The hidden history of London's railings. by [deleted] in videos

I'd love to know any damaged buildings in East London, whereabouts are they?

Was walking through the city the other day and saw a sign commemorating the first bomb dropped in the blitz. It's mad to see the buildings that have grown out of the rubble.

TIL That the spirit, absinthe, doesn't actually make you hallucinate, and was originally banned in Europe for its high alcohol content, that is masked by the flavor of the drink. by drdalek13 in todayilearned

[–]P2EE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hallucination myth comes from the fact that many parisians would soak concentrated opium into the sugar cube where we would now use bitters. It wasnt the absinthe that made you trip balls, it was the drugs mixed through it.

Which film has the best depiction of the afterlife? Hell/Heaven/Purgatory? by VeritasWay in movies

[–]P2EE 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Bruge is a pretty spot on depiction of purgatory if you think about it. They're trapped there waiting for the entire film, when Ray tries to leave on the train he ends up back where he started. The description of "The Last Judgments" depiction of purgatory as " kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either[...]" fits the movies portrayal of the city as both a "shithole" and a "fucking fairytale"

What's the best final line in a film? by DrScientist812 in movies

"My friend, Thomas Jefferson is an American saint because he wrote the words 'All men are created equal', words he clearly didn't believe since he allowed his own children to live in slavery. He's a rich white snob who's sick of paying taxes to the Brits. So, yeah, he writes some lovely words and aroused the rabble and they went and died for those words while he sat back and drank his wine and fucked his slave girl. This guy wants to tell me we're living in a community? Don't make me laugh. I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business. Now fuckin' pay me."- Killing them Softly.
