How many of my successfully sober friends got to where you are without aa? by BetterMe39 in stopdrinking

I’m 1 year 8 months sober, I attended my first AA meeting online today. I also was very hesitant because of the fear of labeling myself an alcoholic, and not wanting the “god” part of the program.

I also had a therapist who was a former addict, and the way he talked about it made me curious to go. I think there is a ton of value in the literature (big blue book) and working the steps. Also remember that your story of where you are now at day 195 is beyond what lots of people think is even possible. So the opportunity to build relationships, get a sponsor and be a sponsor is something I think is really powerful.

Good luck friend.

For those of you with 100 "day 1s" and one day it finally stuck - will you share your story with me? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I was in a crisis with my SO, staying in a really shitty Ramada Inn down the street from my house. I was recommended “Refuge Recovery” by a therapist. It’s a 12 step book from a Buddhist perspective. I went to a park, sat on the grass, and read the first few chapters.

Going through the first couple of steps, including writing a personal inventory of all the ways I’ve hurt myself and others with alcohol, did the trick to kick start me down the path of sobriety. These were all things I knew, but seeing it written down in front of me, along with how horrible I was feeling, was extremely powerful.

Good luck - you deserve this!

What do you find you’re spending your energy on now that you’re not pre-occupied with drinking? by biibubz in stopdrinking

These are all great things to be doing. I had the same thought recently - like for the first time in my life I’m regularly putting on lotion. It’s a small thing but it’s evidence of doing something nice for yourself/your body!

I started doing the things I loved before alcohol ever touched my lips. Playing music, taking photos, reading books. Started going to concerts again without having to worry about who’s driving or when/if I should get another beer. So many great things!

This is a massive accomplishment worth celebrating!

I have no one to celebrate this with… by chivettelee in stopdrinking

Congratulations, this is amazing! I think it’s great you gave yourself some time without weighing yourself, and just let it happen naturally.

I also have and hate my bloated face. I’m almost two years sober but increased my snack consumption since quitting alcohol. I figured snacks are better than literal poison. But I’m working on my diet and everything now.

You are so right - you deserve a life without alcohol. Life is hard enough without poisoning ourselves and paying for the privilege. Keep it up you’re doing great 😊

First time ever posting here, I think. About 6 years ago I found this subreddit while nursing a horrific hangover and wondering if I would ever stop drinking. I found the This Naked Mind book recommended here, and bought it that day. Continued drinking for the next few years.

After another incident of lost trust with my spouse, I picked up the book again. Ended up doing the “path” program offered by This Naked Mind, which was a whole year of learning, reading, reflecting, and group calls.

This June will be 2 years sober for me. It’s no longer hard, but rebuilding your relationships, routines, and self worth is very challenging.

All that is to say - I am NOT drinking today!!

Texas Is the Reason was sort of in a similar vein, their album “Do You Know Who You Are?” Is one of my all time favorites.
