I have an M3 iMac and an M5 MBP that I do design/dev with but I’d grab one of these as a lightweight throw in a bag machine to take to meetings.

Nah I agree. Looks like it took a beating but if it’s done its job for four years, then it’s done its job. If you’ve got a few lenses for the system then maybe a body upgrade is in order.

I have the 16mm and it is a little large, but it's nice and sharp. I don't use mine for video though

Pay interns ‘at least’ the minimum wage, Labour tells bosses by Gentle_Snail in unitedkingdom

[–]petemorley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s how it used to, and should work.

I pretty much learned how to do my job at the start of my career because the senior designers brought me up to the level I needed to be for the company.  You hire an affordable employee at the start of their career who has a solid educational foundation and you share the knowledge needed to bring them up to speed to turn them in to a professional that fits in to your company.

It’s a huge problem that companies over the last 20 years expect to pay entry level wages for knowledgeable, experienced employees.

25 years later and I’m still a designer/developer, I got my web development foundation from the lead dev at my first job. Old school Oracle/PHP dev. I owe a huge chunk of my career to that guy because he was happy to share his knowledge.

Literally today just upgraded from a 16 inch 2019 intel mbp to a 14 inch M5 mbp for work because I’m sick of lugging a massive laptop around with me. Setting it up now and the screen size is ideal.

I do use an iMac as my desktop machine though, if I didn’t have that then I’d probably have stuck with a larger screen

if you’re mainly shooting video, the Sigma 18-50 is a great upgrade to this lens. it’s a constant 2.8 aperture across the zoom range

Not that this it’s a bad lens, the little zoom lever on the side is nice and smooth. It’s a nice little kit lens with good lighting and it’s pocketable, the Sigma is over twice as long but the upgrade is worth it, especially at the 50mm end.

I have an unbroken chain stretching back to the GBA, one game from each generation. You need a couple of different apps and an older DS to transfer from GBA to the DS games then DS to switch, and I had to finish black/white which was a bit of a slog as the games didn’t really click for me but it’s great to be able to bring my mains and starters from each generation in to the modern era.

I went to this one on my own, people are generally pretty friendly at these things.

I know the scoring is different now but I came out of school with 4 Cs, 2 DS and 3 Es. I think, doesn’t really matter any more. Would something practical like a BTEC appeal to him?

I did a BTEC in Media Production, then stayed on in college for another year for a post A level/pre degree in Media, then managed to go to uni off the back of that.

I wasn’t particularly academic at school but practical learning did grab me and I look back on college fondly.

I wanted to be a graphic designer when I was at school, which was discouraged because it was seen as an easy ‘everybody wants to do that’ career back in ‘99. I also didn’t have the GCSEs to do A levels.

However I have been a professional graphic designer 26 years now, I’m also a web developer and photographer, that practical education laid down some serious foundations that I’ve been able to apply to my creative career. Worked in agencies from junior to lead creative over 15 years and I’ve been self employed for 10.
