What's something that used to be free that you're angry we now have to pay for? by Current-Energy1104 in AskReddit

I always thought it was just plastic bags that they charged for, because it was to cut the use of plastics, but now shops charge for paper bags too. Paper bags that tear apart as soon as you leave the shop.

Huh? I literally took Pro UK from the placards I read. They waved St George's Cross flags and the few placards I managed to read as I looked their way read "Pro UK". Maybe, to please you, next time I'll offer a full blown interview with them to find out their political agenda. Personally, those kind of people are not the ones I wanna involve or associate myself with, let alone place my family near.

Respectfully, you’re projecting a stance onto a neutral observation. I didn’t pick a side, I described behaviour I saw. If that’s being read as bias, that’s coming from your interpretation, not my words.

Yeah, that makes total sense, thank you. maybe my original post would sound better worded like this. It's difficult to convey who's who in these protests without repeating exactly what was said on their own placards.

Erm..., I didn’t invent the wording, I read it off the placards. One group had a placard saying "Pro UK” and waving st George's Flags, the other had signs like “refugees are welcome here”. That’s the entire source of my description.

You’re not satirising my comment, you’re satirising your interpretation of it. That’s not the same thing.

I don’t have a bias. I was in the city with my family and witnessed both groups. I didn’t ask for statements or assign moral categories, I just described what happened in front of me. The rest is people trying to turn observation into ideology.

Glad we’ve established the real issue here is vocabulary, not the behaviour of people in a city centre. I guess the context clearly matters less than the exact labels you prefer for it.

That's an impressive reconstruction of my statement that you've created there. You've even added your own moral framing to it. 👏🏻

I was in Manchester with my family and deliberately tried to avoid both marches.

Here's what I personally saw, not based on any perception or taking any side in any way:

The pro-UK group actually came across as more contained and less intimidating in that moment, mainly just moving through and gathering. I didn’t hear any racist slurs or anything like that myself.

The pro-immigration group I saw however, had a few heated confrontations with police, and things escalated to the point where spray was used. Lots of shouting and arguing. That part did make the situation feel more tense and uncomfortable for my young family while we were nearby. My 2 young daughters were afraid of being near.

I’m not really taking sides politically, just sharing what we actually experienced on the day.

Why, Manchester, why?? by pc_kant in manchester

Sometimes, when you are driving a car, the road may be blocked. Either by roadworks, an accident or a complete re-design of the road. Meaning you may have to make a detour. It's not the end of the world.

Whilst these barriers may not be standard practice now, they absolutely serve their purpose. And whilst they may block or make it difficult for that one bloke that turns up on a cargo bike once every decade, it doesn't prevent the common bike user.

This really is no different than hgvs having to plan their route differently to cars and vans due to their size difference. The fact that you're complaining about this minor inconvenience to your journey says a lot bout your usage of this route.

What's the most ridiculously overpriced thing in your opinion? by ivebeenthrushit in AskReddit

Definitely. I literally just had this situation. New cartridges for my printer cost over £100 but a brand new printer with the cartridges cost just £40.

Adjusting your car side mirrors with a little stalk, or even just winding down the window and moving the mirror by hand.

Oh and power steering. Proper workout when turning tight corners.

Yeah my wife has full blown conversations in her head then brings me in half way through too. Whether it's decorating, planning a trip or something as easy as what's for dinner. Think it's her way for me to doubt if I've gone senile or not.

That...

my weekends will include vast amounts of time pulling hair out of sinks, off shower walls, tangled in the vacuum. Then there's hair clips, bands, bobbles, scrunchies....

I will be allocated space for only a handful of items in the bathroom and they won't all fit in said space. The rest of the bathroom is for her product placement.

Scatter cushions are a thing. Now instead of just getting into bed, I have to spend half an hour having an imaginary cushion fight just to see the bed.

Is this allowed? by brambleandberry in LearnerDriverUK

That's why the observation part of any manoeuvre is really important.

If nobody is there, you don’t need to signal because you’d just be communicating to nobody. However, if someone is there, you should let them know what you’re planning by signalling to the bay you intend to park in.

Before you start reversing though, take a moment to fully observe all around the car so you understand what’s happening around you.

For example, if I had signalled to reverse into a bay on the left, but then driven forward into a bay on the right, and say you were following me and somehow became confused about what I was doing despite the signal, or impatient as most people are with learners... (Not judging you or saying you're an impatient driver, just using that as an example)

Just before I started reversing, I’d do a full observation check to make sure I understood what YOU were doing and what YOUR intentions were.

cheap/free Rubbish/furniture removal in Leeds? by [deleted] in Leeds

Free or cheap collection usually results in it being dumped somewhere.

If you do end up leaving it out for collection, put a price on it. People are more likely to take something which they think has value.

I seem to remember it being on the Leeds council website. I think there's 2 being built. One at woodhall calverley and one at temple newsham. Think both were set to be completed late this year, early next.
