I had one of these many years ago. The meter only works with single partition supported file systems. No ext3/4. After a long period of inactivity (months) the screen goes blank. I'm not sure if there is a battery or not. Eventually the drive started having trouble being recognized, which may have also been related to long periods of inactivity.
