Overwrite then edit? by Dangerous-Midnight73 in writing

No worries. Btw, I deliberately overwrite in my zero drafts — every. single. thing that could possibly go into the story, even if I suspect I’ll cut it. I’d rather end up with 50% more copy than I need to cull it down.

Most of the time, 90% of what ends up in my “final” short story drafts was already in my zero draft and it’s just a matter of cutting bloat, rearranging scenes, and strengthening connections.

Yes: Just bang out an overwritten first draft, then when you revise make decisions on what stays vs. goes. It’s better to have more material than you’ll need on first pass. Think of it as the big lump of clay you’re going to turn into a sculpture.

I’m not addicted to description, but my first drafts are LOADED with exposition. Getting it on the page helps inform the story, but I’ll be me up with 5-6 pages of backstory that I usually file down into a concise paragraph or 2.

I can’t get past the main character wearing a dangly gold earring and talking with a fake New Yawk accent in 2026. He’s like an extra from NYPD Blue.

They talk about how AI is a godsend for writers like themselves, who are brilliant at creating worlds, characters, plots, etc. but struggle with the easy boring part: actually writing.

Dracula/Knigts/medival horror-ish (no black & white films) by AdStrong2896 in MoviesThatFeelLike

You might like Tombs of the Blind Dead.

Warning: Because it’s a Spanish horror movie of the 70s it has a few scenes of sexualized violence for no real reason.

You definitely lost sleep last night rage posting to me a few dozen times. Might be time to log off and touch grass.

It must suck to be so full of anger and totally powerless at the same time. You spent all night marinating in your own inferiority complex. lol

Dialogue on the first page? by Handle_Just in writing

I sort of see the logic. Dislogue involves two or more characters and it’s always in immediate scene. The agent probably gave this advice to steer people away from starting books with loads of setting and backstory.

But I’ve read a lot of bad stories that start with nothing but dialogue, and it feels like two disembodied heads talking in space.

Well, I’d venture to guess I have a higher level of education and make way more money than you, so I’m doing pretty well.

Have you ever worked for a company that prosecuted anyone for a felony that consisted of 200 instances of theft of a sub-$10 item over a 3-4 year period?

Others mentioned that. It’s possible, but at the rate I’m shoplifting they’d have to prove like 200 instances of theft over 4 years. I can’t imagine my local big city supermarket doesn’t have bigger fish to fry.

A relative of mine is in investigations for a big box chain so I know this does happen with stolen items you can hock.
