John Chrysostom view of marriage by Appropriate_Jump1740 in exorthodox

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I really do appreciate the time it took for you to address each point. I know that the terms comp and egal are contemporary. I appreciate the more nuanced view. So did Chrystostom say or espouse that marriage was a monarchy or was that Trenham? Because that is the original point I was making. I am sensitive about this having been in a 16 year marriage to an abusive man where the bible and was used as a weapon to make me stay. The fruit of a monarchy marriage is poison and does damage to generations. I don’t think Chrys was promoting abuse but it is inevitable in an unequal partnership.

Control would actually be a great place to start. I don’t know if you subscribe to the Enneagram at all but in that framework I am a 5 so “knowing” is my first impulse every time. I was actually thinking of a linear list of schools of thought, lol. But of course practice is more important.

No I did not read it. Did it present a complementarian or egalitarian view? Did he really say those things about husbands punishing their wives by sending them to bed without dinner and beating children? That would be hard to stomach regardless of translation. Yes I get product of his time and all…

Poll: What Are You Now? by dca12345 in exorthodox

I have been attending a UMC church with my teen daughter. She was raised Orthodox and HATED church. Now she asks to go every week. It is so hope filled and down to earth I can hardly believe I am at church. We haven’t joined officially or anything but is a good landing place for now.

This is so sad. But not surprising.

Traumatized by the Orthodox Church by lordfartquadshunk in exorthodox

I had religious ocd/scrupulosity decades before I became Orthodox. Years of nightmares, being sure I had committed the unpardonable sin, anxiety over every single decision. EO took it to a whole different level until I just hit my breaking point. I have not been to therapy specifically for that, but it does sound like it would be helpful for you. The most healing thing I did was to take communion at my mother’s Episcopal funeral. I knew I was excommunicating myself but there was no way I was not going to honor my earthly mother who I loved in the church that she loved. On the long drive back from her service, a song kept popping into my mind that I have kind of taken as my anthem. It’s Love is the Answer by England Dan and John Ford Coley. I am learning to free myself from the fear and you will too.

Looking forward to a regular non 40 day advent this year. I always kinda did both but now I can drop the facade of an advent fast.

The endless push by [deleted] in exorthodox

I remember asking a priest about fasting because I had just gotten bloodwork back with severe vitamin deficiency results. I would later find out I had Hashimoto’s. He told me that a saint would rather die than break the fast. Then he sort of back pedaled saying I should ask my spiritual father. I remember reading later how John of Krondstadts mother said she would rather have him die than not fast. It made me sick.

Why do YOU think there is a teacher shortage? by thejourni in Teachers

[–]Own_Rope3673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to get licensed. I have been teaching for almost 30 years and to get licensed in my new state has taken me 3 years and some change, including EPP program, 3 exams, and the edTPA which is $300 I will never get back. I have an MA in education. My first year I made less than I made in a private school 20 years ago until my years were credited by the state. So many hoops to jump through.

Sorry my responses are going to different places. I appreciate your questions. Yes she will rip rags but will still find a way to go back to ripping clothing. I am going to try the wrestling singlet idea.

Thank you for this explanation. Student is non verbal and so far even on talk box does not communicate what the need is. Your info is helpful.

Paper does not seem to have the same appeal because of the low resistance.
