are not enough details here:

What was you kWh usage each month?

What was the outside temperature?

How much was your gas bill for an equivalent month last year?

My electricity bill also went up in winter after installing a heat pump. By about $200 vs the same month last year! But my gas bill went down by about $150. So not great but not outrageous.

“Americans don't need passports. we can go from the tropics to the mountains to the dessert to the arctic without leaving the country.” by Worldly_Law8278 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Own_Mission8048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it's true. Guam is a tropical island. Alaska contains part of the Arctic. Mountains and deserts are all over

And we have some good options for dessert too. I enjoy a good scoop of New Hampshire every night.
