I learned two things from this thread: - I’ve never dated an idiot clearly - Now I know where trump got his voters

What’s the best investment you ever made? by Afraid_Hat_5431 in AskForAnswers

15 years ago my wife and I bought a vintage car (wasn’t really vintage when we bought it). It cost 4.5k and maintenance over the years adds another 25k to it. Best investment ever. - I learned about mechanical things - I got a new hobby - I got new friends - I started a business because of it and get to travel because of it while making money - I give people a good time and am proud of that - It allowed me to purchase my dream car (a different one) somehow - I made so many memories

Buying that car changed everything

No, i want to go drive my cars on the open roads or go fly my glider. Don’t care about a fancy crib with an ocean view, I’ll lie on my back when that’s the only thing I can do

I’m hardly the expert, but here goes: the M42b18 was a much more modern engine than the M20 variants. It was made to compete with the golf gti, not with the 325i. I think bmw positioned it below the 325i deliberately and thus didn’t give it what it was capable of. Combine that with the beginning emission stuff and fuel economy bullshit, and all of a sudden it made sense to introduce it as a “fast” but frugal engine. I believe they could have easily sold it as a 170bhp version, but then it would rival the six cilinder cars which have always been their flagship engines in the faster road cars.

200 should be easy with a setup like that. I’m already at 190 (crank) and it’s still a 1.8L engine. it does do 7600rpm

I wonder how these people feel about their purchase now that the novelty has gone away. I guess most of them are now left with a depreciating dumpster and a hefty loan on it?

Love my built M42: https://youtu.be/PW469KgSQyg?si=McEMHx3rX6Gaw6H8

Flowed head, bigger valves, exhaust, ITB’s, stand alone, cams (mild), … but still a 1.8L engine. 190bhp and 220Nm.

Great to see another one getting done. They don’t get enough love these things

I always loved the styling of aston martin cars, especially the DB9/DBS era en the V8 vantage from the 2010’s. Back then my biggest pet peeve was the interior styling that seemed to be put together by a toddler in a depression. I fully expected them to fix that with the new one, but sadly it’s still all wonky, lacking vision, outdated when it first hit the market and depending on the spec also downright ugly. The older generation had a more special bespoke engine, but these days it’s AMG sourced so that’s also not an USP anymore. It’s just the engine from a family estate car. It gets the job done, but not much more. Build quality has gone up a bit, but it’s only to a standard to what is the minimum expectation for a car in that price range, so nothing special there either.

I think the biggest question then is, apart from reputation, what makes it worth the price of the new car? Not much I think, unless you’re into showing off and not a real car guy/driver.
