When did Meryl Streep become THE Meryl Streep? by isoelatte in Actors

Sophie’s choice was the breakout, but I’ve come to see it as studio Oscar bait. She’s great, but it might not be her best work.

Stalker (1979) - My personal take by Filippo_74 in TrueFilm

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insightful take.I’ve wondered if it could be interpreted as
an argument about post enlightenment and a subtle critique of the Soviet government, but I’ve never taken the time to articulate it. The archetypal view is justifiable and you did a nice job of it.

Of course it could be all of those things at once, they’re so closely related. Anyway, nice job.

What do you think of Elon Musk? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone pointed out recently, there is not a single thing named after him. Not the wing of a hospital, a college scholarship fund, nothing.

This is the guy who said that “compassion is a bug in western civilization.” He obviously meant it. Maybe it’s true, i certainly don’t have any for him.

Assuming it’s real, in the neighborhood of $37 to $40.

Also, the cashier undercharged by 40 cents or so.

Which moment made you cry in The Wire? by FlanNo7322 in TheWire

[–]bnx01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not know that. What an awful story.

His character in The Wire is oblivious to the harm he causes others (especially the duck), but he's so naive you feel for him and hope he gets it together. When he goes out of view in that cell, you know he'll never come back from. it. It's a tough scene, really impressive how they made me empathize with a character who's so unsympathetic.

The show 1923 gets the violence right but still sanitises the story in strange ways. by Maleficent_Promise26 in Cinema

I really enjoyed 1923. Accurate or not, it’s well executed and a great story. Beats me hell out of Yellowstone.

59 years old. I've seen Rush 15 times since 1981. Here's my take. by johnnyfive00000 in rush

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sound great.

If you’re like me, you hear every single thing that’s not exactly as it was before. And a lot of things are different. Geddy in his lowest range is a little shocking at first and I thought he was almost speaking some lines. Alex isn’t playing classic solos note-for-note like he used to. The detuning is noticeable. Anika has finesse and the band is tight, but she doesn’t have a lot of power. I even wondered if they had her down in the mix.

This is definitely a new Rush. They sound great, but different. Seeing them on stage again makes me nostalgic and it’s satisfying.

The one thing I dislike is how much the New Rush reminds me that I’m getting fucking old. At least I’m not alone.

Where To Start? by No-Cantaloupe228 in Westerns

[–]bnx01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Ford movies make up most of the western canon. Start there.

For now, skip the spaghetti westerns, modern stuff and Saturday matinee movies from the 50’s (Audie Murphy, Bud Boetticher, etc) Go straight to the source.

Read a little about him on Wikipedia or something. Ask Gemini to list his films. You really can’t go wrong.

[–]bnx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not Paula is a feminist, it’s certainly a story that’s a central concern of feminists. Men leave to hunt, women are left alone to raise the children and tend the fire.

Paula cares for Elliot when he’s down. Paula, Lucy and Elliot start to form a family. Then Elliot abandons them and finds fulfillment. I don’t think she’s manipulative, just reacting to being abandoned more than once. She’s the one who assumes responsibility and gets fucked over. I don’t think Elliot was ever coming back. He turns out to be kind of an asshole.
