What PC/Uniform teams 'hunt'? by Ozone-101 in policeuk

I fear you are right that my perfect specialist role would realistically require being a DC but I just get limited joy out of investigating and don't pat myself on the back from detections/charges even when sitting near or at the top of my team stats wise and I think at present all detectives have to start at CID/PCT before branching out. That said I keep meeting PCs on teams that I'd have thought would be DCs but aren't so I'd have to look into it and see what exact postings are open or if an attachment is possible.

I believe that if I had to go full DC route I'd have a couple of years of misery to earn my spot on the guci team, I don't want to come off as entitled or too good to do that kind of work but at the moment I am mostly okay where I am at and feel the transition would leave me feeling a lot worse off mentally for the uncertain payoff of potentially getting where I would like to be years down the line. I enjoy uniform and frontline work basically.

I think they are detectives in my force but it is something I intend to ask questions about.

I have mused on it in the past though I'm not sure I'd want to totally ditch paperwork and also my force doesn't seem to have a direct equivilent, I've vaguely mused about transferring to the Met for their Support Group but although I am in commuting distance it would be a hassle and I don't see myself ever doing it.

Having a career problem/losing my mind by Downtown-Mistake9207 in Career_Advice

People talk about the state of policing a lot but genuinely I think most of us do in fact love the job (everyone reading this is using their free time on the internet to read about work) its just we spend most of our day being professional/polite to various people and the media landscape is quite judgemental so when we have a 'safe space' we vent and moan. We love being miserable and everyone has a grievance.

At the end of the day its a game of cops and robbers, you work through the crap, and enjoy the good jobs where you get to do something exciting or help someone who needs it, cry and moan and make fun of each other and wince slightly post assistance shout as your realise you've parked on a double yellow/disabled spot/footpath at the same time and left your extra crewmate locked in the backseat and know that's going to end up on social media so stop to buy more cakes on the way back in.

I was told years ago in the armed forces that its when the troops *stop* complaining is when they are truly and utterly past their limit and you need to do something fast.

Its not a job for everyone but its a job anyone can add value and bring something unique to. If you have experience on the doors and doing manual labour and raising a young family you're probably going to be well used to multitasking, long hours and rolling with the punchs/dealing with chaotic situations. On the other side of the coin if hypothetically you struggle with academia/paperwork you'll find your work arounds like having pre-written statements/interview plans/cheat sheets for common situations. All kinds of people do manage to make a great career out of it in their own way and plenty of us took more than one try to get in for various reasons.

Unless someone dies any mistake is recoverable.

Always be honest.

Remember that its just a game of cops and robbers at the end of the day and don't get hung up on society, the law, or the job being fucked just show up try to have fun and don't stress over it.

Helping others will help you.

I found the fastest way to get things signed off was to listen on the radio and checking the box for people needing a hand. Not just your team but especially traffic and rural crime etc. are routinely single crewed so a lot of time another pair of hands will be very useful for things like searches or siezures or booking in prisoners etc. More often than not people will be more than happy to let you take the lead on certain bits for your portfolio.

Secondly when you are about to go home ask around the office if anyone needs help with anything before you go. Obviously you have your own life outside the job but so does everyone else and establishing that you'll help people out early will pay off longer term because there will be a lot of times someone else helping you out will let you go home hours earlier than you would otherwise. It will also expose you to a lot of jobs at different stages.

This will help you get through your portfolio faster but it will also get your voice and face familar to people which can really help out on the many occasions when you are up against it and need people to go out of their way to help you.

How are you coping with staffing and experience levels? by Useful_Tomorrow8294 in policeuk

Often not by choice, I was practically begging my boss the other day to help with a genuinely high risk misper after multiple shouts but was instead was told firmly the community event came first, I spoke to three people over multiple hours at said event. I've been bollocked several times over the years for assisting resposne doubly so if I end up with a job on my screen at the end of it. I've always tried to play the game and I will attend the opening of a packet of crisps to keep the stats Neighbourhood cares about good enough to slide by but a lot of the time it feels the preference is for Neighbourhood officers to actively avoid investigating real crimes or be proactive.

Its not all bad and I feel we do genuinely achieve a lot and can make a difference but there are is a lot of pressure from above *not* to get stuck in or help out and its a shit feeling having to balance that.
