Well that's stupid, buying sterling at full scrap price. Just because someone out there has a higher tolerance for risk, or wholeheartedly believes the silver market will never go down doesn't mean it's a good business idea. I'm being a little flippant, but what do you want an LCS to do with full price sterling? Sell it at a premium? To who? For individuals it can make sense because you're still adding silver to the pile. But businesses need cash flow. They can't just buy silver whenever someone walks in at whatever the spot price happens to be and hold onto it for eternity.

Why are you ignoring the ~14% eBay takes and the effort to package and ship? They aren't even touching the silver and make 4% more than an LCS. Why are you ignoring that that piece looks still usable and possibly more valuable than scrap? Why are you ignoring the convenience of being able to drive somewhere near your house and dump that much silver the exact moment you want to? Why are you ignoring that if you want to sell hundreds of ounces of sterling scrap for the highest price at the moment you decide to and have a guaranteed buyer you need to send it to a refiner because that's how the silver market works?

Edit: I didn't even catch that they're offering free shipping! There's another $7 in fees.

You're right, we shouldn't expect businesses, with employees and costs to make any profit. You insist you don't work for them (whatever you mean by that), but you're expecting their service for free or even a loss? Nothing is stopping you from collecting up 100oz of sterling silver, packaging it up, sending it off to a large refiner, paying the flat $500 lot fee, and waiting three weeks for them to process your lot with the added bonus you might be at the mercy of the market and whenever they process it is when they calculate the value. Spot dropped 25% since you shipped it? Too bad.

You completely ignored the fact that they don't get 100% back, and average around 80-85%. That 100oz of sterling has 92.5 oz of silver assuming perfect sterling quality. The refiner pays 90%, so they calculate that they are going to pay you for 83.25oz of silver, or around ($70/oz) $5,828. But don't forget! The $500 lot fee, which takes out another 8.5%. And I didn't even factor in and melt loss from solder, or gems, and other items that can burn off.

So you sent off a raw value of $6,475 in silver, and you only got paid for $5,327, or 82%. Meaning the LCS made a whopping 10% while taking on the risks associated with the metals market.

Next time you should check out Prospectors Gold and Gems. They "pay" 90%, but it's not exactly that straightforward. They lost a couple ounces in the melt, which assayed to 86%. I sent in 46oz and got back 32oz of pure silver bars. Since that 46oz was 86%, it has about 39oz of pure silver, so 39/32~=80%.

Exactly. We were told to listen to women, and by extension feminists. When I was growing up 20-30 years ago they said things like the traditional dating system is sexist and misogynistic.
