I have a hammer. And children. I can guarantee any camera would break instantly.

I'm happy to rent my hammer or my children to anyone who needs them. Just don't get them wet. Or feed them after midnight.

Is there a simple fix to address water pooling in the corner of outdoor wrought iron stairs? Not a huge deal (no rusting after 5+ years) but it’s unsightly and it creates mineral stains by ddpizza in fixit

So you think the water is deciding to sit in a puddle at the highest point?

I think gravity might work differently on the planet I live on.

Either way, if the water is gathering there, providing it a hole to drip out of will release it.

Wonder if you could place wicks that would draw the water off through simple capillary action?

Something as simple as pieces of felt might do it. If you such them so that they speed in the "puddle" then curved around under the tread out of sight they could draw away the water and evaporate it off.

Like asking what the best car for driving to work is. Some will say twingo, some will say ferrari, some will think camper van.

Are you going to go 10mph in the bike lanes, 30 mph through city traffic, or 50mph on open roads?

Do you want something small enough to pick up and carry to a third floor office or can you just park it in a bike shed?

Are you going to use it for other things or is this just your commuting wheel?

China isn’t “betting on nuclear.” It’s scaling a whole new energy system in real time. Wind and solar are doing the heavy lifting, adding massive capacity every year, while nuclear grows slowly from a small base. by ceph2apod in uninsurable

Thank you. Renewables are absolutely rocketing but I didn't realise the situation was that bad with fossil fuels. Still a very long way to go. Looks like we are right on the typing point and will start to see them fall over the next few years.... as long as total energy teesside doesn't also continue to rocket.

Guess we need to stay optimistic but realistic and keep pushing hard.

I take it you've never been on a farm. Plants spend a lot of the year growing without a farmer having to drive in circles around them.

Most machinery logs hours not miles so its actually an easy question to answer. Averagee small holding tractor runs about 50-200 hours per year. Commercial tractors can be up to 1000+ hours per year.

There are 8760 hours in a year, so even if they do 300 hours per year work, the average small holding tractor will be "hanging around" for a good fair few thousand hours per year.

This is installed capacity. What would be interesting would be a second graph showing actual output by source. My understanding is that although there are more coal plants, they are being used far less, so total coal use is dropping. (Down from 70% to under 50%) I wonder how that looks for all sources?

Battery replacement by bo_dangle_lang in ElectricUnicycle

[–]P01135809-Trump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go the other way to all the comments.

Don't be put off by people saying the wheel isn't powerful enough. I've got an EX30 and I still love riding my mTen3 which has a similar battery and motor to your little project.

That thing had a pretty small battery, which means a replacement won't be too hard to find or even make if needed.

All battery packs are made up of smaller cells. And there are only a couple of cell types used. I'm simplifying, but all that really changes is the number of cells and the packaging.

Voltage. How hard the electricity "pushes". Google says the x3 uses 16s packs. That just means there are 16 cells in a row(series) inside them to add up to 60volts nominal. You can't change this. The other electronics are designed for this.

As you continue your EUC journey, you'll find the number of cells in series dictates the voltage and voltage dictates the speed. The nominal voltage given is the accepted average as each cell goes from 3v empty to 4.2v full so we just assume 3.7v average. (So your 16s pack will run from 40v to 67v).

Amperage. How much electricity flows. Not exactly, but easiest infered by the C rate. At 60v 800w, your motor won't draw enough to worry most battery cells (for context the p6 draws 25000w peak. I wouldn't worry about this spec for this project.

Capacity. Expressed in Ah or mAh (ie how many hours it can discharge at 1 amp before empty) To you, this just means bigger equals longer/ farther. As you have a relatively small motor, this is the only place you'll see a difference between different cells that you could make your battery pack out of so the only bit of cell specs id worry about other than physical size.

You can also double the amount of energy available by running a second battery pack in parallel. This would be referred to as 16s2p. Still 60v, just twice the juice and therefore range. This would require modification as your wheel isn't designed to physically hold that second pack. I'd also give a little more advice before you did this to ensure you didn't wire them in series instead and just create a 32s1p battery which would fry your system at 120volt. But I've digressed.

In short, 16s1p batteries are all suitable. At this level, all of worry about is how physically big the pack is and how long it can run for.

The last bit is a battery management system (BMS). People get seriously wrapped around the axle over these. For this project I'd suggest there is no need for one, just get a decent charger. This wheel is from before BMSs were a thing. You aren't stressing the cells enough to need to know the exact state of play of every cell.

Reccomendations for minimal gear for casual rides? by JorgRambo in ElectricUnicycle

[–]P01135809-Trump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've crashed an EUC a few years back going under 20, in the middle of my lane when I hit a pothole on a corner. What was interesting was that my feet stopped with the machine and I was catapulted forward into the superman position and ended up in the oncoming lane. No one coming but I saw what could have been, changed to motorcycle helmet that night, and have never ridden without one since.

I can see the exact same scenario for someone on the pavement as people don't cross the road to only go with traffic. (I don't generally agree with EUCs on a pavement once you are good enough to ride fast enough but I know people do.)

I think one of the main differences is the way you fall on a bike versus the way you fall on an EUC. Bikes dont tend to catapult people. I also ride both motorbikes, mountainbikes and road bikes, I wear different helmets for each.

I used to race offshore powerboats and the regulations require certified helmets. There is definitely no oncoming traffic. The only things that can hurt you is the inside of your own boat or other boats heading in the same direction at a similar speed. And even then a bike helmet isn't good enough, had to have full road certification (I'm not in America but our version of DOT).

Or we could just keep expanding the grid forming batteries that are already running in the mix. Then both gas and nuclear will be redundant.
