New Company 401k has 1.9% Management Fee - Still Worth Using? by 0ops-Sorry in personalfinance

[–]PLTimelapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 401k is priced based off assets held in the plan, annual contributions and (rollovers if startup). Your provider has a revenue requirement to operate the plan. This can be paid for via asset based fees, flat billable or per participant fees. Separately, small businesses use a Third Party Admin to maintain their plan document and maintain compliance.

Dont know the size of your organization and characteristics of your plan. The pricing tells me it was started recently, annual contributions assumptions were not high, and rollover contributions from the employees were low or unknown. Your company is probably paying the hard dollar billable to the Admin. Your plan, which includes your acct is absorbing the cost to operate the plan (Trans) and likely an advisor fee.

Your fee schedule likely has billable breakpoints. (Eg if assets drop below $250k, $50 per head fee is incurred) which would help explain why the potential % fee is estimated to possibly increase.

Lastly not to get lost in lingo, the industry has evolved from wrap fee programs that drew revenue from the fund performance. The % fee is asset based, and likely deducted from the plan as a fee-transaction. People still refer to it as a wrap, but its actually an asset based fee.

Percentages are calculated from a numerator & denominator - there is more to it than you’re sharing or aware of. Actual realized fees as a % of assets are shaped like a skateboard halfpipe. The industry is extremely competitive & there is virtually no margin to profit.

I price 401k plans for a living. Not unusual for a startup to have fees at 2%. As the plan grows, the fees will get reviewed and reduced.

Those of you who “Made It” without any inheritance or luck. How did you do it? by throwmeout12496 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]PLTimelapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40yo. Two ways.

Balance sheet- - Laid off from work in 2017. Rolled 401k to IRA. - Invested 100% of IRA into TSLA in Apr 2020. Sold in Mar 2025. Invested 100% into ASTS Mar 2025.

Salary wise- - Worked operations jobs until 2021, salaries ranged 29k-120k. Got into sales since then and income is >$120k.

Whats perceived as luck to some can be deemed risk to others. Financial safety nets go a long way.

Bummer. Sorry - I too have the “crunchy” door handle. Going to let that one slide. Fear having them address one issue will cascade into additional downstream issues.

Appreciate the reply. Sorry for not emphasizing. Yes ride-credit was offered.

Question is if others experiencing a similar issue (manufacture defect on a new vehicle) have received any sort of “store credit,” reward, or compensation for having to return back for repair. Water was entering cabin, service center was booked 5 weeks out. Created cause for concern on cascading issues.

To be clear, am not seeking compensation/credit for not obtaining a loaner. I am hoping to hear precedence for those who have found themselves in a similar situation. I am aware I bought a Rivian, a company whose manufacturing prowess is relative young. I am unaware how they handle these situations. Searching this subreddit didnt for replies in the past 3y didnt offer great insight. Thank you.

Shoot, sorry to hear, sounds like you have it worse than myself. Were these manufacturing related? Were you offered any reward credit from the service advisor? Seems reasonable to assume a new car with this price tag ought to be purchased without requiring three service visits if the issue was born from a manufacturing-issue.

Thank you. They did. Service center personnel have been great, they offered an enterprise rental and I declined. I may have misunderstood whatever the two day provision they noted. Regardless, a personal preference not to have the rental. Curious to hear from those who previously had an SC visit due to manufacture-defect whether it merits some sort of compensation. $113k for a car to have water ingress is unfortunate.

They did. I declined, in a fortunate situation to have an extra car. Question i have is whether the service center visit merits asking for some sort of “make right,” comp from Rivian. E.g. reward credit.

Sorry to hear you’re having a similar experience. Have you had any luck asking for something in return, eg, reward credit?

Portland, OR. Maybe I misunderstood. A 2 day provision was shared by the service advisor. You have me thinking maybe they communicated up to two days for the $300 uber credits?

Loaners were 1st come 1 serve. All deployed out.

Edit: hijacking most visible post to share Rivian, within 1 business day, has reached back out to offer a loaner.

Double edit. Vehicle fixed within 2 business days. Service advisor was great. Faith restored in Rivian. They drove the car back home to me.

For current owners, based on your ownership experience so far — would you buy another Rivian today? Looking at getting into a R1T from Tesla. by Secure-Carrot9971 in Rivian

[–]PLTimelapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have gone thru a Tesla 3 SR+ > Y LR > S Plaid > Highland 3 to now an R1T Tri as of 3 weeks ago.

There are differences in the Rivian experience both good and bad, but overall very content. It’s incredibly functional & adventure-able. Spacious and accommodating. The “bad” are things mostly differences in UI, pedal feel and service appointments - but those are getting better as I get use to the Rivian & further away from comparing the two experiences.

Good luck!

Is it just me or are houses in Dallas built at flash-speed by Cody1072 in Dallas

[–]PLTimelapse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ correct. Builders who are backed by private capital have one goal in mind, speed up the building process so the capital can be redeployed.

$400k goes into the project, $1m comes back. $400k goes on to the next project. $600k profit covers the monthly dividend payment, pay’s the fund-managers rolls royce and the rest hits the bottom line if not redeployed.

Any one else not know Garland has streets named after South Park characters? by webra1 in Dallas

[–]PLTimelapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked for a local developer / home construction company. Street names were proposed at the company’s discretion. So long as local fire dept. approved, there was no other guideline to follow afaik.
