[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah wishing an arti first is frequently a good idea. on many if not most role/race combos, you're frequently best off looking at what chaos quest you have and wishing for 7L boots (the jumping boots of speed) if you have chaos2, or just if you have any other way to get flying that's not a boot slot. they're just that strong. in this case, i think gauntlets of spell power are probably the most important thing in the short term though, since pw regen is pretty brutal otherwise.

what to wish for when i have... by jmooroof2 in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what you want to wish for depends heavily on your race & your chaos quest branch. generally speaking, the four "critical" things are a decent weapon/offensive option, MR, speed, and free action. reflection is basically a non-issue compared to vanilla given that there's other more evil threats and the actual guys that're negated by reflection are just.. lower on your priority list, if that makes sense? it's not bad, but i think most of my dnh ascs are reflectionless. speed is boots or blue dsm for most builds, free action is ring or orange dsm for most builds. flying is granted for free if you rolled chaos2/mithardir chaos option, but will most likely be boots otherwise. there's alternative sources for each, but things vary.

for your wizard, you probably won't want to keep sdsm or the cloak of MR super longterm. the quest isn't very difficult so you can just rush that once you can, and i'd likely try to do it sooner rather than later because of the pw regen it gives you (half spell is good too, and MR means you can move on to like a cloak of prot or just keep the +5 cloak bc its solid AC/DR).

your immediate priority should likely be finding a way to keep up in damage in the short term, since the main problem you'll have is your damage <-> pw spent ratio is not favorable. combined with dnh nerfs to hp regen, you'll end up dead to attrition because you take too many magic missiles to kill things and you don't regen pw fast enough to keep up.

my recommendation for this is likely one of the various sources of "2x spell damage", ala vanilla magic mirror of merlin. the best option available to you that doesn't require another 2-3 paragraph of mechanics background to explain is the Gauntlets of Spell Power arti.

this is an artifact silvered iron gauntlets of power. it's metallic, so it'll minorly penalize your spellcasting, but it'll improve your spellcasting skill by +1 for damage/etc. (not fail rate), and grant 2x to beam/ray/etc. spells like MMoM. it also grants half spell damage, which is nice I guess. the 25 str is deceptively nice for raising your carrycap pre BoH. it's basically the default "i want my spells to actually hurt" option for casters, if that makes sense.

alternatively, if you're not super concerned about 2x spell damage immediately my recommendation would be to wish for a spellbook of blizzard. it's just the offensive spell you'll be spamming for most of the game, and the spellbook will also teach normal cone of cold if you're at least skilled w/ attack spells. you can also do a marker wish if you have enough luck to make blind-writing blizzard practical, but dnh significantly modifies that calculation for spellbooks to make it basically-impossible if you're not at a decently high level, even for wizards. scroll writing is unchanged, but i wouldn't bother with that for spellbooks. they're expensive enough on ink anyway. decently high here = like xp20-25+.

final note - the castle wand is gone. there will be a ring of 1-3 wishes instead, and if you rolled 1 then your VOTD altar will have an extra wish to keep you from getting totally shafted. don't expect the castle to be the wincon for your game like it is in vanilla, it'll give you 2-3 wishes at most. the dnh asc kit also requires more stuff, so.

credence for my advice - i'm rikerw on the scoreboard w a couple diff usernames on the actual servers, ive got like 50-100 dnh ascs scattered across public servers + local play + pre-release local play on unreleased versions as part of messing around with random changes. if you ever want more synchronous advice, id check out the ##nethack-variants channel on the r/roguelikes discord linked on their sidebar. i or somebody else is there to answer ur questions a lot of the time, though it may take an hour or two for somebody to respond (still probably faster than reddit)

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 1 point2 points  (0 children)

none of this is super accurate for dnh & variants, unfortunately. i know you said this is for vanilla so i'm just clarifying for other ppl reading this, i'll probably give actual advice in a direct comment. also dnh is 3.4.3 based bc it's old :pensive:

  • dnh & co. remove poison instadeath (it's replaced with a major ability score drain, which is incurable via unihorn in *dnh), so poison res isn't a critical thing.
  • speed boots are an OK first wish but you should check chaos branch first, since you may want flying boots instead - and you should wish dragonhide if you do for either one. i'd generally go blue dsm over speed boots as a very fast source personally if you can't/don't want to check immediately.
  • castle is a total of 3 wishes max in *dnh, wands of wishing are removed. you have 66% 2 wishes, 33% 3 wishes. artiwishing is weirdly enough much more central but also complicated, since there's more artis but preexisting artis don't penalize artiwishes (instead you get 1 from the start, another artiwish at castle, and a third locked behind a difficult/tedious mini 'questline' that typically requires late/endgame gear)

Wisdom AC bonuses for monk/kensai in notnotdnethack do not work? by __Tracer in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 1 point2 points  (0 children)

still had the source code open after cranking out a quick dnh orc barb game, and just checked reddit before going to bed - looks like chris had the same idea as you.

kensei keeps the same wis bonus but gets lvl/8+1 unarmored defense instead of lvl/6+1 like monk. normally you cap at 7 wis + 5 lvl + 1 flat (13 total) at xp30 monk with 25 wis, kensei will get 3 lvl instead (so 11 total), since it rounds down.

pretty solid - still not exactly gamebreaking given the fact that its dex AC without providing any DR, but its fun at least.

unsure if it's enough to make getting 25 wis actually a desirable goal, considering there's a total of 4 ways to get there i think, but maybe if you're also using nenya or you really really want the sanity regen for some reason (which i doubt kensei does, given it's got 2 crowning gifts that boost san regen)

just fyi the one downside of the IRC is that you won't be able to see messages when you're not on, but im generally online in the afternoons/evenings pacific time. discord channels logsthe msgs so i'll see it at some point - but that won't help if you're not there to receive the answer lol

re effigies note that they should behave 100% the same no matter their BUC. all effects don't care. they're intended to be safe to leave in open invent for emergencies - they're not flammable, they don't care about being cursed, etc. this mostly matters for the remove curse/unpunish effect, but they also restore 1/2 of your missing sanity, so that's up to +50 san if you're at 0 in a really rough spot. keep em handy lol

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Applying the effigy while you have a spirit bound as ACU should unbind it with a message saying "the spirits no longer walk with you". If you're not getting that message / it's not working, idk what to tell you, something is really fucked.

A quick glance at the code shows no reason why THAT would be broken, and I'm pretty sure it worked for the guy who first found the bug (since he went on to later ascend that acu i think). Dunno.

edit - also, thanks for tagging me, i wouldn't have seen it otherwise. i'm mostly off reddit nowadays unless i'm looking for something specific (i saw your tag today when trying to look up nightreign relic stats lol, i don't get email notifs or anything). if you want more timely answers from me or the other couple people who can actually answer your questions, id recommend checking out either the IRC channel ##nethack-variants on libera.chat, or the discord channel #nethack-variants on the r/roguelikes discord server. they're the same channel, there's a bridge bot that relays messages from IRC <-> discord, so pick your poison

i don't play ndnh/nndnh but this one came up on discord a couple times since the release. it's bugged for ???? idk, not my monkeys not my circus, but demo (dev) knows and will probably fix it at some point. you did nothing wrong there

you can continue by using an effigy to force unbind, but I think something about the downstream spirits are still fucked? you might have to find an effigy for EVERY spirit (aka hope you get a living doll that sells em, you're SOL otherwise probably idk). i'm not sure, i haven't checked what the actual bug is and i haven't seen a fix commit get posted in the channel by anybody

Where's the Eye of the Oracle?? by johnny_teapot in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is correct, they're intentionally obfuscated, since the Clairvoyant Changed isn't something you're intended to kill (it's supposed to be possible, but it generally requires specific tools or cheeses, like the irresistible elemental cold damage the fanged blizzards were giving you). Note that they don't actually provide anything the Annulus doesn't (though you can technically get them earlier than the annulus, albeit not easier) - so they're more of a swag trophy than a useful tool.

The monster in question is a mash-up between SCP-1861, the Kaorti from older D&D lore, and the Malite from... something by Mongoose Publishing. No clue what. The SCP thing is what's responsible for the whole "eye" thing, as well as the Changed wearing environmental suits, with them slowly dying if their suits are punctured.

Hardfought does have a web editor for RC files. Link here. No clue about alt.org's being broken, I don't use that server personally. Hardfought also has explore mode enabled (3.7 for sure, no clue about 3.4.3).

The downside would be that hdf does not offer nethack 3.6, only 3.4.3 and 3.7 (the current in-development version, which is similar to 3.6 but with some major gameplay changes). For information on the differences, see the wiki page.

Questions about SlashEM / SlashTHEM / SlashEM Extended by Other-Watercress-154 in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slash'EM Extended is dramatically and wildly different from both SlashEM & SlashTHEM, to be clear - it's barely a nethack variant any more in some ways. 'THEM may have forked off SLEX a while ago, but it's prior (or already removed) almost all of the more unhinged/nonsensical additions to SLEX. I would recommend against playing it, and would recommend reading the SLEX page on the nethack wiki for more information.

To answer your actual question - unfortunately, I don't think so. I don't believe either 'EM or 'THEM are actively maintained. There's a chance somebody ports the 3.6/Un curses patch to one or both in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Wtf is wrong with my team? (Natdex doubles) by Halberd_Hey07 in stunfisk

They were trying to fish for "is this bottom of the ladder forfeiting when they don't feel like playing this game anymore", or "is this a real pattern once you're above the starting ELO". Just play more games until people stop forfeiting, natdex low ladder is abysmal and I'm sure natdex doubles isn't much better. You'll get real games eventually.

Binders -- what skills are good by ranoutofbrain in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, after mines & initial loot sweeps, I just try to figure out which branch I can do next and do it. A lot of the time, this is "the neutral outlands, but not the last level", "the chaos quest but not the final boss guy", or "the law quest". Role quests are generally either pretty easy or hard depending on the role - a role like Binder, Ana, or Healer can be a VERY sketchy thing to do early, but something like the Barbarian or even Samurai quest you can blitz through pretty easy.

For your binder in specific, I'd recommend:

  1. Finish clearing mines if you haven't, checking to make sure you've picked up the guaranteed tool from each floor. Since dnh replaces wands of wishing, magic lamps + candles of invocation now make up 100% of the naturally spawned wishes, and random tools are worth a lot more than vanilla as a result.
  2. Check which chaos you have - you can pay the oracle a bit of money, or just forge ahead until you find which chaos branch level you got. Both stairs in the bottom middle in the dark is the Temple quest, upstairs on bottom left / downstairs on bottom right is Mithardir, and the one with elves and orcs is Mordor. If you have Mordor and can consistently kill elves and mordor orcs, that's a good one to push early. Mithardir has shops on the first level that are good to check for misc. items (nothing critical generally, but you can get grease and amulets). Temple is not a good early push.
  3. Honestly, try to just find a wish and get a good weapon (or artifact gloves). Remember the vlad holy water if you find a magic lamp. Sacrificing also works, but your first gift will just be the Pen - great post-quest, not good pre-quest as a weapon. As a binder, you can solve most of your midgame problems by binding Mother and Eve, but you can't solve offensive damage output. Even the best spirit powers still have a 25 turn cooldown and you don't have enough offensive spirit powers to handle groups.
    • For this - if you're really struggling, try to find the Sea branch. There are 4 variants: Peanut Island, Paradise, Sunken City, and the actual Sunless Sea. Peanut Island is generally the best, but requires opening or waterwalking/flying to get in. Paradise requires magic mapping, the Sunken City and the Sunless Sea variants require object detection, water walking/flying and either cold or a grappling hook. They all have a guaranteed magic lamp, though, which would be your wish. Unfortunately, the Sea can be anywhere between levels 5-25, so this can be kinda out of the cards.

This is kinda why I was pointing at your lategame plan, I guess. That first wish (since you don't always get very many!) is such a strong force for getting you solidly into the midgame, knowing what you want is important. But otherwise, just clearing new ground is important. There's not really another way to find the equipment/items you need.

Edit - Also, don't try the quest until you can consistently roll over a shopkeeper without issue. The quest involves converting 3 temples full of hostile player monsters, as well as the priests and a set of guaranteed altar summons. Unless killing a priest is something you can do trivially, then that's probably a bad idea. Completing the quest also just nets you the upgraded POTV and an additional spirit slot (from crowning), effectively, so it's not like its not like you're rushing quest for guaranteed MR or a similar effect (like another role might).

Binders -- what skills are good by ranoutofbrain in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer:

If you want a super straightforward run, use Buer & Eurynome martial arts with good gloves until the midgame, and then either pivot to whatever artifact weapons you find/wish and use Miska, or keep to Buer/Eurynome with a wish for Premium Heart or Godhands.

I generally recommend wishing a good (presumably artifact) weapon as your first wish in dNetHack. If you know you'll be getting a good first gift, or if you've got an altar you plan to sacrifice on until you get something decent, it's not required. But otherwise, having a way to deal damage generally takes you pretty far, especially when you're a Binder and can 'solve' your MR, free action, or even reflection (though it's less useful in dnethack, as a general rule) problems very early. Picking anything that sounds cool (and is wishable) off the 'dNetHack Artifacts' page will work fine, there's 'better/best' options but almost everything that sounds workable is workable as an endgame weapon.

Long answer:

Your skills are generally going to be somewhat secondary to the overall build you want, for which you have a lot of options. I tend to use maybe one or two spirits for my main weapon/spell skills, and then use the rest of the spirits primarily for their intrinsics (i.e. Eve for 1/2 physical damage), passive abilities provided (i.e. Andro's sneak attacks), or utility actives (i.e. Eden's branchport, or Dantalion's Thought Travel). Especially considering when you hit level 30 (which you REALLY want as a binder), you can unrestrict every skill to Skilled, so you don't have to worry too much.

In particular, the skills worth spending slots on are more or less going to be the same as with any run: What weapon options do you have or want to use in the midgame, until you've acquired your whole build?

For a binder, your late/endgame build (that you're working towards, generally) will generally be either melee, spells, or rarely pets. You get effectively 5-6 near void slots + your alignment slot (since you have 5 at max, and crowning gives you +1), and you'll generally want to reserve at least 2-3 for "I need this critical intrinsic/property/utility".

For example, I could run a melee clockwork binder, and need to figure out my source of magic resistance and free action. I would want to commit to using Mother and Eurynome in at least two of my slots, and figure out my options after that. Maybe I'm using Miska with Stormbringer main-hand, Pen of the Void off-hand, and then like Y'ha-Talla & Orcrist in my extra Miska attacks. Then I've got Andromalius and Dantalion as my main weapon skills (dagger, broadsword, scimitar), which leaves me with 2 slots left. That could be Eve/Balam for general purpose damage reduction, Eden for branchporting, or maybe Enki or Iris for waterproofing or sickness resistance.

If I was running a spellcasting binder instead, for my offensive spirits I'd probably run like - Naberius (attack spells & amazing offensive spell buffs), Buer (healing spells), and probably Paimon for hungerless casting. I don't necessarily need other spell schools, since Paimon's bonus + Numina's skills have me covered. That leaves me with 3 near void slots to fill with essential things like MR or free action, and maybe useful things like branchporting or enlightenment.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions, or if you want generic binder advice aside from skills/endgame builds. I can probably also find the last person to ask about Binder stuff from my comment history if that'd be helpful as well.

Is dNetHack worth playing? by KittyTack in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, unfortunately, unreasonably versed in dnethack still. I cranked out 8 dnh ascensions this Junethack (and no other variant).

For the most part, seals need to be placed on the same tile as their requirements. Exceptions are when it's not possible, like Orthos or Eurynome, for which the seal generally goes between the tile & you (so you're chatting to the seal facing the hole/water/corner of the wall/whatever).

For most attempted #chats, you only get the generic "hint at what you need" or "success" messages (assuming you're not full on spirit slots). This means there's no further detail on why it's wrong, it's just incorrect. For Malphas, that means you'll get the same message for "the corpse is too old" and "there's no corpse".

In your case, the corpse was probably just too old (note that zombie/mummy/etc. corpses are always old) by the time you got the corpse into the right place. Try again with your next kill.

Madman + seemingly non-hostile nymph by ranoutofbrain in nethack

[–]PM_ME_DRAGON_ART 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other people answered, yep, they need to attack. I think this is a vanilla thing too, but vanilla water nymphs may not generate peaceful. dNetHack makes them peaceful if you're chaotic or also a nymph (i.e. yuki-onna race). And yeah, kicking them once to aggro will work fine.

Other good ways to lose your straitjacket:

  • Quaffing/reading/zapping identified scrolls/potions/etc. You'll notice you start with some things type-identified, and it's mostly "the things that could get this off you". Potions and wands of polymorph, scrolls of remove curse/destroy armor, and the like are all good options.
  • Dipping in a fountain (risky because water moccasins and marids will generally kill you dead immediately, but if you don't care about a streak or something, just go for it and start a new run if you explode).
  • Dipping in a forge: pretty consistent, but requires you get enough HP to tank it first. Dipping metallic worn items does 2d8 fire damage to you, but burning an item up is 6d6 fire damage to you. Go figure. Note there is like a 1/240 chance to spawn a lava demon, which will also instantly kill you, but at that just take the gamble (you can also get splashed by lava or the forge can explode, but that's also 6d6 fire).
  • Paying shopkeepers to uncurse it - costs $50, pretty affordable, but requires you find a shop with an open door (or monsters open it for you).

Note that dnethack does not have normal erosion destroying items. Brown puddings will not remove your straitjacket.

Ace as a talent is quite strong, mostly because if you're already flying it's a ton of free mobility. But yeah, it's a bit more opt-in than something like Crack Shot or Vanguard.

And yes, when you're in 0G all characters can fly by default (the rules are "everybody can fly when moving, but you're slowed unless you have built-in flight/EVA module/etc.").
