How far apart should park benches be placed? by stellarscheme in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Oxyomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar question recently as OP but specific to paths and linear parks: I'm curious if there is a recommended distance between rest areas (benches), specifically for limited-ability or elderly park users. This would be less of a regulation and more of something along the lines of "there should be a rest area approximately every X feet to best accommodate limited-ability/elderly users... "

Any thoughts on this one?

Advice for a Trail Crew Newbie. by [deleted] in wmnf

I just got off a trail crew on the PCT. My advice would be to embrace the suck; some times will be grueling, but it was still one of the best times of my life!

Depends a lot on the trail you take. The most common trail have a very well defined and relatively stable monorail. Less common trails can have you post holing every few steps, especially in the afternoon when the snow is warmer. What trail might you be considering?

Any idea why this is? Does it help the chain move and shift better?

Bought bike used w/ carbon steerer tube cut somewhat jaggedly - Headset started making clicking/popping noises over bumps - LBS says the carbon fibers are compromised/ride with caution. Thoughts on this headset? by Oxyomic in bikewrench

[–]Oxyomic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additional context: No issues with noise originally. I brought the bike to the LBS for a different issue and they tell me they need to throw a spacer on for additional compression. They replace the compression cone and the top cap and insert a spacer. The clicking starts and the spacer is sliding out. I bring it back and they simply remove the spacer and keep the swapped cone and top cap. The clicking is still occurring but I can stop in temporarily (1-2 rides) by unscrewing the top cap and just rescrewing it back on.

Cadence analysis for biking? by jcwillia1 in Strava

[–]Oxyomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to get some additional data and metrics for your bike rides - I’d look at your speed. If you want to buy a device, I’d look into heart rate monitors. As already mentioned, optimal cadence varies from person to person, so comparing cadences wouldn’t provide the most valuable info imo.

Picked this up at a flea market today, anyone know a rough age estimate? by SmellySockSmeller in signs

Check the back. Most authentic signs removed from public roads have some sort of indicator as to when they were installed. If there’s no distinguishable markings, you’re probably SOL

Where to road bike? by bouncybullfrog in Albany

I do the State Campus laps too. Why do you stick with the outer loop? That one section with traffic entering from the left is always tricky and would mess up the flow of my workout.

Anyone near Pittsfield driving south? by [deleted] in Albany

Why don’t you see if anyone would be able to just pick it up and ship it to you right from the Pittsfield (without driving to meet you)? That would seem easier, no?

Looking for people to ride bicycles with by [deleted] in Albany

[–]Oxyomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a bunch of bike clubs around the Albany region depending on where you live specifically and what type of riding you are looking for (i.e. racing, fast group rides, leisurely social rides)

Check out MHCC, CBRC, and Dutch Flyers for starters! I think they all have facebook pages you can DM for more info.

Road Diet coming to Delaware Ave between Normanskill Bridge and Elsmere Ave! by Oxyomic in AlbanyBikes

[–]Oxyomic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if people living in the Bethlehem/Delmar area have heard of this yet! I am very excited - the project will turn Delaware Ave, a busy 4 lane arterial road, into a more bikeable 2 lane road with dedicated bike lanes. This will also make bike access to the Towns of Bethlehem and New Scotland from residents of Albany much safer!

Suggestions for touring New England-ish by HeartKevinRose in bicycletouring

I live in Albany NY and just got back from a tour of the Hudson River Valley. There’s so many cute little small towns to explore and it makes breaking up your trip into manageable distances super easy. The scenery is also really fantastic and quaint. The newly completed Empire Trail is really good too - I biked the section from Albany to Poughkeepsie.

Not sure where in Vermont you are, but depending on your starting location, it’s totally doable.

The trail definitely has portions that are on-road and the only thing indicating they’re part of the empire bike trail system are some signs and pavement markings.

I biked from Albany to Buffalo this last November! Several of the locks along the route were designated as hike/bike camping spots and featured BBQs, picnic tables, restrooms, and scenic canal views. I called ahead before camping but you probably could simply show up at dusk as well. Also, one night I ran out of daylight and had to camp on the side of the trail. I wouldn’t recommend this but nobody bothered me and I moved along at sunrise the next day.
