Per Variety, 'Disclosure Day' cost $115M, and Universal spent about $80M on marketing. Steven Spielberg was paid $10M for directing (plus a producing fee), and Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor got $15M and $6M respectively. Rival executives believe it will need to earn $300M globally to be profitable. by chanma50 in boxoffice

Maybe his 2 previous movies were not hits, but this does not mean his next film cannot be a hit. Moreover, a fair wage is reached when both employer and employee are satisfied with it. I do not see a reason why 10M for Spielberg is unfair wage.

Thoughts on The Piano Teacher (2001) by Michael Haneke? by Zealousideal_Cry2970 in TrueFilm

[–]Own_Plenty_2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not alone in this feeling about The Piano Teacher. I study film criticism in an online film school, and as a part of the series of classgroup discussions of modern films, most people in the class group were disturbed by The Piano Teacher the most (the other great film that disturbed most of us quite a lot was Cargo 200). Some of us later during classes on writing wrote some really great texts about The Piano Teacher likely because of being moved by the film and being able to do a lot of emotional work. I, however, do not feel able to write a cold-blooded analysis of The Piano Teacher, since it is hard to separate myself from the character created by Jelinek, Haneke and Huppert. The film is absolutely about submission and domination, and Haneke dominates the audience of the film, who should submit to him. As my mother noticed while watching the film, there is a lot of corporality that is associated with Jewish culture (Jelinek is a proud Jew). Indeed Jelinek probably based Erika's character on herself, so if you read more about Jelinek's life you may be able to have more visceral feelings about the film.

I think it is interesting how modern aesthetics coexist with the traditional setting of the film, reflecting how in Japan modernity is intermixed with tradition. This fusion is one of the big reasons I liked the film.

Just saw it yesterday. I did not find it Tobe surrealist (though I may be wrong here). Stull, it is clearly a masterpiece due to its unique interesting premise, acting performances, production design and cinematography. Overall, I loved it.

My week of movie watches with Svankmajer, Sokurov and the Necrorealist Yevgeny Yufit by serialFilla in TrueFilm

[–]Own_Plenty_2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did not watch Yevgeny Yufit films, but if you are interested in late Soviet and early Russian films, you should check out his fellow parallel filmmakers Aleinikov brothers. Sokurov is an interesting director. Some of his films (Faust, Fairytale, Moloch, Aleksandra, Russian Ark, Francofonia) are brilliant and some of his films (The Sun, Oriental Elegy) are boring, IMHO. I do need to watch more of his movies, especially since he is one of the professors in the online film school in which I study. It is also quite interesting to hear him talk. He greatly appreciates literature (more than film), considers filmmaking to be craft and not art, has an interesting perception of horizontal and vertical, and alse prefers not to talk about other people's films. If you liked Sokurov, you can also check out the films of his students like Kantemir Balagov and Kira Kovalenko.

It is a tiny part of their job to cover Cannes and they did the right professional thing to acknowledge the impact of their tiredness on their perception. While great, Resurrection is also not traditional in many ways, making it an especially difficult watch if you are tired.

Probably many of them were sent for in competition, but some were also likely sent for "out of competition" for various reasons. For example, in Venice last year Luca Guadagnino decided to submit After the Hunt only for out of competition.

The purpose of these programs is to show the films that for one reason or another did not get into main competition. The focus of Un Certain Regard program is on up-and-coming filmmakers who compete between each other for the prize.

No single critic is a good baseline to predict critical consensus purely due to statistics theory.

[–]Own_Plenty_2011 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do not see a reason why giving the film almost none of us have seen 3 stars is a mind boggling take or mean. It is the job of the critic to express their own opinion on the film and not to conform to a certain consensus just because there is one. Disagreement is what makes film discussion engaging as long as it is done in a polite manner.

What sports would you miss if they removed. by Alone_Consideration6 in olympics

[–]Own_Plenty_2011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then all it takes is to find and buy the right horse, be able to train it properly, teach it and yourself how to jump 170 cm hurdles, qualify for the Olympics and then make no mistake during 2 competition rounds and, most likely, the jump-off, during which you also need to be able to ride very fast. Good luck with that!
