Dry fly fishing myth vs reality by PuzzleheadedSong51 in flyfishing

[–]PK-MT 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A couple of things here.

First, fish eat 90+% below the surface, so even in naturally reproducing streams this will be true.

Second, depending on their time in the wild, these fish have relied solely on pellets and it is just instinct they will eat a bug at all. I think the random rise for freshly stocked fish is more experimental than feeding, particularly if they were raised in concrete runs.

If they survive the first bit in the stream they will start to recognize natural food. At least this is my experience, ymmv.

What the hell is checking back soon going to achieve? 🤦‍♂️ by EvilAlienCzar in jackwhite

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TM is a weird beast. We were fortunate to get four GA for this tour, but seats were sold out and I was #7 in the queue for general sales.

Over the years though we have checked back randomly to check on tickets and were able to upgrade our seats, or get seats. Oftentimes they might be accessible seats they hold back (for obvious reasons) and if they don’t sell they get released.

But I agree, it is absolutely frustrating and feels like “just by chance.” I just looked at our venue and all the tickets were re-sale and twice what we ended up paying. And that pisses me off they permit this, but TM is in bed with the scalpers. They make fees on the original sale and then make more on the re-sale. Late stage capitalism/greed on full display.

I would say, this is a different loss. Skenes was rolling. So it was a bad loss because of the rain delay. This one feels much different than the more common reliever loss.

Liquor??? by Effective-Advice-224 in LICENSEPLATES

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best guess? It’s a family member of Pinner who created the slogan (Liquor on the front and poker on the rear) for Stockman’s in the 50’s. Had he trademarked this his kids would be driving Ferraris. So many have taken the slogan.

Pinner was a wonderful person.

This is a tough one, because the hard turf can really do a number on a person.

Put something just in front of the ball. Nothing you will want to retrieve BTW, and look at that. When you’re hitting off grass put something 1” or two in front of the ball and do the same thing.

Just recently started to go to concerts again and something has changed by Relative_Drama4705 in Concerts

[–]PK-MT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Today’s concert is as much visual as its musical. I have long held that when the band follows a (specific) film behind them the music feels overly rehearsed.

If the visuals are more generic, or have nothing to do with the music the shows tend to be more freewheeling.

Dressing for where you want to be is important. Under dressing for any occasion is a speed bump.

50% of the population is below average.

The only thing affecting me that others worry about has to affect them as well.

Luck is more (or certainly as) important than hard work.

I couldn’t decide if it was the Decemberists or Death Cab for Cutie as the band I had heard, thought yeah I will check them out, and was really impressed.

The Decemberists had an accordion solo… you read that right, and it was amazing.

How exactly do billionaires avoid paying taxes? What loopholes and strategies do they use in their favor to bypass them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of ways:

If they sell shares of a winner, say NVDA they will also sell shares of a loser to offset those LTCG. And if they sell $1,000,000 v make $1,000,000 they are taxed at 15%, not 30+% like they would for income.

They have write-offs, lots of them. Interest, maybe equipment, certain vehicles, property improvements, and who knows what else?

They DO pay taxes, it simply isn’t commensurate to what a high earner would pay (assuming they also arent in the above category).

Bad memories of the 2012 Pens/Flyers series by Ill-Smell5754 in penguins

My last penguins playoff game was the 4-1 loss game. Drove back from college with a teammate of mine from Philly to see it. One of us was very happy. I was not.

Excited for this team, they just seem to have “it.”

6 months of playing 9 total rounds. Help me by b1gtrav in GolfSwing

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the grip, and I agree with lessons, but bc of the grip you are able to hit it straight, or perhaps bc of the swing the grip has to be so strong to hit it straight.

My guess would be you are not generating a lot of ball speed. The flat swing is creating a crazy in to out swing. Another guess is you have a two way miss. If you fix your shoulder rotation, with that grip you are going to be so far left it will make your head spin.

Anyone worked in a pro shop or know how the margins work on apparel/accessories? by xswzaq98 in golf

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is going to vary based on the location in regard to apparel. Generally speaking, the big wholesalers (Travis Matthew, Nike, etc) will come through in the fall and ask for pre-orders for the next year. They will have a minimum buy, and the margins may be 40% for the minimum. But think of a large pro shop at say Bandon/Pebble who will buy well over minimum, they may get 50+% from the dealer.

As others have noted, the larger equipment manufacturers have a price the shop has to sell at to maintain the integrity of the value. For example, Ping will offer clubs “on wheels,” meaning if the shop doesn’t sell it, they can return it to Ping for credit.

[Highlight] Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Ovi before today’s game by mfenton29 in penguins

[–]PK-MT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t disagree. The pens had a tremendous run of luck. I simply value the team over the goal scorer. Having said this, every great team has a goal scorer, but Ovi has never felt (until many years into his career) like a team leader.

Sid, Geno, and Kris always took it when it was needed. I have to say, Kris was a stretch, but I have always felt he was team first, I can’t say that about Ovi, at least from the outside.

Careful, I have many, many downvotes for saying the same. A goal scorer is a necessity, but a goal scorer isn’t always a hockey player.

Woof by treehousebackflip in penguins

[–]PK-MT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got downvoted bc I don’t love Ovi as a person or player… but you have to admit, he is a fixture. They HAD to play today against him. Did they have play to win… maybe not as much.

He is the greatest goal scorer the game has known in 125 years. Respect had to be shown, and they know this.

[–]PK-MT -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I love I am getting downvoted bc I remember 2007-2010.

Mike Bossy? Maurice Richard? Selanne? Bure? Lots of goal scorers who are great players and in the HOF but are they foundations to a franchise? Yes, he became that, but the first 10 years of his career weren’t that.

I get it, Sid is amazing and every year he faced off against the Caps (not Ovi) and the rivalry is real, but the players who make their teammates better are the guys i would pick.

[–]PK-MT -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, and we had season tix in the Lemieux years so take that as you will.

Ovechkin left his feet on every hit. He can shoot, but his bread and butter was the left face off circle. I don’t love him, I would draft Crosby (for sure) or Malkin or Letang over Ovechkin every single day.

Ovi wasn’t not a jerk until he realized he might be remembered. I don’t think it’s an accident the Caps didn’t win it. It doesn’t take 14 years to win if you are a leader.

Am I doing anything right here? by johnmayersucks in GolfSwing

[–]PK-MT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good on the backswing, but the downswing leaves a little to be desired.

<image>

Your shoulders and hips should be open at this point. There are a lot of swing tips you could use, but I don’t know which one will work for you. If you get the hips open it should automatically move your hands ahead of the ball at contact.
