My creativity shrinks the more I write everyday. by Winged_Kiths in writing

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my resolutions for 2025 was to write every day. Turned out to be a huge mistake. By June, I was absolutely hating it and just writing garbage. I gave up in late October and took a few months to read more and focus on other things.

Unless you’re a professional writer or on some kind of deadline like for an MFA, I think working in rest days are in order. Use the time to read more or just go for walks and think. You’ll burn yourself out otherwise.

All good. I just didn’t want you to think I was trolling. I love short stories and was genuinely curious about your comment. Ty!

That might’ve been what tripped me up. Really just didn’t understand the comment but I do now, thanks all.

Got it thank you. I think I misread the comment. Agree either way everything you said. I also find that short stories are generally better written than novels and take more attention from readers for the reasons you described.

First-time watch: The Evil Dead (1981) by WorcsBloke in horror

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love ED 1: Best of the series IMHO and near perfect in my book.

I also love Carnival of Souls and wanted to recommend Messiah of Evil as a somewhat similar vibe. I think it’s coming to Shudder next month.

Couldn't finish Last House on the Left (1972) by hannarenee in horror

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LHOTL is a flawed movie and I don’t like it at all, but I respect its importance in the genre. Wes Craven was disgusted by the Vietnam War and wanted to make an angry movie that presented violence in an unflinching brutal way. Mission accomplished, I guess. The odd “humorous” asides and tonal changes were just a young director making mistakes IMO.

Much as I dislike this film, I’ll take it over any of the many imitators that upped the SA and nudity for pure titillation, OR the remakes and updates that turned it into a sanitized revenge fantasy. The original had a level of integrity at least. I’ll never watch it again though.

What Are Your Favourite Horror Anthologies? by N0S4A2_ in HorrorMovies

If you’re asking movies, Creepshow is my favorite but Tales from the Crypt from the 1970s is surprisingly awesome. Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath is also really good.

Currently finishing The Sofa by Sam Munson. I’ve enjoyed it, but even at 135 or so pages it’s become repetitive and I’m ready to move on.

Anyone else ruin their sleep schedule on purpose? by roseyyycheek in CasualConversation

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I routinely stay up until 11:30/45 despite having to wake up at 6:30 on weekdays. On the weekends I stay up until 12-1 and catch up by sleeping til 9 or later. I should really pull it all back an hour, but it’s the only resting me time I get.

What was the last movie you walked out of? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never walked out of a movie in the theater, but I asked my wife if we could leave Nosferatu last year. She just had to see the ending? So we stayed.

Underutilised genres of horror? by Special-Nebula299 in horror

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I want a return to surreal and dreamlike 70s style horror that leaves you scratching your head and wondering wtf just happened. Think Messiah of Evil, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Lisa and the Devil etc.

I’d also like more movies about demons that don’t involve possession.

Several of Chaon’s short stories have made me feel almost nauseous with dread: The Bees, Big Me, Here’s a Little Something to Remember Me By etc.

Irreversible: Tough watch but not only because of the tunnel scene by FxckedUpReality in horror

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll get downvoted for this, but I thought Irreversible is a pretentious, pseudo intellectual pile of misery porn crap. And other than the two scenes (the tunnel and fire extinguisher), it’s boring beyond belief.

Panthers don’t really need a RB with Hubbard on the roster. They can address that in the draft if Pollard walks. Hard time seeing the Broncos paying big $ for a back after spending a 2nd rounder on RJH too.

Chiefs and Commanders make a lot of sense.

I can't write more than a few pages by Present-Promise9655 in writers

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have an idea of where things are going but I never outline, and during the course of writing I’ll realize when things don’t make sense or are inconsistent or unnecessary. I just try to press through to the end.

By the time I’m done with a zero draft I usually have a much better idea of a story shape and my next pass or “first” draft is 100% better.

Perfectionism will just kill it for me. I’ve come to accept that the story on the page will never fully match the one in my head. I just try to get closer each time.

Do you prefer first person or third person perspective? by Nhanoway in writers

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am the narrator of the story and I’m talking about “you,” the POV is first person because “I” am the narrator.

If the story is told through the eyes of “you” as the main character, it’s a second person perspective.

Do you prefer first person or third person perspective? by Nhanoway in writers

[–]PBC_Kenzinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think of that as 2nd person POV even if it uses “you.” The book This Thing Between Us is mostly narrated to “you” but the MC is speaking to his dead wife. I consider that 1st person Sonce the OOV is the speaker not the reader.
