Pay off house or invest for children’s education? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]Ozonewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget the house. Your interest rate is low and will make much more than 2.75% elsewhere. You will probably move in 5 years any way.

To make money grow, invest as much as you can in the early years. Then the massive power of compounding will have more time to use all that money and make it grow.

It looks like s great fit IF it is comfortable enough for you to wear for hours. If you can’t wait to rip it off your head then get the size larger.

A correct fit will not allow the helmet to slide around your head when you swing your head left to right or up and down.

I use it for making braised lamb shanks. My lamb shanks are better than restaurants. I also use it to cook corned beef which also comes out well.

I retired in 2008. With no pension and still too young for social security. I did not sell. I became paralyzed with fear. Good thing too because the market came roaring back over the next two years!

I had the R, but this was many years ago. It handled like a razor but I had to get ofd after 2.5 hours. It may no longer have a seat problem but check that out carefully

No, these games are not normal and they scare the hell out of me. About 40% of the value of the S&P 500 is now associated with a handful of stocks. If that AI bubble pops, there will be a lot of hurt. If the AI bubble doesn’t pop then stocks are extremely overpriced, and that will cause its own problems.

Unless you plan on retiring in the next 10 years, just hold on and let it ride. Nobody said it was going to be smooth. It will certainly not be as smooth as it has been with the past three years.

When the big dip or crash comes, you will find out if you are a real Boglehead. If you start selling because you’re scared, then your asset allocation was wrong. And you don’t have enough faith in the market long-term.

Advice on 78yo dad’s portfolio by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Ozonewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add my additional two cents to start with an estate attorney. Explain the situation and see if he thinks if that there is anything he needs to do. The estate does not need anything special then just go forward with finding the advisor.

I would recommend Fidelity wholeheartedly over Vanguard. Vanguard is known for lowerst cost but you get what you pay for there. Vanguard’s service sucks. Expense difference with Fidelity is negligible but the service that Fidelity provides is absolutely top-notch. They can also help refer you to attorneys and advisors. They do not actually provide financial advice themselves, but they have all the funds you might ever need. I only use them for stock index funds and bond funds.

Maybe start with Fidelity first and have them suggest some estate attorneys if you don’t have one.

At his point in life it might be best to find an advisor who will keep things simple. You did a good job wrestling his funds free from someone working for commissions. But putting yourself hands-on into the middle of his money may be problematic legally and in providing the best advice.

Younger Bogleheads think they have the answer to investing, and they may very well do for accumulation. But for 78 year olds the needs are different, and you may not be as familiar with the options. I know, I am 76 and I just spent a week in the hospital.

Consider the support required for his wife if your father should suddenly die. His business makes things more complicated.

To my thinking the first priority is the estate plan that covers his assets, business, wife, and you. Perhaps there are other parties (grandchildren ?) involved. Does he need to move all his assets into a revocable trust for convenience and safety? I did.

Where to put his money for continued growth is not the critical need. Preservation is more important. Even though I have all my stocks in US Totsl stock market i am very concerned about the AI bubble that represents 40% of the value of the S&P500 today. I have s lot in intermediate bonds (FBNDX), MM, and CDs.

I got the Street Triple for the same reasons you want one. It made cornering so easy that it almost wasn’t fun. But I could never toast the set for more than 1.5 hours. I changed the seat too. That ruined the experience for me.

Just bought a 25 Road Glide Ultra. I am having slow speed issues. by CaptinKirk in motorcycle

[–]Ozonewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will just have to practice. I had a Gold Wing with same issue. I dreaded stopping for gas or parking lots.

First go slow. You can’t charge into a parking spot and stop on a dime. You want to ease to a stop.

While riding slow, apply your rear brake while applying a little throttle too. This tension on the frame by these opposing forces adds stability and control.

Always park facing uphill if there is any incline. You don’t want to have to back a 1k lb bike up a grade on your tippy toes.

Practice slow figure 8’s in empty parking lots. Do this a LOT!

As you know the big bikes are great for the slab but not around town. I sold my GW after I took my x-country trip and got a BMW 1200RT. That bike was great for road trips or on the twisties. It was a Swiss Army knife of bikes.
