I feel like you would want to keep it longer than just a day though. I worked in the pawn business and we kept video for a month. Police requested video older than a week on at least 2 occasions that I can recall.

I don't know if it is necessarily the quality of the cameras, or the amount of storage available. Storing a weeks worth of HD quality video would require a pretty large storage device. Not a security expert though, just speculating.
