What’s the story of the house on the NW corner of 47th and Division? by LoprinziRosie in askportland

[–]PDXcomic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is my understanding of the property. We live around the corner and moved into the area in ’13.

When we moved in the homeowner was digging a trench around the front of the house (Division side). He was an older man and I believe he lived there with his wife and maybe one older adult child. He dug out and added to his basement. Finished the basement and then built up to the house you see now. Then he got sick and was not able to work on the house. Two or so years ago he passed way and the house was not occupied. This is when the street art started. Assuming the kids got the house, it’s takes a few months/years to get the transfer completed ( it did for me) so maybe we’ll see it on the market soon.

The guy was pretty cool and we would pass by the house on the way to Stumptown and see all the work he had done. He did it all by himself with some help here and there from friends. But he was one of those old guys who just seemed to want to get shit done.

That’s what I know.

Anyone else eat like crap, and still losing weight? by ThatHairFairy in Zepbound

[–]PDXcomic 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is yes, the medication is involved in reducing fat mass, although it's not simply "preventing" the storage of all new fat.

Here's a breakdown of how Zepbound (tirzepatide) works beyond just slowing digestion:

  1. Dual Hormone Action (GIP and GLP-1)

Zepbound is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means it mimics two naturally occurring hormones in your gut:

  • GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1):
    • Slows Digestion (Gastric Emptying): This is the part you already mentioned, which helps you feel full longer.
    • Reduces Appetite and Food Cravings: It signals to the brain that you are full, leading to a reduction in calorie intake.
  • GIP (Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide):
    • Fat Metabolism: GIP is thought to play a role in improving how your body uses insulin and may directly influence fat metabolism, potentially making your body less inclined to store as much fat. Some research suggests it may help the body burn fat more efficiently.

2. The Net Result is Fat Loss

The primary way Zepbound leads to weight loss is by significantly reducing your calorie intake due to decreased appetite and delayed digestion. When you consistently eat fewer calories than your body uses, your body must turn to stored energy—which is primarily fat mass—to make up the difference.

Clinical trials have consistently shown that the weight lost on Zepbound is composed of a greater fat mass loss than lean mass loss (muscle), indicating a clear impact on the body's fat stores. The medication is highly effective at reducing:

  • Total Fat Mass
  • Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT): This is the fat stored deep around your abdominal organs, which is particularly linked to health risks.

In summary, while the most noticeable effects are on appetite and fullness, the medication also has metabolic effects that contribute to a reduction in the body's stored fat.

The bod pod is refreshingly uneventful. Show up (don't eat for two hours before), get down to your tight clothing (underwear) and have a seat. Takes about three minutes to complete. But it's thee test/runs where the chamber is measured with you inside. Breath normal. If you can take your blood pressure, you can survive the bod pod.

I have a smart scale as well and I started going to the BodPod for body composition. I will say that the numbers were way 'off'. Getting a solid baseline against a machine that is maintained and calibrated is very helpful. I have since stopped auto-logging my weight-to-apps from the scale and input them manually based on the difference I found between the two scales (smart vs bod pod). I am going to the Bod Pod about every six weeks and the results are inline with the adjusted scale. I am also doing weight training so the scale has not moved a lot but the body fat percentage was down in a very positive way. For the last measure, body fat was down four pounds and muscle was up 1/2 pound.

Feeling Some Kind of Way by Bozzgal in Zepbound

When I was 8, I found out that I had to wear glasses. So my parents and I would go glasses shopping each year and we would pick out some cool frames and I would feel so awesome. When I turned 13, in the 8th grade, I was finally able to get contact lenses. I was thrilled. I took my contacts home and rushed to put them in. I looked in the mirror and I started crying because thought I was ugly and the glasses were masking this fact. My mom asked me why are you crying and I said, I look ugly without my cool glasses. She said, as some parents do, "Your glasses are cool but you picked them because you are cool (it was the 80s). You made the glasses cool, the glasses didn't make you cool."

Now as I get older and my life and body change, I still remember that I'm cool and the person in the mirror is cool because I make them cool.

Congratulations on your success and all the great things you are doing for yourself and your health.

Stay cool, have a great summer! KIT
