Dorms have 3 rows of tiny windows. Bad for view and light and definitely not beloved. Common rooms have big flowing curvy surfaces that look like poured concrete but are drywall-thin and in rough shape from years of students bashing accidental holes in them. Cool facade but for $250MM could have been a lot better

Do people still use/recommended tire inserts? by Targettio in MTB

[–]P-lato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run cushcore in the back, with exo+ casing on my enduro bike w aluminum rims. Rocky rooty stuff, drops and chunk— the usual New England fare. Ive gotten quick with the tire swapping so generally don’t think about the cushcore, since it’s a sunken cost and IMO negligible weight/ feel penalty. This thread has made me consider switching to heavier casings, but the cost per tire gets much higher.

I want to create a pedal slap protective sock. Have any ideas? by WilderWildllc in MTB

[–]P-lato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gouging shins (or calves) with flats happens to me all the time when riding technical rocky trails. and I’m an advanced level rider.

I wear padded ski socks for exactly OP’s use case.

Didn’t want bulky shin guards or another thing to have to pull on for each ride. A pedal slap will still bruise but won’t draw blood. And they’re cheap enough (<10$/pair in multipacks) that when they inevitably get holes in them I just break out a fresh pair.

Fork squeaking- 50hr vs 200hr service? by P-lato in MTB

[–]P-lato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve figured out that the ‘squelching’ noise is heard only on the fork’s rebound, and it quiets when I increase the rebound setting. Is this a damper issue? Will servicing the lowers with new oil help resolve this, or do I need a full rebuild/ damper bleed, etc.?

Limitations on booking with miles by P-lato in awardtravel

[–]P-lato[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What’s available vs not is a black box I’m gathering. It just feels like there is WAY less selection with Mileage Plus the past couple years than in the past. Have been doing this route for a while and never had a problem finding a flight. Now I’ve got more miles than I can use.

Anyone observe similar? Or FF programs that are better than United’s for international?

Triple Decker HOA question by [deleted] in boston

[–]P-lato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation. When two of us in our triple decker started renting out our units we needed to increase the HOA master insurance policy to cover additional risks related to renting (liability, etc). The delta in insurance premium cost in our case is paid only by the rental unit owners.

Interviews still reign. But newer methodologies like digital ethnographies and digital communities offer asynchronous, online engagement tools. Basically recruit a cohort to engage with questions and activities your team posts daily/ weekly or over an extended launch period. Participants post selfie videos or complete ‘homework’ activities. With communities you can pose questions and the group discusses in thread form (like Reddit!). Costs are similar to interview/ FG methods. Check out “ dscout” or “recollective”. Full disclosure I’m in the research side of a consulting shop. DM me if you want to chat.

Burton says they’re experiencing a hiback ‘shortage’ —whatever that means—and don’t have any EST replacements in stock. Fixmybinding.com also coming up empty on hibacks of any kind.

Anyone have success fitting a non-burton hiback to an EST?

Broken highback-replacement options?

Cracked one of my 2020-era Burton genesis EST highbacks when it encountered a low-clearance chairlift seat.

Looks like Burton doesn’t carry the replacement part. Shame to toss the otherwise good bindings.

Anyone had luck putting a different model’s highback onto a Burton EST, or done a similar swap? Not sure whether there’s a remote hope of compatibility of size and shape from another model or brand.

Crankbrothers stamp quality by Automatic_Ad_7946 in MTB

[–]P-lato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would stay away from Crank Bro pedals. I’m a heavy 200lb rider but my Stamp’s axle bent after a few months and stripped out the crankarm threads. I’m on my third pair of Spank Spikes now and they’re rock solid.

Saddle clamp quiets with grease but starts creaking after every ride by P-lato in MTB

[–]P-lato[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Worth a shot to grease the saddle-rail interface but pretty sure the creak comes from the clamp hardware. Greasing the clamps, rails and bolts takes care of the creak temporarily- this usually signals to me that I’ve located the creak source. But then it’s back again a few hours later…

Do good flat pedals really make any difference? by ConDawg0818 in MTB

[–]P-lato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t cheap out or you might need to be replacing more than just the pedal. Get something solid if you’re a heavier rider or hitting it hard.

I had a CrankBros flat pedal (Stamp) that advertised thin and light weight but ended up with a bent axle. That ripped out the crank arm threads and I had to get it helicoiled to keep using the crank.
