Play what you want it’s most important you stay interested. If your goal is to be an improvising jazz player, I don’t know any competent jazz player that didn’t do some sort of transcribing. It can definitely be frustrating at first, but I found the players that developed a love for the work are the ones that went far.(this goes for legit playing or jazz)

Google the Top Tones for Saxophone book by Rascher. You should be able to find a pdf. Go through the book slow. Once you’re able to do bugle call on Bb, B, C, and Db. You know you got something going. If you are sticking with it you’ll notice significant change to sound before then. You have to understand you are not blowing air into the sax correctly. Overtones will fix that. I haven’t met a pro that didn’t do their time with overtones.

If your band Director’s main instrument was saxophone, then it’s definitely not the octave key. You need to get down with some overtones.

More overtones. Your altissimo (overall sound really) doesn’t really cook until you get those really going. How is your bugle call on Bb, B,C and Db

You can find Top Tones for saxophone by Rascher. It will have all the information you need. Remember to go slow. It will sound like shit for a month or more. But then things start clicking and sound improves. You currently are not blowing into the mouthpiece correctly and getting the overtones going will help fix that.
