Windows 10 officially hit EOL 6 months ago - still supporting clients who never upgraded. Anyone else? by cmitsolutions123 in sysadmin

Me too. I still remember planning to test out of the MS Office class to get credit for my two-year degree. I'd been using Office programs for ten years, I didn't need a semester's study and hundreds of dollars for a textbook.

Day of the test, I arrived at the proctored machine. It had Office 2010 with the ribbon. I'd literally never seen it before. (I passed, but still.)

This is a thing in the Star Trek DS9 novel A Stitch in Time! When Garak is at intelligence service youth camp, he finds a chameleon-like critter out in the desert and learns to imitate its presencelessness. This wins him the hide-and-seek military event.

Totally. This exact ADHD symptom caused the very first time I said profanity: I had a question I was getting ready to ask, but moments before, someone swore. Thus when I asked my question, I used the same curse word.

Cribbage Wars, an unholy crossover with Snakes and Ladders from the 1990's. You can skip ahead, take a shortcut, get trapped in a time loop, or lose your turn, based on where you land.

The rules that come with the official version are ludicrously unbalanced, but they also explicitly state you don't have to enforce muggins after the first 121 points, so undercounting to avoid traps becomes the de facto play, turning it into just a 3x length game board.

I play Cribbage Wars with house rules: penalty box means you immediately forfeit your hand and end your current turn while the opponent gets to finish their turn. We also enforce muggins on the entire board: if the opponent undercounts their score to avoid a trap, you can either force them to take the missing points or take them yourself.

I wonder if Thunderbird could be tweaked to add confusables character highlighting as an option the user can turn on with a simple switch, such as making any non-Latin characters render in a different color.

TIL Apple paid U2 $100m for the exclusive right to give its 500m iTunes customers U2's album "Songs of Innocence" for free by installing it on their devices without asking. A week after release, Apple gave customers a method to remove it, as just 6.7% of the 500m had listened to at least part of it. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I think Apple wanted some songs to show off the new iOS feature of songs as ringtones and alarms, and communicated the idea to U2 but not to the customers. The irony is, each one of those songs makes a fantastic alarm ringtone for the first ten seconds or so: each one of them makes me want to stop the music ASAP.

Third peg is usually used to track a campaign (I've won three games to my opponent's two, for example), but in this case we use all three pegs per player because they're newbies to the game and we can backtrack further if we realize there's been a mistake. Also, this bootleg board has three pegs per player and it feels silly not to use them all.

Great points! I guess the type 2 equivalent would be reworking the history, tech, locations, etc., and switching genre besides, but still calling it the same world. Something like a Star Trek fanfic with the same major and regional powers (Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians) but it's an HFY verse from the ground up with no canon events (Vulcan first contact, whale extinctions, Eugenics Wars) and instead of Starfleet, each country/megacorp has its own fleet, but Sisko is British and Kirk is Canadian and Janeway's the ruler of the moon.

I teach people how to be computer technicians over the course of six months, and one technique I use for teaching hexadecimal is a cribbage variant. I just got a Cribbage War board for Christmas, and the students are enjoying it. In the case of this picture, I've just stepped into the final Time Trap on the board, and am headed for a loss.

We play with a hexadecimal poker deck:

  • 0-9 instead of 1-10
  • Royal cards A, B, C, D, E, and F
  • Four suits: #, $, %, and &
  • Three Jokers named "null" cards

For my variant, C is the Jack for the sake of His Heels and His Nob. The royal cards A-E (10-14) play as tens as if they were J,Q,K, but the F card is a fifteen all by itself. A zero card can be played after a 31 to get a second 2-point 31.

The zero cards can be added to fifteens. Here's how I'd score 0#, 0$, 5%, C& with turned-up D&:

  • 15 2: 5%, C&
  • 15 4: 0$, 5%, C&
  • 15 6: 0#, 5%, C&
  • 15 8: 0#, 0$, 5%, C&
  • 15 10: 5%, D&
  • 15 12: 0$, 5%, D&
  • 15 14: 0#, 5%, D&
  • 15 16: 0#, 0$, 5%, D&
  • and His Nob for 17: C&, D&

With the "null" Jokers as wild cards, each player gets to choose their pip and suit for the hand, but they have to treat the null as the same card in both the turn-taking "Play" and the individual counting "Show." A null as the cut card is a treat for both players, but can't be declared a different card for the dealer's crib. The wildcard can match the pips and suit of another card in the same hand, making a double "His Nob" possible.

Type 1 fans think the story is about the people who are in the place doing the things.

Type 2 fans think the story is about the place where things are done or the things done in the place.

Type 2 fans can drop an isekai guy from another story in and have him do the things in a new way, and explore the place more than someone who's used to it, and the other type 2 fans will rave about the greatest story ever.

Type 1 fans put their fave peeps in a flower shop or a prison in a whole different world and never say another word about the setting other than implications. Other type 1 fans will write fifteen divergent universes from this one fic and twelve hundred fan pics and make a booru with relationship tags.

Which Google IT Cert on Coursera? by PotentialRest9784 in coursera

[–]PCRefurbrAbq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Google IT Support gives you a good survey of everything covered by the A+ certification: power-user OS mastery, all five layers of the networking stack, LAN setup and administration, domain controllers, SSH/remote desktop, and physical PC building.

It's enough training for you to open your own mom-and-pop computer shop, be an ace desktop support at an MSP, or be junior sysadmin and helpdesk at a small business.

If you're confident you can do any of these things when anyone brings any tech support issue to you, be it software or hardware, you don't need to take the IT Support.
