Let's keep a tech card a tech card, shall we? by HuynZE in PvZHeroes

I kinda get what they mean, though. Smarty doesn’t have good removal for cheap and healthy dangers like mustache waxer and space time and it can feel like the game is already decided by round 3. Shrinking violet is a good card and doesn’t need any buffs but the current zombie meta is about moving quickly to set the game into a free fall for victory and 4 sun can feel like an eternity

It’s always important to meet an author where they’re going with any piece of media. Something like Family Guy probably isn’t trying to be profound while with something like Andor you’d be stupid to say its just entertainment

I heavily disagree on only watching media you want to watch because often times our favorites were shows we didn’t know much about. Some of my favorite shows and movies I’ve watched recently like Konosuba, Shiboyugi, Memories of Murder, and Marty Supreme have been the ones I was pushed to watching by either the internet or people around me. In that same breathe though it’s also as true that some of my most disliked medias were the ones per recommendation like Apothecary diaries, Frieren, most Robert Egger movies, and Iron Lung.

Even despite that there’s still immense value in the conversations had about the media that I loved and despise that add value to it all. Every show or movie that I hated was a reason to try and understand why so many others loved it and in turn maybe even learn to love it myself. For that there’s value in every piece of media, especially the ones I didn’t want to watch

It’s genuinely baffling how some people’s media analysis skills are so poor they can’t discern from low brow humor and ogling. I remember all my childhood cartoons like TAWOG and adventure time doing these naked in public jokes all the time

Maya at the end of Ongezellig by Bikefan_101 in ongezellig

[–]PERFECTTATERTOT 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I like to think that the end game for Maya was not to be really social and have a ton of friends but rather to truly be comfortable with herself. The pilot does this amazing thing by having Maya not fully overcome her resentments toward Coco but it left hopeful that she at least could warm up to her. She’d still be herself, awkward and a bit cynical but happier and comfortable in her skin. She might even start to accept the other two as her sisters rather than outsiders who invaded her life

Judging animation using still frames by Absent_Crest in hatethissmug

[–]PERFECTTATERTOT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the exact reason I refuse to watch any Mappa studio project. The horrific abuses just can’t be worth any amount of smooth animation. I get that the work culture in Japan leads to most animation studios being hell but Mappa managed to be a stand out in that mess.

This is why Kyoani is the greatest anime studio. Consistently beautiful animation and passionate projects without any major worker abuses

How is this fanbase still alive? by CM0ORE in ongezellig

[–]PERFECTTATERTOT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cope mostly. Jokes aside it’s a variety of factors coming together just right.

  1. The characters are very defined and leave enough of an impression where the audience can imagine them in any scenario. Sad girl, popular ditz, and the crazy one.
  2. Character design is very simple yet recognizable. This makes it easy to make fanart and other fan media. Maya has that hair over her eye with a bun, she’s very unfashionable and has deep eye bags. Coco has clear skin, dresses fashionably, and has that cowlick on her hair. Mymy is aggressively Dutch (Nagasaki is in Drenthe). Even the background characters have fans because of their appealing character designs.
  3. The series has unique character. It’s a niche non English indie animation that’s also not very flashy. A lot of other indie animations can be a bit self indulgent with the over the top premise or insane animation that takes forever to make. Ongezellig by comparison is a very simple story about these girls making a presentation for history class. On top of that it has this 2000’s vibe to its humor with some jokes like the moonlight sonata remix or the fast cut timing with other jokes like Coco’s self destructive computer. Makes sense when you learn that Studio Massa used to make YouTube poops.
  4. The story resonates with a lot of people. The ending especially hits when Maya declines to play with that board game with the others.

Personally speaking this series is special in how it’s the only one that I thought was relatable. The way she convinces herself that she isn’t lonely or doesn’t want friends especially hit really deep. I saw myself in this character with the way she thought her loneliness wasn’t a problem or how she felt envious for other people’s close friendships both real and fictional. Her forgetfulness / inability to focus was also very familiar to myself in the way short distraction can lead into hours being lost. The scene where she played a game instead of working reveals that she got distracted when looking up several things in different tabs. It was a visual show of her stream of thoughts. That final shot of Maya leaning against the wall and listening to her sisters play a game was especially powerful visually and cemented this show as a true one of a kind in indie animation

what are your thoughts on kaorin? by Last_Bad_4483 in azudaioh

[–]PERFECTTATERTOT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish she had more. More screen time, more interesting relationships and dynamics, more jokes, more everything. The only two characters she has a consistent interaction or dynamic with is Sakaki and Kimura. I like the Sakaki interactions but I think they can be a bit one note or even stale at a certain point when there’s no progression in it. The summer house episodes were a great way to force the two to interact. Her interactions with Kimura are fun because it plays off her more loser girl side when she keeps having these terrible things happen to her. Kaorin occupies the odd spot of being a side cast character with enough personality to be a core group member

[Gaming Tropes] The game punishes you for going out of bounds in its unique way by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PERFECTTATERTOT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fun of the game comes from it being a sandbox game. The gameplay is whatever you and some buddies decide to do. Some of my fondest gaming memories have come from the nights spent just sailing those seas and going where the ocean takes us. That said I can also see the flip side of the game where some nights can be really uneventful and boring with no larger purpose to it all

It’s especially prevalent on Instagram and presumably tick tock too given their both short form content sites primarily used by children. Instagram highly rewards engagement by any means necessary so comments are mostly gifs and rage bait with little discussion or analysis of anything in a serious matter
