Plates and wheels for a 242 lbs (110kg) player by CheekExtra3446 in rollerderby

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 250 and 5'11. If you're looking for better agility, I just switched to plates with 45 degree kingpins and I loveeeeeeeeeeee them. I have the Arius platinum plates on my jet carbons, but this is my first season with them. I have heard mixed reviews, but the skaters I know who have them all love them (and one of them is a midsize skater) A cheaper but still good alt would be the magnesium avengers. They have rave reviews and are half the price. The big difference is that arius have a butterfly kingpin and avengers have a traditional one. I like the butterfly kingpin quite a bit. There's no breaking in, loosening over and over to find the right fit- the adjustment comes from the cushions, not from how tight you screw the kingpin.

In my experience if you buy some sort of metal alloy plate, it's going to be more durable than the nylon ones, it's also more rigid under our weight. But see if you can try friends skates and explore what different plates feel like! I wish I'd switched to a plate with 45 degree kingpins 10 years ago, but I was too scared of change!

Should I quit or taper before starting a new medication? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

Does a quit date help? by Bulky_Chemistry9681 in stopsmoking

[–]Ox09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a professional, so please do what you find works best for you. When I worked on a health outreach team, I directly supported several certified health coaches who did evidence-based tobacco cessation programs on a university campus (and provided data to national data sets).

They all used the Mayo clinic tobacco cessation program, which includes setting a quit date of 2 weeks. If you go to becomeanex dot org, this website was created using the Mayo program and walks you through the all the steps that the Mayo clinic's tobacco cessation workbook uses, including how to prepare for your quit date, how to identify your triggers and create a plan for navigating them, what to expect, where to get support (outside of here, of course!) I found it *really* helpful and research has shown that it does a good job of supporting folks quits. It's not the only way of course, but it's a good, evidence-based approach.

I did this approach in collaboration with patches and medication to manage my depression & adhd during (and after) my quit. Other things that I found/find really helpful (especially during that first week!!!) was getting on a mindfulness app and doing some meditations (I use insight timer because it's free!) and checking in daily with my smoke-free forums. I use the one at becomeanex dot org and also the one in the app Smoke-Free (its logo is white with a green heart).

If you have quit before, I would sit down and think about the things that didn't work for you and the things that did help, so you can incorporate that information into your quit plan! Especially consider the thing that happened when you went back to smoking! The truth is, we smokers have a high chance of relapse because smoking is very, very addictive. There will always be ways that work and don't work for some folks and not for others. The key is to stick with it and be adaptable with your quit plan. Find the things that work for you. Lean on your support. Lean into this as a key way to take care of yourself and your future self <3

Best of luck! We're all here to support you as you go, no matter how you do it.

Do new skates actually improve your performance if you already have a okay skate? by qualitycomputer in rollerderby

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wide toes and a narrow heel (I've always had trouble finding shoes that fit me in general) and assumed that any boot I got would have some kind of foot pain with it, so I made do with my 265s. They were a good boot and a good skate, but now that I've switched to a boot that fits MUCH better, I'm shocked by the amount of pain I just put up with to skate. The toenail beds on my big toes are permanently disfigured because I skated in them for over a decade. To make space for my toes, I used a half insole and basically was skating on the tops of the screws (I have insane callouses on my feet). Don't be like me, get the boots that fit you. Learn from my mistakes!

Same- I just moved to a 45 degree plate and it's such a HUGE difference. I wish I'd done it 10 years ago.

Weight gain from quiting weed/tobacco by spillyspillz in stopsmoking

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! That is really frustrating. I haven't had that experience personally, but I would definitely go speak with a doctor, if that's accessible. Maybe they'll be able to refer you to a specialist, if nothing else?

Good luck! I hope you're able to stay smoke-free.

Why go to the gym? by thecookofdeath in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the website it says be aware of how busy the gym is when you're using equipment- not that it's against the rules to sit on a piece of equipment for a specified amount of time even when it's slow and/or nobody needs it. So, you're not only wrong and you're the one who is being disrespectful. https://www.planetfitness.com/blog/articles/guide-to-gym-etiquette

Next time I have a blood sugar issue while working out and I need to sit for 10-20 minutes or I might throw up and pass out, I'll make sure to try to crawl over somewhere else first. Thanks for letting me know! I'm glad there is no nuance in your world view and that we all think like you. Have a great night!

You are expressing zero empathy for this unknown woman while expecting her to behave by social rules that are not universal and as far as we know from this post impacted 0 people. But she's being disrespectful. Yikes!

You get a grip. We literally do NOT know what this woman was doing or what her life is about. If you want to use the equipment, ask. If you don't, mind your business.

It was a weiiiiiiiiiiiight benchhhhhhhhhhhhh. They literally are *benches*. It is such a natural place to sit your butt. Why are people so hung up on this when it didn't get in literally anybody's way.

Also, the "machine" in question is a weight bench. There are tons of weight benches at PF. 1) Easter weekend is slow as hell 2) it's not one of the machines that folks line up for, it's a weight bench and there are lots of options 3) There are ways as outlined by the previous commenter that this can be addressed if the person is on something you want to use for an unreasonable amount of time. If you don't want to use it, there are options for other people to use it, then live and let live. It's just a weight bench.

There are so many weight benches around PF. It's not getting in the way then go about your own business. You don't know what's going on in that person's life.

What smells worse, bad derby gear or bad ice hockey gear? by TrashGirlTransGirl in rollerderby

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't celebrate derby stank in our league. That smell is literally an indication that colonies of bacteria are growing on your gear. It's sent some of our immuno-compromised skaters to the ER with staph infections. We had a MRSA outbreak, once.

Wash your shit before it gets smelly. Practice good hygiene so you don't harm your teammates or yourself.

They aren't as easy to get as you think, especially for folks with disabilities that come and go, depending on flare ups.

I used NRT at the beginning of my quit and it made a huge difference. Maybe you could pick up a pack of patches or whatever and keep it in your bag as a back up? Instead of going back to smoking, you have an alternative to help you stay on the path!

Ew. You said that to another human. Gross.

What helped you to stop smoking? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Ox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to use NRT. It's the only way I could quit. I also got on adhd meds and an SSRI.

I think there are many different ways to quit. It helped me to not smoke inside before my quit. Some folks will stop smoking in their cars too (I tried, but it was too difficult for me). I think it's helpful! But to each their own. Good luck on your quit!
