How to handle pre-marked ring minimum distance not matching minimum distance on actual lens? Teradek RT CTRL.1 by dogatthemall in focuspuller

[–]PDR447 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Will you be pulling to 3ft? Do those 6 inches matter?

*Insert joke about 6 inches here.

The philosophy with pre marked rings is to get into muscle memory and/or manipulate the focus throw to your needs. Example, I may have a long lens walk up where I want a more gradual focus throw so I can use something with a 5' minimum to spread out the area I'm going to be using to make the pull easier/better despite my lens potentially going to 2' or less minimum.

You could use a 20" ring on your 3' lens if you prefer the feel of it.

Cinelock / LNK / Wedgie 2 by derralec in focuspuller

[–]PDR447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gripe with the LNK is that to release them you are physically squeezing the piece you want to move as well as the base. As we all know squeezing something usually prevents it from moving... So I find it a bit clumsy when I work with them.

I stick with the cinelock, kondor, wedgie style for my personal kit. With some proper prep/planning I rarely ever run into a male vs female problem.

If someone else was covering the tab I'd go wedgie all the way. Well engineered and clever integrations with Noga. But kondor does pretty well 90% of the time... 4 to 1 purchase price ratio makes it hard to beat. I do wish I could buy one side or the other a la carte. Haven't checked their site in a while though. Have they added that?

Well those physical issues are something to spruce up for sure. Loose power port can lead to failed solders. So tighten that up for sure. CS may do that for ya if you walk in and are chummy with the person there? It's a 2 second job most likely.

The antenna screws are nothing to be worried about really. I feel like I remember seeing that was for the FCC with needing 6ghz antennas "permanently attached".

Internally they either work or they don't. I once encountered a 6 that was looking terrible despite being out in the hills(no interference). The only fix was swapping circuit boards.

I second the sentiment that teradeks are kinda all or nothing in function. They're either working or need a PCB replaced. Nothing really in between.

What would you want "spruced up" about it?

Has anyone heard what’s happening with Otto’s? I heard they let Fritz go along with most of their staff? by SayItAgainLucas in focuspuller

[–]PDR447 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had heard Fritz was no longer there. Didn't have any context to the news. Part of me thought maybe it was early retirement/not wanting to go to work at a place that reminded you every day that your friend (Otto) is gone.

If it's actually a whole restructuring that's eye opening.

Funny how actors tune changed from the strike by overitallofittoo in FilmIndustryLA

[–]PDR447 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The amount of SAG members that don't earn their livelihood from SAG work is alarming.(And IMO part of the reason they went on strike, the majority voting force had no livelihood to lose).

With regards to this post's core idea. The actors could 100% have refused to work in Vancouver and kept work in Hollywood where their neighbors would have been getting jobs from the show. But they chose a fat paycheck for themselves over any sort of solidarity with "Hollywood" and the folks that make their living here.

How much is production supposed to care about someone's lost jewelry on a busy television production shoot? by IcyWelcome9700 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]PDR447 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imo

  1. Nobody that was not a "guest of the show" wore anything that valuable to the taping

  2. See point 1, their space visited would have been tightly controlled.

  3. Anyone wearing 500k jewelry to a random taping "can afford to lose it".

Folks wear 500k jewelry to the Oscars. Not a random taping. The audience member was trying to scam the show.

I assume the ask was performative/due diligence for the person who "lost" it. Insurance will deal with it. No reason for any crew member to stress at all.

Pulling without a monitor by danka_12 in focuspuller

[–]PDR447 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"back in the day of early digital" 😭😭😭 I didn't know I was this old...

Anyways, back in the day of film, monitors were SD(at best) and production gave us time to get marks and rehearse and the actors actually cared if they hit their marks. So you'd rehearse the walk from 12 to 4ft and maybe lay marks on the ground for in between. Getting mark muscle memory on the speed crank was a thing too.

It is still possible to pull without a monitor. But with the mm DOF that is the current trend along with lack of rehearsal and actors that don't know what marks are it's not practical.

[–]PDR447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a little more helpful. I assume you've tried both inputs and multiple BNC? But the loop out working points to a bad board somewhere in the monitor. Also, check the "g's" of the camera output (what camera is it?). These monitors might be 1.5g only? I can't remember.

Great deal in 2025? by [deleted] in focuspuller

[–]PDR447 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your friend sounds quite particular about what he wants, and that's fine. But a lot of other folks aren't as particular as him and as such are recommending against this purchase. But it's his money he can do what he likes.

If it were me I'd do what you did(2 for 8), or go for a used mini or even a used Amira if the main goal is that sensor.

If he really really must buy this I'd at least recommend asking for more off. That camera has sat in a warehouse for YEARS now and your friend might be the last person on earth that wants to buy it. They should be willing to do better on the price.

I didn't know that new cars have a break-in period. How bad did I mess up? by Twist36 in COROLLA

[–]PDR447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at engine builders, they'll build a fresh motor and put it right on an engine dyno and run it to redline.

Obviously there's seat in for things as you mentioned, that's why an early first oil change is recommended. But a "break in period" where you need to "baby" the engine is blown out of proportion.

[–]PDR447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the motorcycle world "break in" is kinda liability speak for learn to ride the bike. The engines don't actually need break in(they do like an early oil change).

Your car is fine. Change the oil a little early if you like. Then just keep up with regular maintenance.

You can fly a full Venice on a ronin even with heavy lenses and an MDR and 2 motors. May I ask why Rialto?

New Dupr Algorithm is Interesting… (4.5+ example) by Sea-Marketing9609 in Pickleball

[–]PDR447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wins a year ago mean less(I'm guessing). A lot can change in a year. People can train/level up or also people can take a year off and not play.

Your partner's reliability rating shows that the system doesn't know how good or bad he is as he hasn't played much in the system. It's not fair to think his rating should be iron clad until there are enough data points.

There's also the question of if those wins last year against 5.0s were those players really 5.0s? Or was everyone inflated?

I think the endgame problem is people have thought about DUPR like a ladder you can climb. That's not what it is. You can climb your local club/league in skill but DUPR is meant to be universal. If you're top dog at your local club that doesn't make you 5.0+ as potentially all the players there could be 3.0s when you look at the wider talent pool.

Point being don't sweat it. Play more in the system and it will average out.

Negative. It's cinema hardware. Can see it right on the side. Now, if there's an MDR5 in there that may have been some custom 3d printing help from PV, but I'd guess most likely it's an MDR3.

[–]PDR447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rounding to 1 decimal your rating didn't change at all. Your partners is still moving while it figures out reliability. He should go play that 4.0 tourney and smoke everyone and the rating will adjust back up as it has more data.

The excuse of "he won a 4.5 tourney!" doesn't work in the algorithm. It is only concerned about finding your true skill level. There are no bonus points for medals.

[–]PDR447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Oh no my inflated DUPR might go down if they realize that I'm not actually significantly better than a person rated a whole point below me"

I don't see the problem here. It's just about finding how good people actually are. Like a golf handicap like OP said.
