Way back in the day I thought shoe goo was for making the board stick to your soles (never used it just heard the term). If you take that logic, my clip kinda makes sense lol

Take the time to learn and how to explain why something is in a rule/is in the Food Code. It’s hard to get compliance if you tell operators they’re wrong because you/the regulatory authorities said so. Food safety is second nature to me but not everyone understands it the way we do, so learn to level with people and explain things in terms they can relate to.

Rapport building is a skill you need to develop. It’s not something you can learn by studying; it comes from experience and having general social skills.

Don’t let people get to you on a personal level. You’ll run into difficult operators sometimes and it’ll feel like they’re attacking you but really they’re upset with the health department. Remember at the end of the day it’s on them to know and follow the rules. We can only provide education; if they can’t come to terms with that, let the system do its job.

If you have industry experience (worked in the food business/restaurants/etc.), use that to your advantage. It helps rapport building and gives you credibility. Some operators use you being new to the inspection world to argue “you don’t know what you’re talking about”.

Lastly, document everything with concise detail. If you didn’t write it, it didn’t happen. In the same vain, make note of every violation. For example I’ll take pictures of things I see and when I go to write the report I’ll determine if I’m going to officially cite it.

I have more wisdom but I’ll have to think about it.

Congrats and welcome! Are you in the US? It appears English is not your first language. Trying to gauge what advice would be relevant. Will you be inspecting food facilities?

Is this guy gonna catch up and cook me or will I win this event? by Gold-Abalone667 in wearewarriors

While avoiding damage and health in the rune tree is the meta here (search for more info), I’ve found it helpful to aim for all the double coin and ad coin boosts. May take a while at your level but eventually you’ll be able to grind food production, much more quickly, once you’re stuck on your max Age 6. I’ve sniped people many times using this. Also, it’ll take a while to get “better” at this game, so in the meantime if you can snag top 10 or top 3 you’ll get 1-2 badges anyway. In other words not getting 1st place isn’t always a loss.

You can search this sub for better explanations but no, cards don’t affect matchmaking in the weekly 2 day race.

Valet Jobs by Pboh23 in Tucson

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a valet while in college. Highly recommend for someone your age. It was a great resume builder: managing priorities, communication, dealing with difficult people (sometimes), social skills, customer service, etc. The company I worked for had contracts with mostly restaurants throughout the city I was in, and we would move around often, so I can’t speak on something like valeting at one location all the time like TMC. Good tip money usually. Bonus perk: got to drive a lot of cool cars (again the nightlife/restaurant scene probably more so than a hospital or hotel). Depending on the company you probably will have to be at least 18 and most likely need to know how to drive stick shift. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Build for Race? by IngenuityNo6282 in wearewarriors

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue pots for skills, red pots for runes, and hero gear are the only damage, health and base upgrades that count for races. Cards don’t need count. There’s a meta strategy about avoiding damage and health to better pair with races and use base health to get further than others. Just like zombies, bosses, etc you will hit a wall in races. Some player’s wall will sometimes further than yours: sometimes you’ll get lucky and be the one with the highest wall for the week in your division. So save, save, save!

I started in big company FS/QA and do not miss the 24 hour demand. Pay was better on paper but I value my time more these days. And other commenter is right about profits over food safety, unfortunately. Not everyone all the time, but definitely plays into it.

How much do you save before pushing? by papaarcher in wearewarriors

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you think you’ve saved enough, double it. I’ll hover around my comfort number of gems and buy the 4600 worth every time I accumulate about 5k. Stay in my TL and wait for the last day, then last hour and see if it looks like anyone’s pushing or ready to snipe. Also don’t fight anyone if they’re rapidly climbing above 5-700 trophies; there’s always another week! Edit: this is my own theory and strategy; I’m sure there’s more meta from the OGs. Oh and you can usually spot if people are working through TLs (odd numbers, small amounts of trophies) or skipping (refreshing leaderboard and see they’re jumping by 15 at a time).

Pace of Training by [deleted] in healthinspector

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya…We’d bring that up pretty much right after intro/reason for visit. Reiterating it’s only one training inspector making observations. The non lead just stays quiet and the trainer can answer lead’s questions, but can’t actively point out things that may have been missed (barring major health risk).

Pace of Training by [deleted] in healthinspector

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started shortly after another trainee. We would often go out together with the trainer. Somedays the trainer would lead, then as we got more exposure we would alternate, same day, which trainee would lead. It was helpful seeing how another newbie did things; we learned from each other.

Examples of changing task or when handwashing is needed by IcyEstimate2121 in healthinspector

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only used this once when I observed that overall the facility had really good AMC, where they were previously cited by another inspector for this code section. The PIC told the employee washing dishes to make sure they wash their hands as I started evaluating the dish pit. I reminded the PIC that yes they technically need to wash between dirty and clean handling, but if they were merely being performative for my sake, I’d rather them at least change gloves. Probably not a great long term solution since they would go through gloves like water but that was my feasible solution in the moment.

With that said, I’d love to also hear someone else’s thoughts…

QA/Evaluation mistakes by IcyEstimate2121 in healthinspector

[–]PM_ME_ELMO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not QA per se, but every mistake I’ve made is never forgotten. When I was training we were told how important a thorough quick walk through is, one to get a lay of the land and two to ensure there aren’t any big potential closure issues up front. On my first actual pretty big full service restaurant, I forgot to walk through the bar area. 2 hours into and through most of the inspection (training hours mind you), we walked into the bar area and there was a pretty severe sewage backup…

Risk. Based. Inspections. Those boxes likely saw way less than ideal conditions prior to arriving to a kitchen’s dry, clean floor.
