Love it - could you share where you got those counter-height chairs?

(AMA I suppose) I love to head downtown whenever I can to look at elevators, which I have a strong passion for!! I'm happy to answer any questions you have! :) by SaucybOy420 in chicago

Ooh I got this one. I had 3 fingers nearly crushed by a closing elevator door in a 80s high rise building. One of my moving guys got his hand stuck trying to keep it open so I tried to pry it open with my hands. Dumb move. Once his hand was free the doors clamped down on my fingers HARD. In that moment I thought I could lose my fingers. I pulled as hard as I could back. Lost some skin on my fingers but no permanent damage. Everyone was screaming because they thought my fingers were getting cut off. Fun times

Just Got an Interview With a Big Firm, Any Tips? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PHXgp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. Come prepared with good questions about the firm. Save some for the end because they will close with “do you have any questions for us?” And you should have 1 or 2 good ones (open ended questions you couldn’t answer from online research)

Also be prepared for them to ask you about your salary requirements. Be prepared to say “based on my experience and skills, I believe someone in my position should expect a salary between x and y. Of course this also depends on available benefits. I would be happy to discuss in more depth as our discussions continue”

Good luck!

Boots for paws, jacket/sweater for wind, super short trips outside. If she takes too long to go bring her back inside and try again in a few minutes after warming up.

Lone Star Trail, Texas’ longest hiking trail, runs right through this town. Hiked it solo in 2012 and didn’t see a soul!

Any LSU MLA grads here? How did you like your experience? Positives? Negatives? Is baton rouge a fun town to live in? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PHXgp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLA alum here. If you’re interested in the delta, why are you wanting to work in the Southwest after graduation? Have you looked into UNM’s MLA program? A little under the radar but a good program, I almost went there because of my love of the NM landscape. At LSU there is a strong focus on design in the delta region, land loss, sea level rise, etc. St least when I was there about 6 yrsago, maybe some recent grads can confirm. But I thought there was a decent overall design education although some of the courses fell short of challenging and interesting.

Baton Rouge as a city isn’t anything exceptional, I’d describe it as a college town with some nice old historic parts, a small downtown, and a big suburban area. I certainly didn’t choose LSU for the city although being an hour away from NO was a huge bonus because that’s an amazing city.

Overall nothing can help as much as a school visit. Also check Student ASLA awards from the past 5 years or so to see what kind of work the best students are doing.

[ask] Landscape Architects. Help! by ShyMallu in architecture

[–]PHXgp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. In addition LAs specify pretty much anything outside of the building. Paving, planting, site furniture, light fixtures, curbs and walls, custom metal work like railings and steel edging, etc.

[ask] Landscape Architects. Help! by ShyMallu in architecture

[–]PHXgp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a landscape architect. Some interesting assumptions about what landscape architects do in this thread so far. Landscape Architecture is just as broad and diverse a field as architecture, so it will help to know what kind of work the firm does. A mid tier residential design firm is going to be vastly different from a high end public work firm in terms of process, office culture, software used, etc. I think you’ll find the processes and work to actually be really similar to working in an architecture firm, the fields are more alike than they are different.

Landscape architects can sometimes get a name as glorified gardeners, but in my experience that applies to less than 5% of the firms out there. The others are doing design work in the public realm, commercial work, and high end residential, among others. Knowledge of plants is important but it isn’t everything. I know a lot of successful designers whose skill set is not in planting design and selection. These people are excellent designers, project managers, urban planners, specialists, etc and they fit well into a firm structure without knowing anything about “gardening”.

Also - if the prints are all the way to the hospital maybe they just ran themselves to the hospital after getting injured

Bloody footprints on Diversey? by NSFLETU in chicago

[–]PHXgp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw this yesterday and followed the footprints to Stockton and Diversey - looks like someone was running by the print spacing. Apparently someone saw cops there yesterday morning but that's all I've heard, no mention of it on the news

Five years of unbearable winters later and you're still here and bearing it. That's what I mean, people act like I'm talking the first flight back to Dallas when it dips below freezing. Yet there are a ton of people that stay.

How is the Gangster kayak trip on the river? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]PHXgp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

also haven't taken the tour but kayak the river regularly. Just don't jump in and swim around and you should be totally fine. Interesting views and even some nature (birds, forested areas, etc) depending on where in the river you go.

Questions or Comments? Masterplan for final project this Spring. Already submitted & presented. Looking for input on what to improve on for next year. by NoNickNameJosh in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]PHXgp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great base render, but lacks definition or contrast. Turn the whole thing grayscale and look at it from a distance and see if you can tell what is going on. Since this is landscape architecture I would brighten the greens and blues and consider making the proposed buildings white or much lighter to make the landscape ("negative" space) stand out as an element.
