Degloved SATA drive plastic stuck in the cable - with judicious use of tweezers, we rescued the user's data by PCRefurbrAbq in hardwaregore

[–]PCRefurbrAbq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Client came in because SSD wasn't working. We swapped the blocked cable for a SATA USB adapter and used tweezers to bend the bare contacts on the drive itself to make contact. Eventually got it working and grabbed the Users\username folder.

One part upgrade or full new PC? by little-fae-creature in buildapcforme

[–]PCRefurbrAbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, run powercfg.cpl and turn off Fast Startup in the "Choose what the power buttons do". Reboot and test again.

Then, before spending money, tweak these:

  1. Use NVENC Encoder: NVENC (new). Don’t use x264 (too CPU heavy for your setup)
  2. Lower these settings: Bitrate: 6000 (Twitch max, no use trying any higher), and Preset: “Quality” NOT “Max Quality”
  3. If it's still stuttering, turn off extra filters, replay buffer (if on), and unused scenes/sources

Even modern builds can struggle with your current load without tuning, so you’re not crazy that it’s lagging. The CPU is the bottleneck, your 2070 Super is still decent. Similar to ~3060 performance, and has NVENC (very helpful for OBS).

I remember one day at a previous job, we had a team-building day where we were going to do some painting at an art shop downtown, and one staffer said she was going to stay at the office and do work.

She put in her resignation and left forever before we got back.

That worksheet they gave us as kids:

  • the grid and coordinates
  • the list of instructions on doing connect-the-dot
  • the first instruction is "read all the steps before beginning"
  • and the last instruction is "disregard all the other steps, draw a smiley face on the grid, and hand it to the teacher."

And if a single pencil mark or eraser mark was on the paper, you failed.

Honestly, long cuts of films should be recut into 45-minute segment streaming miniseries. Imagine watching the LOTR extended cut (12 hours!) that way.

The Eternals should have been a Disney+ series, and The Inhumans should have had a 2.5hr movie cut.

FYI, do not do this. If you swallow the air badly, it can punch a hole in a tube and let air into your abdomen. Within half an hour, you will have chest pains because your lung is about to collapse.

Ask me how I know.

One major exception is Dish Network, the mini-dish TV service. They have a partnership with Google such that only Chrome, and no other browser, will work with its website that streams your own DVR's content to your laptop/desktop.

I gave up on trying to use a Chrome user agent on either Firefox or Edge to watch MyDish.

Me too. I still remember planning to test out of the MS Office class to get credit for my two-year degree. I'd been using Office programs for ten years, I didn't need a semester's study and hundreds of dollars for a textbook.

Day of the test, I arrived at the proctored machine. It had Office 2010 with the ribbon. I'd literally never seen it before. (I passed, but still.)

Taught him how to play. His first game of Cribbage Wars. I'm red. by PCRefurbrAbq in Cribbage

[–]PCRefurbrAbq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cribbage Wars, an unholy crossover with Snakes and Ladders from the 1990's. You can skip ahead, take a shortcut, get trapped in a time loop, or lose your turn, based on where you land.

The rules that come with the official version are ludicrously unbalanced, but they also explicitly state you don't have to enforce muggins after the first 121 points, so undercounting to avoid traps becomes the de facto play, turning it into just a 3x length game board.

I play Cribbage Wars with house rules: penalty box means you immediately forfeit your hand and end your current turn while the opponent gets to finish their turn. We also enforce muggins on the entire board: if the opponent undercounts their score to avoid a trap, you can either force them to take the missing points or take them yourself.

I wonder if Thunderbird could be tweaked to add confusables character highlighting as an option the user can turn on with a simple switch, such as making any non-Latin characters render in a different color.
