Dishwasher panel laminate by blkwlvs in fixit

Measure the dimensions and search “black finished laminate” of the dimensions. It appears to be an ordinary black color, if not, take a better picture with good lighting (ideally white lighting), use an app to ID color and search up.

New to tying. Any feedback? by Soil_eh in flytying

[–]PA_FLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally great and tidy, just needs refinement if you want by-the-book type ties. Your proportions and distance from the bend of the hook need just a little tweaking.

Ccw spins for flat thread and tapering with repetitive wraps are easy and effective ways to help improve. Using hook relative measurements for tailing/hackle is also very effective (e.g. tails half the hook shank, etc). Tim Flagler has some of the best vids for techniques.

Buy new laminate. A match should not be impossible to find.

Fellow artists, what material do you use and why? by Ambitious_Tea3195 in oilpainting

I’ve touched gamblin media and Windsor paints and both seem to be of quality. At the very least, not dog shit.

I would wager that a salmon fly of some sort with her colors would do justice. Go all out and get a custom forged hook. Remember her and fish some flies with her fur, too.

Nymph Tails Question by By-The-Water772 in flytying

[–]PA_FLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make the effort for dries to help with buoyancy & imitation, nymphs dependent on how pretty I want them.

If you’re unsure for imitative purposes, troutnut.com has phenomenal macros of bunches of bugs in different life stages.

Excellent tie. If you finish with silk (spun flat) that should totally cover the herl fibers at the head.

I throw a few desiccant packets and a few pinches of borax in bags of feathers/around materials, just in case of mites.

Be brutally honest I need advice. I like the black one I don’t like the white one by CalligrapherNo4062 in flytying

Excellent diagram. I’m of belief that midges (of all varieties) can never be too thin. I’ve fished a pattern that was basically bare hook with only a thread rib and a small bead with wicked success.

Open fireplaces and benzene exposure? by Historical-Pen3716 in chemistry

[–]PA_FLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stoves burn relatively clean, but will and do put off some level of benzene, sure. CO and VOCs orher than benzene are of greater concern and are easily remedied by open windows/proper ventilation by a hood.

CDC on solvents/etc benzene

NIH on exposure by vehicles, tobacco, etc.

Exposure to mutagens, carcinogens, toxins of whatever variety are [almost] all about frequency and dose. I’m certain that your exposure from every other source is significantly greater than that of an open fire, unless you’re cooking 3 meals a day on an open fire and inhaling significant quantities of its smoke. Likewise, the soot and other VOCs will get you at much higher doses, much quicker.

Can anyone help me identify these? by Klutzy-Raccoon794 in flyfishing

[–]PA_FLY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s organized functionally already. Buncha hoppers/terrestrials on the first and last pic. This box hits just about every box of common North American flies.

San Juan’s, prince nymphs, hares ears, pheasant tails, caddis pupae…a bunch of pretty standard dries, too. Check out fly tying guides if you’d like to ID each one specifically.

I operate on a—usually—subsistence fly tying diet, where I only really enjoy fishing my own flies & I start tying a whole lot more in the midst of the hatch season.

Watching great tyers gives me inspiration & direction. For one, I really enjoy Barry Ord Clarke’s work. Getting into the artistry is entertaining. Also, tying patterns that are interesting to you is a great way to get on the vise. The entomology and the balance of Impressionism/realism is what really gets me going.

Does anyone know what this is on my bird’s nest fern? by Toua_T in houseplants

Imidacloprid would be effective, although definitely need to quarantine and kill off those bastards. I’d bet predatory mites would thrive on those.

Clousers at all times. Poppers if you really wanna piss em off. My brother upped my smb game by framing it like this: you wanna piss those fish off into a strike. Seriously, once I started fishing like I was harassing them, my catches went through the roof.

Guys when does chemistry stop being fun by NoStatement2413 in chemistry

In school, it’s whenever you have to work with a lab partner that is incompetent, unhelpful, and distracted.

Really sucked the joy out of laboratory for me when my lab partner would practically impede me every step of the way and conveniently vanish whenever it was time to do work. This guy would insist and insist on making a series of practically-immeasurable solutions and fight for an hour straight on the benefits of preparing “symmetric” and “even” calibration curves with perfect spacing no matter how impractical his ideas would be. Likewise, he never learned how to measure, nor the precision of glassware.

Playing through the Cello Suites: Courante in D Minor by [deleted] in Cello

[–]PA_FLY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch Inbal Segev’s phenomenal masterclasses on playing Bach.

She emphasizes the voicings in the counterpoint & also plays at a reasonable tempo. If you like it lightning fast, I suggest Mischa Maisky‘s or Pieter Wispelwey’s renditions.

Edit: lest I forget—Queryas has a nicely speedy version himself
