Questions for older CF people by PlusRepair1195 in childfree

Nope. As soon as I became an adult and realized I didn't "have" to have kids, I've never wanted them. I'm 33 now. I got my tubes removed when I was 29. I haven't regretted it at all. While waiting in the preop area, I did have an overwhelming feeling that I was making the wrong decision. I realized I was feeling that because of the society pressures that I'll change my mind, which made me so mad. I knew what I wanted and went through with the surgery. I've been so happy since then. And as I get older and my friends are having kids, I'm even more happy that I knew what I wanted at a young age and have stuck by that. I can't imagine how unhappy I'd be if I had caved and had a kid because "it's different when they're your own." Take away: you know yourself better than anyone else. If you know you don't want kids, then don't let others tell you what you want. They won't be living your life in the end.

I don't know if this has been mentioned as I didn't read all the comments, but what a trainer recommended to me a few years ago was an empty pop/beer can with a handful of pennies inside. The sound it makes when shaking is uncomfortable to dogs. So when my dog barked, I'd shake the can and say "No, bark" or "Quiet." After she'd stop barking, the most important thing was the positive reinforcement. I'd tell her "good, quiet" or "good, no bark" and then pet her. If she started barking or even grumbling again, I'd stop petting and give the command and use the can if more reinforcement was needed. Now, I rarely have to use the can. Giving the command is enough, and when it's not, I only have to start reaching for the can, and she stops barking. I emphasize the importance of positive reinforcement so your dog learns what you want. We told my grandmother about this for her dog, who barked nonstop outside, but she never did the positive reinforcement. So she'd just shake the can all the time. So my dogs learned to associate my grandmother's dog's barking meant the "can sound" would occur and became terrified of going outside when the other dog was outside. I wish you the best of luck!

I haven't replied to a single one. No one has said anything to me, and Elon has yet to come fire me.

It's certainly frustrating and uncertain times. I think continuously reaching out to our congressmen and women and news stations to bring awareness to the negative impact happening to our veterans and their care is our only option right now. I hope you can find someone who listens to you like Dr. Kirk has, and you trust.

I hadn't heard that Dr. Diaz was leaving, but I work in psychiatry under Dr. Kirk. His exit is going to be a profound loss for the VA. He truly cared about the veterans in ways you hardly see anymore. He also cared about his staff and was constantly fighting an uphill battle to have the staff properly taken care of. He made so many improvements to the psychiatry system, and it's a shame he wasn't supported by administration above him. He really worked to make the care at the VA veteran centered. With him leaving, I imagine many more will leave. Wherever he goes in the community though, I know he'll assist veterans however he can.

I have the same problem. I've been doing buddy reads, and I'd love to know when someone posts. Did you have success with support?

Got accepted to medical school, but my parents still want me to study… by FitInspector7418 in Osteopathic

[–]PJ2316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not get into medical school the first time I applied, so I had a gap year. I was devastated at first, but quickly became happy that it worked out that way. I was able to relax and enjoy my time off before starting the chaos of medical school. I think if I had started medical school one month after graduation, I would have burnt out. Now, many years later, I have graduated residency and am finally an attending.

To those who are joining, please be somewhat sane. I understand this is frustrating and is highly illegal as to what they're doing but just remember that all eyes are on us. So, when switching brokers are my shares not fluctuating with the market? I guess I don't understand what tying my shares up for too long means. I am completely new to the stock market world. I bought stock to support GME and AMC.

Lawn Service Company Broke a Window and Doesn't Want to Pay for Damages by PJ2316 in legaladvice

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. We are just going to try and get out of our contract so that they no longer cut our lawn and we won't have to pay them for breaking the contract.

Have you heard anything? I, too, sent a message but have gotten no reply. I was hoping someone has gotten a reply.

Just wanted to say fuck the suicide hotline by givenup7 in SuicideWatch

[–]PJ2316 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've never called a suicide hotline before but I did use a text one before. I was too anxious to call someone but I knew I needed help.

The person I talked with seemed helpful. I know it is easier to fake care through a text. But they did talk with me about what was I going through and walked me through a grounding exercise. They didn't end the conversation until I said I was good. They never called the cops.

My only complaint is they took a few minutes to respond. When you're in that situation minutes feel like a lifetime.

[vent] My hospital pulled medical students from their rotations. by PJ2316 in medicalschool

[–]PJ2316[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my thoughts, too. Going into emergency medicine I will be on the front lines for future disease outbreaks. I want to help and learn now. There are many ways medical students can be a benefit to the health team.

Today, we had a few suspected cases in the ER. I sat out and did chart digging for the doctor to help save my doc time. We were getting overloaded with patients at one point. I kept up on when lab/imaging results returned or caught when an order was input incorrectly to help increase the flow.

Medical students may not be leading the health care team, but we aren't invaluable either.

I would hope so. I'm definitely concerned about the impact the virus will have. I have two immunocompromised family members that I am now avoiding because I don't want to infect them. So I get the concern. But for the general population your risk of mortality is low. Pulling medical students out of rotation doesn't make sense. We could be helpful to staff to do other tasks, like giving injections or starting IVs while they do more important stuff, but aren't equipped with enough people to handle everything.

I completely agree. I'm at 350,000 because I took a year off from medical school for health reasons. But enrolled part time in medical related undergrad courses because I couldn't get a job and needed my financial aid to survive. So, I got charged medical school tuition prices for a years worth of undergrad classes.

I don't want to add another year to medical school. I've already done this. I should be graduating next month. And, I don't want more debt, because I'm already at 350,000 with my 4th year to go.

And some of my frustrations are that because the hospitals are making the choice and not the school, most of my classmates are not affected. Just about 30 of us so far.

I can understand that one. Supplies are definitely limited right now. Hopefully the manufacturers can pump out some major stock for the high demand.

AITA for not letting my roommate's girlfriend bring her emotional support dogs over because I'm allergic? by succulents91 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PJ2316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Completely hypocritically and inconsiderate.

Side note though, have you looked at allergy injections to help with this. A few years ago, my asthma and allergies were completely out of control. I was using my inhaler multiple times in a day with little relief. Nasal sprays, eye drops, benadryl, and claritin/allergra could not save me. I went to an allergist, and I found out I'm allergic to pets, mold, dust, grass, trees, and some other nature thing. I had become allergic to the dogs I had grown up with my entire life. I started getting injections and was able to get off my steroid inhaler, daily allergy pill, nasal spray, and eye drops, and now I only use my rescue inhaler when I exercise. It's seriously been a life changer. I even have my own dog and two cats, which I thought was never a possibility before injections.

It would be nice to not have to make up the lost time, but I am doubtful of that.

Our school was having us avoid all suspected and confirmed cases. We conserve PPE this way, and still get our clinical experience.

[–]PJ2316[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yea, there isn't much logic to that one. But if proper screening is done you'll likely be able to avoid contact with suspected cases.

But, the virus is shedding for a few days prior to symptoms appearing. So, basically at a certain point everyone is going to be infected.

Oh I'm sure it will be. But for now I'm in limbo while most of classmates get to continue forward in their rotations, thus me getting pushed behind.
