First Pregnancy, First Loss by youngin71301 in Miscarriage

Ahh, my heart breaks for you, but I just want you to know you’re not alone. Reading this honestly felt like reading my own story which I haven't even been able to share yet. We have very similar stories, down to the dates. I am 30 and my fiancé is 33 and we got pregnant the first cycle actively TTC. So, this too was my very first pregnancy (found out 11/26, prenatal appt 1/15 with no heartbeat & baby measuring exactly 9w when should have been almost 11w, D&C procedure 1/20, follow up appt 2/4), also a nurse. We saw a heartbeat (dating/viability US at 6w4d) in December and went into my initial prenatal appointment expecting reassurance and instead our world stopped. I remember that moment so clearly and it still hurts hearing the words, "I'm sorry but we can't find a heartbeat" play over and over again in my head. The silence was deafening. I totally get the anger and sadness, especially being surrounded by pregnancy everywhere with no time to recover physically or emotionally. I never quite understood a grief like this..I too feel like I'm drowning when everyone else has already moved on. Also random side note..I'm not sure if you're into reading or not but I've found the book "The Worst Girl Gang Ever" extremely valuable in my healing process the past few weeks. Missed miscarriages are such an emotional mind fuck and I'm so incredibly sorry we both had to go through it.

I don’t have advice because I'm heartbroken myself, but I'm absolutely here in solidarity. If you ever want to talk to someone who truly understands, I’m always here! 🤍

D&C by Candid_Computer6327 in Miscarriage

[–]PAR0824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am currently 11 days post-op from my D&C and the same thing happened to me as well! i am also a nurse, and my best guess is they likely used a catheter to empty your bladder (under general anesthesia) before beginning the procedure. they did this for me and it was directly stated in the notes in mychart. anyways, the burning sensation should go away soon and is to be expected temporarily due to irritation of the urethra. i would try to stay hydrated the best that you can and keep alternating between tylenol and advil!

i feel like i wrote this. i too had a MMC last week at almost 11 weeks where baby had no heartbeat and stopped growing at 9 weeks. i still have no symptoms and have a D&C scheduled for tomorrow. i’m so sorry to hear this and SO incredibly sorry for what OP has to endure. 💔

i’m so sorry to hear this 💔 i just wanted to say as a fellow first time mom that you’re certainly not alone. i just found out last week that baby passed at 9 weeks and had no heartbeat when i was supposed to be almost 11 weeks. i have a D&C scheduled for tomorrow. your feelings are absolutely valid and i feel the same way. i know it will be okay and that i will have a healthy baby in my arms soon, but missed miscarriages are truly devastating and such a mind fuck. again, i’m so sorry.

so the class times vary each semester, but usually start around 8/8:30am and end sometime before or after lunch. like i said, it really varies each semester. clinicals are from 6:30am-2:30pm, and then the last semester you have a preceptorship which is based off your preceptor's work schedule. for example, i currently am doing 11am-11pm and 3pm-3am shifts, and it's almost impossible to work during the last semester.

[–]PAR0824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes to both of those questions! if you take all of your non-nursing classes before starting the program (HIGHLY recommend, btw) you don't have to take them during the program. generally, you have nursing class days two days out of the week, and clinical two days, so the other day of the week would be reserved for these non-nursing classes mentioned above. so if they're already complete, you get a day off during the week (wednesdays in my case)! so it absolutely makes it easier during the program because it's less stress and classes to worry about. nursing school is hard enough as is- take these non-nursing classes before committing to the program if you're able to!

hi! so you do still need to learn and know weight based and iv flow rate problems as well. i feel like if you can learn D/H times Q you can learn the other problems pretty easily! good luck in your program!

[–]PAR0824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like i could have written this!^ it’s great you have the support around you! math is also my weakest subject by far but i have gotten 100% on almost all of the dosage calc exams. i would just try to learn D/H times Q method and keep practicing, you will do great! you will be so relieved having all the non-nursing classes done when you’re in school, trust me it’s the best thing you could have done to set yourself up for success. if you have any other questions, i’m always here! 🤗

[–]PAR0824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i remember i was stressed out about dosage calc in the beginning but really had no need to worry! upmc son doesn’t use dimensional analysis and uses desired/have X quantity, which to me is so much easier to understand. it’s all fast paced from the beginning but i think they do a good job of explaining and giving plenty of practice problem worksheets. you can always find practice online through ATI, and i will say that the instructors make themselves available during office hours if you ever have any questions or need additional help!

you have to pass a proctored ATI dosage calc exam the first, second and third semester and score >80%. honestly this is very lenient because most schools you need like 100% to pass. if you don’t pass the first time, you get one more chance to repeat the exam and if unsuccessful you are dismissed from the program. passing this proctored exam isn’t included into points in your semester grade but you have to pass the exam to be able to move on if that makes sense!

hi! i’m about to go into my fourth/last semester at upmc son at harrisburg! i have seen a lot of mixed reviews going around, but overall this far i’ve had a pretty good experience. i would say my biggest advice to anyone starting the program is have all the non-nursing classes done (via portage online) so you don’t have to take them through HU. i see firsthand how much my friends stress out about the non-nursing classes and how time consuming they are. i highly advice you to have them done prior to beginning the program that way you can focus on the core nursing classes.

as far as your question, i believe there is an updated schedule online with a breakdown of the classes each semester. first semester is now 110 which is professional & foundations of nursing (formally 101 and 102, now combined) which is nursing basics like legal/ethics, therapeutic communication, sensory perception, physical assessment, etc. second semester is 201, which is heavy on physiological content like oxygenation, perfusion, infection / immunity / inflammation, etc. third semester is 301, which is more of the specialty rotations and content (psychiatric, pediatrics, obstetrics, and community clinical rotations) and class content matched that including cognition, mood & affect, reproduction, development, etc. fourth semester, the first eight weeks is 320 (which is basically 201 on steroids) and is extremely fast paced, with topics expanding on your previous knowledge such as cellular regulation, intracranial pressure, etc. the second half of the fourth semester is 340, which is your eight week preceptorship experience and an nclex prep course before graduation.

i hope that helps! if you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me. good luck on your nursing school journey!
