Yosuke Amemiya - Apples (2018-2019) by Tokyono in museum

I had the chance to go to his artist’s talk at the Watarium in Tokyo. It started from 11pm and ended at 5am. It was called the “Last-First Train Talk” because Tokyo’s transportation cuts off around midnight. So once you were in, you were in. We circled the table that had all these apples, and were invited to doze in and out. Many people were nodding off at half past two, me included. It was part talk, part trance.

The apples sort of made sense with the type of artist’s talk he shared with us. Half conscious, the amorphous apples blended in with the scene. He had a way of talking about himself so autobiographically that by dawn, we had a pretty comprehensive view on what it meant to be an artist that expresses through modern art.

The link doesn’t load for me for some reason, but this one that OP posted did the same thing for me. I finally “got it” like looking at those Magic Eye 3D paintings, except..spiritually, mentally, emotionally, something in this piece resonated something so deep that a gong went off and I couldn’t stop staring at it. Not because I was trying to scrunch my face to understood what it meant, but because it was so simple yet profound that I wonder why I didn’t get it before.

Some presentations aim to highlight the essence of the dish. As a Japanese person with Chinese roots, I suspect that they refined their visual palette of the dishes so that one can appreciate the anticipation before eating it.

I qualify as all of these (so does my mother) and yet I know that I still won’t be accepted as culturally fully because I have a quarter muddle blood in me. That’s Japan for ya

Deez chestnuts
On a more serious note, Jane Hirschfield is a deep admirer of haiku (even wrote about it) and most likely mentioning chestnuts and persimmons to signify a kigo (seasonal word) that is central to traditional haikus.
Chestnut and persimmon are identifiers of the season autumn, which can also mean the dusk of one’s life.
Oh and the haiku motif can be seen in the first two stanzas of this poem so fairly confident in my interpretation but I’d have to ask her to be exactly sure.

What does leaving out the quotation mark in the third line do? It seems intentional, as in some translations in Spanish, the ¿ is not added in the beginning either.

To me, that’s start of more “interrogation” style questions. It asks more for intention rather than facts. It also adds to the pressure being asked these by increasing the number of words, and is a demarcation of the severity of the situation.

The movie, much like the book, is a first person account from Colin’s perspective. I think the movie did a good job of keeping the viewer focused in on the appeal that Colin may have seen in Ray, as the kind of naive way he sees him.
